Review 2013﹣2014
is the Jardine Matheson Group’s philanthropic initiative
established to make a difference in the area of mental
health. Led by the Jardine Ambassadors, the MINDSET
programme aims to raise awareness and understanding
of mental health issues and to change attitudes, while at
the same time providing practical support for charitable
initiatives in the sector.
1
The Jardine Matheson Group in Hong Kong and mainland
China focuses its philanthropic activities on the under-
resourced area of mental health and where the Group
feels it can make a lasting difference. MINDSET is
a registered charity in Hong Kong established by the
Group in 2002 to spearhead the initiative.
In Singapore, the Group also set up a sister organization,
MINDSET Care Limited, in 2011 to support the mental
health sector in the city-state.
MINDSET has received strong support from Group
companies, including Dairy Farm, Hongkong Land,
Jardine Motors, various companies within Jardine Pacific,
JLT and Mandarin Oriental.
Driven by the Jardine Ambassadors, young volunteer
executives across the Group, MINDSET aims to
change people’s attitudes by raising awareness
and understanding of mental health issues, and to
provide direct assistance for individuals, families and
organizations in need of help.
MINDSET supports non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) within the mental health sector in the form of
in-kind donations, volunteer services, work experience
and cash donations, and works alongside government
agencies.
MINDSET’s initiatives are focused on (1) Education and
Prevention; (2) Reintegration; (3) Financial Support;
and (4) Community Awareness. Details are outlined in
the following progress reports covering the period from
1st July 2013 to 30th June 2014.
The Jardine Ambassadors are the key drivers for MINDSET.
MINDSET has continued its mission to make a difference
in the area of mental health. During the past year we
launched the first train-to-work project for service users
who are recovering from mental illnesses, and in May the
second cohort of Peer Support Workers graduated from the
training programme ready to help others who are facing
similar challenges in their illness. One of the new Peer
Support Workers told me that, in addition to being able to
help the others in group therapy sessions, she also gained
confidence in being the group leader and was able to
establish a close bonding with other service users. I am very
pleased to see that the programme is starting to bear fruit.
In addition to the Peer Support Workers project, we are
exploring an exciting new recovery service through
MINDSET. We are funding an initiative led by four NGOs
to engage service users in creative art that is designed to
foster mental wellness and positive psychology. These
art activities help service users express their feelings,
enhance their social skills and gain recognition and self-
esteem through exhibiting their works. I look forward to
seeing their works in future.
Our Group companies continue to provide invaluable
support to MINDSET, not only in organizing activities for
service users such as mini-MINDSET days, but also
making use of their expertise in their own business.
Chairman’s Message
A good example is IKEA, which through MINDSET has been
heavily involved in renovating the Child and Adolescent
Psychiatric Ward in Kwai Chung Hospital. IKEA’s design
team has created a positive and cheerful design, while
furnishing the ward with vibrant IKEA products. It is hoped
that the complete makeover will enhance the quality of the
experience of the children and adolescents attending the
ward, and lead to shorter stays.
MINDSET’s achievements in the past year are recorded
in this report, and I hope you will read about them with
interest. We owe our thanks to the hard working Jardine
Ambassadors, who are fully dedicated to driving the
MINDSET events. I would also like to thank the MINDSET
Coordinators from across our Group companies, our
Advisers and Steering Committee members for their advice
and support, and also our associates in the NGOs and
government agencies.

DonationsFourty-three percent of MINDSET’s HK$7.17 million
cash donations in 2013/14 went to direct services
for adults suffering or having recovered from mental
illnesses. Training workshops, vocational assessment
and counseling, and professional care services were
provided to help individuals who have recovered from
a mental illness to reintegrate into society.
Eighteen percent of the funding went to services that
supported children and teenagers who were in need,
while approximately 4% of the funding was allocated
to supporting the carers who are in need of emotional
support when dealing with the pressure of taking
care of family members who suffer from a mental
illness. They benefited through experience sharing
and knowledge obtained in mutual help groups and
training sessions organized by the NGOs supported by
MINDSET.
Over 35% of MINDSET’s funding in the year of 2013/14
was allocated to public education among young
people. Through the Health in Mind programme,
MINDSET promotes mental wellness and understanding
by empowering adolescents with knowledge and
establishing positive attitudes towards mental health
issues.

Progress Report
Education & Prevention
Education is a key focus of the MINDSET programme.
A number of activities were held to raise awareness
of mental health among the younger generation of
Hong Kong.
