Sex in horror films is definitely prominent, and for a distinct reason: the male presence of the horror fans. The merging of horror with sexuality is something that is irresistable to some.

INTRODUCTION

Revelation is a magazine dedicated to the reintroduction of the horror film genre. The horror film began in the early 20th century, and since then, it has transformed from scaring and shocking people to blood, gore, and sexuality.

A REINVENTION

This magazine is intended to appeal not only to the general horror film audience (males ranging from ages 15 to 35), but to also cater to women by beautifying horror as something more than just blood and gore.

WOMEN IN HORROR

Women in horror films have generally been portrayed as sophisticated, beautiful, and voluptuous but lacking a sense of intelligence. In this way, many women can be turned off to horror films because they see their gender as inferior or weak.

What is America’s obsession with horror films? Why do we want to sit in the dark and watch our worst nightmares play out on the screen? Why are these two things so often mixed together?

Horror cannot seem to exist without blatant or underlying themes of sexuality and many times that message is that sex is something to be afraid of. Maybe to be feared just as much as the machete wheedling stranger standing right outside your door …

There are several reasons why this link has persisted as long as the genre

has been evolving. The first is the feelings of fear a person experiences when watching a horror film. Your pulse quickens, your breath catches, you are jumpy and tense, waiting in anticipation for the next thrill to explode onto the screen. For many people this reaction is very arousing to their senses and that arousal is very similar to a sexual response.

Another reason sexuality and horror have traditionally been linked is because of horror movies status as adolescent and teen movies. Specifically male adolescents. What better way to draw in the core horror demographic than to play to your audience by showing a little skin?

The draw of the horror movies to this age group has been examined from a few angles. One of the current theories is that adolescents use horror movies as a rite of passage to prove just how much they can take, both to themselves and to

friends. The allure is watching the disturbing and graphic scenes and being brave enough to sit through it. They are showing their growth into adulthood by experiencing things that are disturbing and scary without running from them. Sex is another topic that can be scary for this age group since they are just starting to experience it. Pairing sex with horror means that teens can explore both these themes at the same time in a safe environment.

The duality of horror and sexuality have been in place since the very first

horror movie ever made. “Dracula” premiered in 1931 and told the story of a seductive vampire that could seduce and ensnare women to their deaths. The story also illustrated another reoccurring trend in the horror industries portrayal of women in regard to sexuality. The women involved in Dracula’s story were depicted to be under a trance and bewitched by his evil ways. The translation for the time period was that it was only okay for women to be sexual when they were under a spell or enchantment.

The duality of horror and sexuality have been in place since the very first horror movie ever made

A “good” women would not enjoy this type of behavior because was not supposed to have a sexual nature. A bewitched women could behave anyway she wanted without the fear of moral judgment. This idea must have been a very appealing idea to the Victorian women of the time who were told to deny their sexual natures and live such restricted lives. Perhaps the sexuality portrayed in horror films is a way to live out fantasies we are not supposed to acknowledge in our society.

These themes have persisted into current day horror films. It is a commonly accepted trend that when a character in a horror film engages in sexual behavior that character will be the first to die. Why is that? Many people believe it is a reflection of our cultures fear of sexuality. We have lived women’s lib and the sexual revolution but many Americans hold on to the idea that sex is bad and people (this is mostly directed at women) who embrace their sexuality are dangerous. Horror films help perpetuate this antiquated belief system.

The reasons for the pairing are multilayered and complex but the trend does not seem to be dying down. Since this trend has been around since the beginning of films it has become an institution in the genre. And really what would horror films be without it? The campy, predictable story lines, and the in-your-face gore are what we pay for and what we expect from a horror movie. Throw in a little sensuality and you have set the stage for the perfect American horror experience.

A HISTORY

According to ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and the Romans, ghosts are considered to be the souls of our dearly departed, lingering here to assist the living. So why should we be so frightened by them? Perhaps it is because we cannot touch them. Traditionally, ghosts are invisible or translucent in some human-like form. It may be possible their intentions for revisiting the living are not so innocent. We freak when we see something we know to be gone, and we begin to question what is real. Whatever the reason, it chills us to the bone, and sightings and encounters continue to occur and have been for a very long time.

These stories explain the sightings of ghosts and paranormal that I have experienced first hand. Some of my stories may shock or amaze you, because they defy the natural laws we

know to exist. They have profoundly affected my life and changed my perspective on life and what happens in the after life.

PERSONAL TESTIMONY

There have been many occasions throughout my life where I believe I have been visited by a ghost or spirit. When growing up, I often thought there was something wrong with my house. But ironically, it turned out to be one of the animals that lived in our house that was cursed by spirits.

