Joseph George Heckenast, 

ʺJim McGrawʺ,  passed away 

May 27, 2016 in Richmond, BC. 

Jim McGraw was the 

newsletter editor for the 

Vancouver Historical Society 

for many years. Published in 

Vancouver Sun and/or The 

Province on June 2, 2016. 

Rick Hart, known as ʺMr. 

Fleetwoodʺ to many, passed 

away July 2, 2016 at the age of 

62 after a short battle with 

brain cancer. Hart pushed hard 

for a statue of pioneer Arthur 

Thomas Fleetwood outside the 

Fleetwood Community Centre 

and the nearby Francis Park, 

named after Edith Francis who 

was Arthur’s sister. 

Published in the Surrey Now. 

John Willison Green, passed 

away May 28, 2016 in 

Chilliwack, at age 89. Green 

was a researcher, journalist and 

community leader of the 

Agassiz‐Harrison area, whose 

efforts helped to preserve the 

Kilby General Store at Harrison 

Mills as a dedicated heritage 

site. John was also known as a 

bestselling author on the topic 

of the Sasquatch. Published in 

Vancouver Sun and/or The 

Province from June 4 to June 5,

Advocacy Working Group Update Advocacy Group Welcomes Glennis Zilm 

The BCHF Advocacy Working Group is very pleased to 

welcome Glennis Zilm as a member. Glennis Zilm 

merged a nursing background with a long career as a 

professional journalist, freelance writer and broadcaster, 

and teacher about writing.  Now semi‐retired, she 

continues to research and write about nursing history. 

She is a member of  both the Surrey Historical Society 

and BC History of Nursing Society.  She has initiated 

and fostered many historical projects, and she brings her experience in 

these to our Group. 

The BCHF Advocacy Working Group, Sandra Martins, M. Diane Rogers, 

Brenda Smith, and Glennis Zilm, met in June and reviewed 2016 

Conference discussions and the resolution presented at the Federationʹs 

AGM concerning increases in the Royal BC Museumʹs reproduction fees. 

We encourage members to share with us any action they take on this issue. 

Thank you to all who participated in the Advocacy session.  

We are now working on an Advocacy toolkit which will be available to 

members and others.  

Information on advocacy issues can be sent to the Advocacy Group via the 

BCHF website: www.bchistory.ca/about‐the‐bchf/committees/advocacy/.