Health in Mind ProgrammeThe Health in Mind Programme, organized and funded
by MINDSET and in collaboration with Hong Kong’s
Hospital Authority since 2002, promotes positive
attitudes towards mental health among the youth.
With Jardine Ambassadors leading the efforts, the
programme aims to empower secondary school
students as advocates to promote mental health
to fellow students, their families and the public at
large through interactive activities and experiential
personal development training.
A series of activities and themed workshops were
held during the school year of 2013/14 in conjunction
with Kwai Chung Hospital. These activities covered
mental health related topics such as removing the
stigma on mental illness, self-image and eating
disorders, emotions management, positive psychology
and addiction. The students also participated
in volunteering services through activities with
individuals who suffer from a mental illness. Through
discussions with Jardine Ambassadors, the students
were able to deepen their understanding of mental
health issues.
5
The programme has been successful thanks to the
guidance from the healthcare professionals from the
Hospital Authority, the clinical psychologist from
MINDSET, and teachers of the participating schools.
“Through the Health in Mind programme, we have
not only learnt a lot about mental illness, but have also
learnt to accept and respect others in society. If we
are willing to give a helping hand to those who are
recovering from mental illnesses, it may help them go
through the recovery path with the support that they
need,” said Bianca Chan, a student of Belilios Public
School.
City OrienteeringOver 240 participants, including student advocates
from ten Health in Mind schools, service users from
Caritas Hong Kong, Castle Peak Hospital, Kwai Chung
Hospital, Kwai Chung Integrated Rehabilitation Centre
of Po Leung Kuk, the Mental Health Association of
Hong Kong, New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Association and Jardine Ambassadors, joined the
activity in February 2014.
Participants were divided into groups of four to six
persons and accompanied by Jardine Ambassadors
with the objective of completing designated tasks in
various checkpoints with a limited budget, including
drawing a painting at an art centre, locating landmarks
and historical footprints in various districts and
tourist spots. The event provided opportunities for
the students and service users to interact with each
other, and created an environment which helped service
users cope with the practical needs of daily life through
route planning, money management, problem solving
and decision making.
“The service users and the students were all very
excited throughout the adventure – especially when
they saw an exceptionally large crab at the seafood
market. Everyone behaved like kids and talked and
laughed the same way as we would do with friends.
I am glad to have made so many friends through this
event,” said Jardine Ambassador Kenneth Wong of
Zung Fu.
Cultivating Positive Attitudes towards Mental HealthThe Health in Mind programme supported more than
420 student advocates from 29 secondary schools in
Hong Kong in the school year of 2013/14. Over 120
in-school activities, volunteer services, interactive
workshops and seminars were organized during the
school year, benefiting over 12,000 students, parents,
teachers and people suffering or recovering from
mental illness.
Since the launch of the Health in Mind programme
in 2002, over 100,000 students, their teachers and
parents from 69 secondary schools have benefited
from the programme. By playing an active role in the
programme, student advocates have shown positive
changes in their attitude, behaviour and mental
wellbeing.
Each year, outstanding students selected from the
programme are offered short-term job placements
within Jardines’ business units to gain work experience.
Further details of the programme are available on
Health in Mind’s dedicated website:

Reintegration
Reintegrating individuals who have recovered from a
mental illness into the community helps improve their
quality of life. In light of this, MINDSET undertakes job
training programmes within Jardine Matheson Group
companies, as well as engages in reintegration activities
alongside the services of mental health hospitals and
NGOs.
Job Training ProgrammeUnder the job training programme, Group companies
have offered service users training opportunities or
contract term employment ranging from a few weeks to
one year. The Jardine Ambassadors have worked with
Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, Caritas Hong Kong,
Castle Peak Hospital, Christian Family Service Centre,
Fu Hong Society, Kwai Chung Hospital, the Mental
Health Association of Hong Kong, New Life Psychiatric
Rehabilitation Association, Phoenix Clubhouse,
Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong and the Society of
Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention since the launch of
the programme in 2005. The programme has benefited
a total of 1,033 individuals since inception.
During the 2013/14 year, 13 Group companies offered
recovered individuals 32 training positions ranging
from one to nine months designed to prepare them
to re-enter the job market. Four group placements on
mass mailing were also made available. A total of 63
individuals participated in the programme, and about
half of them were able to find jobs in the market after
the placement in Jardines.
