Since more than 90 years basic bricks made by either Didier, Veitscher or Radex have been conquering the world’s cement kilns. Brands like ANKRAL, BASAL, RUBINAL, REXAL and RADEX have significantly contributed to improving the kiln’s lining lives and to meeting the demands of consistantly changing processes. Today RHI is continuing this success story with a number of well intro-duced as well as brand new ANKRAL brick types, featuring alternative spinels like hercynite and galaxite, thus streamlining the basic product range under the brand name ANKRAL®.
Not only the basic section of modern rotary kilns has to withstand the challenges of constantly changing operational parameters – especially considering the increased use of alternative fuels. Especially in this respect also the nonbasic lining plays an important role for a reliable kiln operation. RHI has developed a series new and more resistant nonbasic linings to withstand the new challenges of alternative fuel burning – especially as far as attacks of alkalis sulphur and chlorine ere concerned. Special impregnated alumina bricks („IS“-technology) as well as silicon carbide and superduty alumina bricks complement the basic product range under the well known RESISTAL® and MAXIAL® brands.

RefRoiDisseuRToday‘s high efficiency cooling systems demand premium grade refractories. A combination of complex geometries and hazardous conditions, such as intensive abrasion, hot gases and chemical attack require tailor-made solutions from the refractory industry. RHI’s wide range of alumina products – starting from shaped products of the RESISTAL, MAXIAL and LEGRAL grades and continuing with our high-grade alumina castables COMPRIT, DIDURIT and LEGRIT meet those challenges and have been serving in numerous cement plants all over the globe.
Besides these well-known castables, RHI offers also a broad range of concretes for application by gunning techniques. Shotcrete mixes are also available apart from the conventional gunning application (brand names with the appendix G). The concretes having the brand name COMPAC SHOT are characterized by excellent physical properties, comparable to cast concretes enabling quick installation progress with low material loss. With the Dense Gunning Technique it is now also possible to apply low-cement castables (brand names with appendix DG) with conventional gunning equipment keeping investment costs for gunning techniques low and guaranteeing the outstanding properties of low-cement castables. Free-flowing castables (DIDOFLO) are also available for special applications.
Auxiliary materials, such as metallic and ceramic anchoring systems and a variety of calcium silicate boards and fiber products, complement RHI’s wide product range.

To control the severe conditions encountered in modern cement kilns special non-basic products were developed and successfully introduced in the market by RHI.
MAXIAL 334IS, RESISTAL B50ZIS, RESISTAL SK60CIS, RESISTAL B75ZIS and RESISTAL M45SICIS
The resistance of fireclay and alumina bricks to volatile constituents in the kiln atmosphere (alkalis, chlorine and sulfur) can be increased significantly by a sophisticated impregnating treatment without impairing the thermo-mechanical properties of the base material.
The impregnation liquid containing nano-sized oxide particles of high refractori-ness and high alkali resistance fills the pores and protects the refractory grains. It is also lowering the apparent porosity which inhibits infiltration of volatile oxides.
This advanced technology gives you also two further benefits: coating repellence and abrasion resistance.
Excessive coating ring formation, especially in safety and preheating zones and mostly coming from a locally concentrated surplus of sulfur (formation of spurrites) obstruct the material flow. Coating repellent IS-bricks cover these areas and keep the surface coating free.
The impregnation leads to higher cold crushing strength and therefore to higher abrasion resistance which is of importance in kiln inlets and coolers.
IS-bricks show an extraordinary long service life timeeven in critical kilns due to the special impregnation. They can be used wherever an increased load by alkaline salts, abrasion and excessive coating effects the non-basic lining.

RHI is offering to you a wide range of SiC containing products with application-oriented features.
Adding SiC to alumina products improves notable the alkali and also abrasion resistance. The reason behind is that SiC starts being oxidized at high temperatures and converted into a viscose silicate glass. This glassy coating covers the surface of the grains and prevents from formation of new volume expanding compounds (alkali spalling). SiC products are also a solution for abnormal coating and clogging formations.
Apart from using fireclay and alumina bricks with SiC with high resistance against alkali spalling and abrasion, RHI can support the approprate castable solution and gunning mixes on SiC basis for critical areas.

In the past, Magnesia-Alumina-Spinel bricks were considered as state of the art for chrome-free kiln linings in the cement industry. Available standard MA-spinel bricks differ mainly in the type of magnesia and in the amount and type of their alumina carrier (sintered and fused MA-spinel, calc. alumina, white fused alumina, etc.).
Under severe conditions of modern cement kilns, the high amount of alumina in MA-spinel bricks, required for flexibility, has to be considered as a disadvantage. Due to the formation of low melting calcium-aluminates the corrosion resistance and hot erosion strength are reduced.
Because of this fact RHI´s research work has been focused on reducing the alumina content to a minimum with a simultaneous improvement of the fracture mechanical behaviour.
From all possible members of the spinel groups, hercynite and galaxite, were found to be the most efficient. Due to the very low amount of alumina required, the sensitivity to corrosion by clinker melt and alkali salts is significantly reduced. A further property is the low permeability that reduces the tendency to infiltration.
Despite the reduced alumina content, the tensile strength of magnesia-hercynite and magnesia-galaxite bricks is kept at a much higher level compared to con-ventional top grade MA-spinel bricks even at high temperatures (1100 °C).

anKRaL Ze – implementation of a new technology
ANKRAL ZE was developed in 1996 and is the first cement rotary kiln brick based on hercynite - an active spinel. Since then ANKAL ZE has become the standard wear lining for the burning zones in many kilns. Due to its low thermal conductivity, excellent flexibility and outstanding ability to form a very stable and protective coating, ANKRAL ZE has developed into one of the big sellers for RHI. This brick grade is highly appreciated by customers worldwide due to its superb price/performance ratio.
anKRaL Z1 – a targeted development
Based on the development of our patented “Hercynite-Technology” it was possible to develop a product with a unique raw material concept and outstanding properties. ANKRAL Z1 provides a substantially improved resistance to alkali salt attack and clinker infiltration combined with high structural flexibility. The incomparable coating forming tendency of ANKRAL Z1 is a further essential feature. The effect of this protective mechanism on service life and kiln shell temperature cannot be achieved with conventional MA-spinel bricks.
anKRaL Z2 – the all-rounder
The successful implementation of the patented hercynite technology guarantees high reliability and a wide range of application. Therefore, the next consequent step was to develop this new brick type to close the gap between ANKRAL ZE and ANKRAL Z1.
The use of high-quality natural sintered magnesia gives this brick a high chemical resistance. The low Al2O3 content limits the formation of liquid phases and corrosion in case of clinker melt infiltration. As excellent flexibilizing additive serves hercynite spinel which also contributes to stabilize the formation of coating. Accordingly ANKRAL Z2 can be recommended for the entire basic zone in the rotary kiln.
