FORM CLASSES OR CONTENT WORDS

•These words can be inflected.•They have special forms—signals or characteristics of position and form, such as endings and the like which mark them off one from another.

FORM CLASSES OR CONTENT WORDS

•They are also called content words because they are used for things, actions, or qualities.

•These are NOUNS,

ADJECTIVES, and

ADVERBS.

FUNCTION OR STRUCTURE WORDS

•These are words whose forms or spellings do not change.•They have no meaning by themselves but they are used in utterances to signal grammatical relationship.

FUNCTION OR STRUCTURE WORDS

•These words are also called structure words because they tie up the four main form classes to give pattern or structure to the English language.