Ms Lau, who has recovered from a mental illness, was
on the job training programme, “I am grateful to have
been given a job training opportunity which enables me
to learn office skills so as to pave the way for getting
7
back to work. The acceptance, respect and support from
my supervisor and colleagues have helped me rebuild
self-confidence as well as create a positive energy in me
to find a job in the open market.”
To encourage the hiring of more people who have
recovered from a mental illness throughout the Group,
MINDSET organized two half-day workshops for Jardines
employees imparting knowledge on how to work with
them. Clinical psychologists, occupational therapists and
social work professionals were invited to discuss their
experience in helping recovered individuals reintegrate
into society.
MINDSET Academy, a new programme offering
structured training workshops in both social and work
skills for recovered individuals, was launched in January
2014. Five themed workshops on interview skills,
mock interview exercise, grooming, computer skills
and nutrition were organized, benefiting 53 recovered
individuals.
Reintegration ActivitiesThe Jardine Ambassadors worked with two specialist
hospitals and other mental health organizations to hold
12 reintegration activities over the past year, benefiting
1,000 people. The beneficiaries came from a number
of NGOs, including Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, the
Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, Caritas
Hostel – Fanling, Caritas Wellness Link – Tsuen Wan,
Castle Peak Hospital, Kwai Chung Hospital, the Mental

Work and PlayThe Jardine Ambassadors organized a wide range of
activities to help enhance the work, social and self-
care skills of those who suffer or have recovered from
a mental illness, in collaboration with the partnering
NGOs and hospitals. A pizza making and table manners
workshop was organized to teach service users how
to make pizzas and to demonstrate western dining
etiquette.
In addition, the Jardine Ambassadors visited service
users who lived alone during the Chinese New Year.
The first ever MINDSET Singing Contest was held in
May 2014. The competition provided an opportunity
for service users to show off their singing skills. Other
service users also participated in the event by being
the cheering teams. “Our service users greatly enjoyed
the singing contest. I am immensely proud of their
stellar performances,” said Francez Leung, a social
worker of Phoenix Clubhouse.
Caritas Hong Kong won the best cheering team in the MINDSET Singing Contest.

Financial Support
In 2013/14, MINDSET funded a number of projects that
benefited individuals who suffer from a mental illness,
and their carers and families.
MINDSET PlaceMINDSET Place is a long stay care home with a high
standard of professional care services for people
recovering from chronic mental illnesses. New Life
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association has been
appointed by MINDSET to operate MINDSET Place.
The home is fully occupied providing residential
care services for 38 service users. As of May 2014,
nine residents were engaged in open employment,
eight took up cleansing work training in New Life’s
supported employment service, 13 were attending
sheltered workshops, and the remainder were
attending cleansing, horticultural and handicraft
training at MINDSET Place.
During the past 12 months, the residents joined
a range of recreational programmes provided by
MINDSET Place including sightseeing tours, a camping
activity and a voluntary service programme, as well as
participating in festive and birthday celebrations.
Peer Support Workers Project MINDSET has funded in a three-year pilot project
starting in August 2012 in Hong Kong, which aims to
train people who have recovered from a mental illness
to help others who are undergoing similar challenges.
The ‘MINDSET Peer Support Workers Project’ is run
by four agencies – Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service,
Caritas Hong Kong, the Mental Health Association of
Hong Kong, and New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation
Association.
Following the graduation of the first batch of trainees in
April 2013, 16 out of 18 graduates have been employed
as Peer Support Workers in the four agencies since
June 2013. They provide support to service users
through phone contacts and home visits, and share
their own recovery experience with them.
11
The second batch of trainees have been allocated to
the placement units under the four agencies, including
the integrated community centres for mental wellness,
halfway houses, sheltered workshops and long stay care
homes.
Ms Tang, one of the graduates, said that the course has
provided her an opportunity for self-discovery. She has
become more aware of her strengths and has made
remarkable personal development. She is now more
ready to face new challenges.
Support to The Community Chest of Hong KongDairy Farm, Gammon Construction, Hongkong Land,
Jardine Engineering Corporation, Jardine Matheson
Limited and Zung Fu continued their support to the
Community Chest by making cash donations for mental
health related projects. Funds were allocated to Christian
Oi Hip Fellowship, Regeneration Society, Family Welfare
Society and St. James’ Settlement. Staff from various
Group companies also supported the Community Chest’s
Dress Special Day, Love Teeth Day and Skip Lunch Day.
