It was an unusually warm daydown at South Bank, beforethe official summer and a fewof us decided to hit up someother spots to skate, one ofthe people there that day wasChris Morgan. My shrapnellined pockets dictated how Iwould be travelling; on theTube; to reach thedestination, sometimes I feellike a kid and surely myyouthful appearance wasenough... I only knew ahandful of the skaters atWaterloo station and I startedspeaking to one of them whowas about the same oldschool age as myself, Chris,a quite spoken friendly guy.Little did I know then, at thatchance meeting that heowned a skateboardcompany called ScienceSkateboards and that a fewweeks later I would beworking with him.

The next time I saw Chriswas down at South Bankselling Science decks out ofhis backpack. I spoke to himabout the company andoffered my services as awriter, knowing in the back ofmy mind there are a hell of alot of skateboarders that dographic design, photographyand work in other creativeforms dealing with images, but not that many that write, Iwas right. After a few chilledout meetings, hanging out infree places like coffee shopsand parks discussingScience, a connection wasformed and writing for thewebsite began.

Ten years ago Chris startedselling t-shirts emblazonedwith Science designs but thename Science which comesfrom the Latin word scientiawhich means knowledge, goback even further for Chris,“It was my science class inschool, my chemistry teachertold me about the meaning ofthe word and it always stuckwith me, it made animpression, i thought it wascool.” Chris worked as headdesigner for Eclectic Breaksfor four years giving a 100%to it and attempting to givethe same to Science at the

same time. He decided hewanted to be his own bossand left to focus solely onScience. An aspect of thecompany that seperates itfrom being just anotherskateboard company is thatthere is a design consultancyside to it, Chris has alreadyused his skills in creatingdesign work for amongstothers Danny Wainwright’sUK skate shop 50:50 andrevered graffiti collective‘They Made Me Do It’.

Preferring ‘skateboardgraphics over graphics onskateboards’, Chris harksback to a time when,“Skateboard graphics likerecord sleeves of the lastgeneration were crafted, unlike today where a largeamount of skateboards arelike cd’s and have a shortshelf life with the graphicsproduced as a means to anend!” This nostalgic notionhas prompted him tocollaborate with other artistswho have some connectionto skateboarding and believein the quality over quantityview in creating works of arton board graphics andclothing for Science. Theartists doing the collaborationrange from and fit the criteriaas, “Artists whose work I aminto to and giving people withtalent a break, but it alldepends on how real theperson and their design is,I’ve not chosen anyone whois a follower!” Thecollaboration is as follows:the illustrators Stevie Gee,

Jethro Haynes, Mr Gauky and Jon Burgerman anddesign company ‘I Love Dust’. Also included isthe highly accomplished French artist Koadznwho was one of the 100 artists participating inTag The System art event that took place inParis this year, also involved is the designcompany Hype Type who are responsible forthe design and publication of the book onskateboard art by the gifted skateboarder andartist, Andy Howell.

From the visual side of Science is Rich andHenry from Concrete Poets - the aptly namedskateboard collective creating skateboardvideos with a lot of time and effort poured intothem - Rich is the photographer and Henry isdoing the filming and editing for the Scienceskateboard video along with additional filmers, the video is now in production.

The skateboard team consists of two skatersfrom Sheffield who are on flow, Fran Sprengerat 15 years old the youngest on the team, and16 year old Mike Burns. From London the two17 year olds are Dan Tomlinson, and brandnew to the team, Scott Howes. Also hailingfrom London is 22 years old South African ex-pat, Shaun Witherup who used to be sponsoredby Expedition one and Island Style shoes inSouth Africa and in his time in Liverpool he wassponsored by Lost Art skate shop and Insane Boards. Atpresent he is being helped out by DVS shoes.

It was a coincidence that introduced me into the world ofScience and to analyse a realisation that I have known forsome time, that in the hearts and minds of most, if not allskateboarders next to, below or even above the expressionthat skateboardeing portrays is a desire to communicate inother forms of creativity. As an individual whose love forskateboarding and art, Chris Morgan and all those involved, share this vision and are very aware of how these twomediums have impact seperately or can be blended to formthe essence that is Science.