EXPERIENCE No. 1

A typical evening for me included watching television with my cats before bed. I was lying in bed one night with my cat Wiley. Wiley was somewhat of a black cat. She was more dark grayish but she possessed the attributes of a typical “black cat”. I have never been extremely superstitious, but I believe that there are some unexplainable events

that happen for unknown reasons. Let’s just say that I do not go out of my way to break superstitions.

The TV was up fairly loud. No one else was home and I was enjoying my alone time with the animals. Wiley was in a good mood, had been purring and playing with my feet under the covers. The lights were on because I wasn’t ready to go to sleep yet and I was sitting up in bed, looking out to the rest of the room. I was focused on the TV show when all of the sudden out of the corner of my eye I saw a toy mouse fly up from the ground and hit Wiley. She got up all pissed off and ran to the edge of the bed as to attack whomever threw it but was surprised … nothing. She glanced over at me as if she were asking, “Did you throw it?”

I said, “Don’t look at me, I didn’t do it.” It was a strange occurrence and I got up and searched the

whole house, checking to see if it was a prank someone was playing on me. No one was home. It is impossible for a fake mouse to fly up from the ground and hit the cat unless someone or something was behind the object throwing it.

EXPERIENCE No. 2

My dad (Dan) has been playing music since I could remember. Music was always an important part of both his and my life. When I was in elementary school, he was in a band called Keeva. He had practice every Monday night. Dan would leave for practice at about 5:00pm and return around 10:00pm. In doing so, his

typical routine would be to pull in the driveway, unlock and open the garage door and pull the car into the garage. You could hear him open the garage door, walk in, set his accordion down and walk up the stairs to his bedroom. He had been following this same routine for years.

Throughout the lifespan of our cat Wiley strange occurrences happened. Fifteen minutes prior to Dan coming home from practice, my mom would hear what seemingly would have been my dad home early, however once the footsteps hit the top of the stairs, there appeared no one. Wiley always ran to the edge of the bed and

began growling. There was someone or something impersonating my dad. When 10:00 rolled around, the exact same process would take place except my dad would appear at the top of the stairs. This freaked my whole family out. At first, we weren’t sure if my mom was just dreaming or imagining things, but it wasn’t until I was in bed with her when it happened and I was able to witness it. One of the scariest things to feel and to witness are noises with no explanation. These events took place for the years we had Wiley. Once she passed away, we no longer had any signs of visitations for spirits or ghosts.

EXPERIENCE No. 3

As a child, my brother and I were often left alone during the day. Both of my parents worked typical 9–5 jobs and we could not afford baby sitters. Ironically, my parents trusted us more than sitters anyways. We had several experiences to which baby sitters were untrustworthy and my brother, Lyle, and myself were mature for our age. Lyle is two years older than me, and when he promoted to Jr. High, I was still in 5th grade at a different school from him. At 11-years-old, I was left home alone to get ready and walk to school.

I would wake up, go upstairs to take a shower, come downstairs and my bedroom light would be turned on. The first few times I thought I just accidentally turned it on upon going up to the bathroom. It wasn’t until a week into it that I realized someone was coming behind me and turning the light on. Except there was no one else home.

EXPERIENCE No. 4

I lived in Ferndale, Washington for about six months with an ex boyfriend. We often went over to his best friend, James’s, house. They had some property that had a barn, which James had turned

into a game room. There were darts, pool tables, ping-pong tables and a bunch of other little oddball games. James’s mother used to tell me about how their property was haunted by the previous owner named Charlie. Charlie was just an ordinary farmer who kept to himself most of the time, until one night, someone came in and brutally murdered him. Police never found any suspects and eventually the case was dropped. No one ever found out what took place that night. Charlie had been seen around the property from several other friends and family members of James.

It was a full moon that night. Two of us couples had been playing pool until the wee hours of the night. There are no streetlights in the country, so when its night time in Ferndale, WA, its dark. Except this night was different. Everything was illuminated from the moon. As we were walking out of the barn to lock up, we walked upstairs and just as I was exiting I saw something out of the corner of my eye—a shadow of someone against the refrigerator in the moonlight. I went to take a good look at this object, but it was gone. Funny thing about ghosts is, they don’t like to be seen

straight on. Most typically sneak in there in the corner of peoples’ eyes and leave before they can get a good look. I had been aware of the previous sightings, however one can never fully prepare for an unexplainable sighting such as a ghost. So it scared the crap out of me. I told the others about what I had seen and they smirked and said, “Sounds like Charlie came out to say hi.” A little shaken up by this, I was not able to sleep that night. But I never saw Charlie again.

EXPERIENCE No. 5

My friend and I decided to go on a trip to stay the night at a haunted hotel. I was pretty skeptic, but she was really into the whole paranormal world. When we got there we were given a tour of the grounds, and the basement. It was once a courthouse, jailhouse, and an execution chamber all in one, until a wealthy entrepreneur in the 1800s renovated it as a hotel. He supposedly had many mistresses, and after being caught by his wife in the act of debauchery, she drowned the children and hung herself.