Expanded School Mental Health Network in SichuanMINDSET supported the ‘Expanded School Mental
Health Network’ organized by the Hong Kong Polytechnic
University to provide integrated service to primary
school students in Sichuan. With the success of the work
accomplished in its first two phases in the schools, the
programme continues to promote the community mental
health of the villagers in Yingxiu as they cope with the
makeshift living environment and face uncertain and
adverse weather conditions. The social workers are
also planning for programmes that help families deal
with their daily hardships as the villagers settle into the
newly built area.
MINDSET Art ProjectMINDSET’s new initiative, MINDSET Art Project will
be launched in July 2014. The programme supports
four Hong Kong NGOs to engage persons recovering
from mental illness in art programmes to foster mental
wellness and positive psychology.
The four organizations are Baptist Oi Kwan Social
Service, Caritas Hong Kong, Castle Peak Hospital and
New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association. Service
users will participate in different forms of art including
sand animation, photography, playback theatre and
drama, music bands and singing.
Over 1,200 service users and 300 carers are expected to
benefit from the 1,300 sessions of art activities during
the three-year period of the project.
Jardine Ambassadors sing the Christmas Carols during a visit to MINDSET Place.
With MINDSET’s financial support and IKEA’s positive and creative design, Kwai Chung Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatric ward offers a homely and comfortable environment for the patients.
Kwai Chung Hospital ProjectThrough MINDSET, IKEA has provided support to Kwai
Chung Hospital by offering creative designs and products
for the refurbishment of the Child and Adolescent
Psychiatric Ward. The works were completed in June
2014. The ward provides a homely and comfortable
environment for children and adolescents who require
treatment there.
Each year, Jardine Ambassadors undertake a range
of initiatives to solicit community support and raise
funds for mental health related causes. Funding
support is also received from Group companies.
Walk Up Jardine HouseThe biggest fundraiser for the year for MINDSET, the
annual Walk Up Jardine House is organized by the
Jardine Ambassadors. The 2014 event raised a record
HK$3.8 million for MINDSET. Over 500 staff from
Group business units, business associates, families
and friends took part in the event. Participants
ran – and some walked – up 49 floors to reach the
Penthouse at the top of Jardine House.
CENTRAL Rat RaceThe annual CENTRAL Rat Race, run by Group company
Hongkong Land, is another signature event that
raises funds for MINDSET. Held in Hong Kong’s
principal business area, Central, over 460 participants
completed the course of the eighth CENTRAL Rat
Race, raising a record HK$3 million in October 2013.
To date, the CENTRAL Rat Race has raised a total of
HK$18 million for MINDSET.
“It’s a delight and an honour for MINDSET to be the
beneficiary of this great event once again,” said
Governor of MINDSET and Jardine Matheson Group
Deputy Managing Director Adam Keswick. “To see the
community have fun and come together in support of
something as important as mental health every year is
truly inspirational. The CENTRAL Rat Race makes a real
difference to people’s lives.”
Sania Yau, Chief Executive of the New Life Psychiatric
Rehabilitation Association said, “MINDSET has been
supporting our services for many years. The CENTRAL
Rat Race gives our service users an opportunity to be
involved in a big community event. It’s also great to see
so many big corporations making a concerted effort for
the field of mental health, which sets a great example.”
MINDSET Fun Day and Mini-MINDSET DaysOver 200 participants including 100 staff from across
the Jardine Matheson Group and 100 service users from
six NGOs came together for the annual MINDSET Fun
Day, which was organized by the Jardine Ambassadors
at Wu Kai Sha Youth Village with the objective of
promoting social inclusion and raising awareness on

interaction in the games, participants came to know
each other and had a day of fun together.
MINDSET has been well supported by the Group
companies of Jardine Matheson. In the year of 2013/14,
nine Group companies organized their own ‘Mini-
MINDSET Days’, where Jardine Ambassadors and
staff of individual Group companies partnered with
different NGOs to hold an assortment of one-day
programmes for the recovered service users.
A visit to a historical building, King Yin Lei, was
organized by Jardine Ambassadors from Hactl and
Hongkong Land for service users from Phoenix
Clubhouse, whereas the joint team from Jardine
Matheson and Zung Fu had a tour to Yuen Long with
service users from MINDSET Club and Castle Peak
Hospital. In an activity for the Baptist Oi Kwan Social
Service, service users joined the Jardine Ambassadors
from Jardine OneSolution for a cupcake making
workshop.
Noonday GunIndividuals or organizations who donate a specified
sum to MINDSET may fire the Jardines Noonday Gun, a
tradition that dates back to the very early days of
Hong Kong.
Contributions from Group CompaniesIn addition to contributions made through Walk Up
