Called by the Father to work in His Vineyard:

A Great Privilege

Though we can never fully grasp the infinite perfection of God and His ways, a basic knowledge of Scripture reveals that God’s logic often differs from worldly logic.

Our first reading, from Isaiah, reminds us that God often thinks bigger than we do. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” As His disciples we must strive as best we can to think as God does, using our time with eternity in mind.

In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus offers us a glimpse of the “Godly logic” of the Father through the parable of a landowner hiring workers for his vineyard. Some workers are called early in the day, others not until very late. Yet, the landowner pays them all a full day’s wage. This angered the laborers who had worked longest…they were relying on human logic and human calculations. They were not thinking as God does.

This can happen to us as well. We may grumble and complain… become indignant with envy and jealousy…sometimes out loud…sometimes we keep it quiet…our emotional responses and human logic can eat away at us when we compare ourselves and our lives to others. This becomes more challenging if we feel or sense that not all disciples are contributing as much as we are to the parish, the neighborhood, within our family… It just doesn’t seem fair! At those moments, we need to think bigger! Just like God. Much like those same laborers in the parable, we must not envy God’s generosity. We are not being cheated…quite the contrary! We are blessed by God in ways often difficult to understand, or even appreciate. We must remember that it is a great privilege to have been called by the Father to work in His vineyard. Living this discipleship way of life brings us meaning, depth and purpose.

Dare to think outside of the “box” of human logic… Embrace GOD’s logic…Give and LIVE in gratitude

for this GIFT of the Father’s CALL!

¡Simplemente no parece justo!

Notice of 2nd Collection (Weekend of September 19-20, 2020): Holy Land Collection

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We turn our attention to the Holy Land and its place in salvation history. Keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land and serving the people there is an urgent goal of the Church. This is the place of the “first” church, where Jesus lived and taught. There is a small, vibrant Christian community in the Holy Land, in Israel and Palestine today. These Christians are the descendants of the first Christians who witnessed the Passion of Christ; yet many of these people are leaving the Holy Land due to economic, social and religious hardship. They need our help to survive and to help care for the holy places that mark the life of Jesus. Under normal circumstances, this collection is taken on Good Friday, but due to the current pandemic, we will be collecting on September 19 & 20, 2020. With the funds from the Holy Land Collection, the Franciscan Friars, who have been in the Holy Land since 1209, not only provide presence, care and service to the people who are living in the Holy Land but also maintain the holy shrines that are so significant in the history of our Christian Faith. Your generosity and prayers enable Christianity to remain and thrive in the Holy Land.

Sincerely Yours in Christ