I was tired after the drive there, so I headed for bed right away. My girlfriend wanted to have some fun and drink at the bar downstairs, so I was alone in the room. Even though I was incredibly tired I found it extremely difficult to fall asleep. I felt like the room was spinning, or warping, or something. All of the furniture was placed at weird angles. I’d never slept in a room like that before.

I lay there a while with my eyes closed trying to fall asleep, but I kept hearing children playing. They were laughing and running down the hallways. The laughter was mixed

with the sound of a rushing wind, or a low rumble. It kept getting louder and louder until it was almost deafening. My eyes were still closed but I kept picturing the same thing; a girl with a red scarf blowing in the wind as she danced down the hallways. This vision appeared almost as I was dreaming, however, when I opened my eyes to see, the room fell completely silent, almost as if all the sound in the world had been vacuumed out into a place far away. I couldn’t even hear myself breathing.

At the time I didn’t feel like moving, but I forced myself out of bed,

and found the light switch. It had gotten dark in the short amount of time I was there. Finally I could hear the sound of the light flicking on, and me sitting on the bed, and everything I could normally hear before. Maybe I did fall asleep and had not realized it, but I felt creeped me out enough to go get some drinks myself. I joined my friend downstairs and we had a great time dancing the night away.

The next morning, we awoke and walked down to the lobby, but there was no one around anywhere. I walked outside and down the street but still saw no one. We left to go get breakfast, and then headed home.

I LAY THERE A WHILE WITH MY EYES CLOSED TRYING TO FALL ASLEEP, BUT I KEPT HEARING CHILDREN PLAYING. THEY WERE LAUGHING AND RUNNING DOWN THE HALLWAYS. THE LAUGHTER WAS MIXED WITH THE SOUND OF A RUSHING WIND.

THE VENUE

The historic Tower Theatre was built in 1938 and is now a Sacramento landmark.

It contains three separate screening rooms and its original neon lights on the exterior still run every night.

Sacramento’s seventh annual horror film festival is coming up; where will you be? The Sacramento Horror Film Festival is a showcase for horror films that have awed, disgusted, and even inspired those with a passion for the horror film.

With its opening year in 2005, the Sacramento community was ready for a test drive, and since then, it’s been a hit for all ages. Horror movie buffs as well as newcomers to the horror movie genre have all come to the Sacramento Horror Film Festival, located at one of Sacramento’s landmark gems, the Tower Theatre.

This year’s event, held October 26–28, will focus on “The Best of the Worst” horror flicks. Three films will be shown this year: Troll 2, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Monsturd.

These films can be called some of the worst horror films in the history of horror films, but somehow, fans still gravitate toward them for

their horrible charm. This year’s featured film, Troll 2, first made its debut in October 1990. Now a cult classic around the United States, special screenings for this film have been in high demand around the country since its debut. The movie is hilariously terrible as protagonist Joshua, with the help of his grandfather, a ghost in the movie, are in charge of the fight against those out to get his family in the town of Nilbog.

Troll 2 has many quirks that make it one of the “Best of the Worst” horror films. Though Italian director and writer, Claudio Fragasso, brought in his entire Italian film crew to the United States to shoot the film, the entire script, written in poor English, had to be read verbatim. The cast opted to read the script in more proper English but Fragasso stubbornly wanted the script read his way. The catch of the film? The entire cast showed up to a casting call in hopes of being extras, but ending up getting the lead roles.

One actor, Don Packard, who played the shopkeeper in the town of Nilbog, was on leave from staying at a mental hospital when he decided to try out for Troll 2.

He played his role seemingly perfectly, and years after filming the movie, Packard admitted that his

acting in the film was in actuality how he normally acted as a mentally institutionalized individual. While the movie has no significance toward trolls, it does play a significant role toward vegetarian goblins. It is said that the goblins were vegetarians due to the fact that Fragasso and his wife decided to go vegetarian shortly before the movie was filmed. To this day, Fragrasso has no clue why he named the film Troll 2.

Each of these films will be shown at the same time on each day during the festival, starting at 7 p.m. Plan 9 from Outer Space will begin at 7 p.m. in one theatre, Monsturd start at 8 p.m. in another, and Troll 2 will begin at 9 p.m. in the third theatre. For those who are excited to watch the featured films multiple times with their kin, this can be a big plus for their weekend in Sacramento. Tower Theatre is highly accommodating with plenty of parking, a concessions stand, clean and comfortable seating, as well as student discounts.

If you decide to arrive early, you can always dine at the highly recommended Tower Cafe, which serves a wide variety of cuisine around the world, and has a wonderful atmosphere, both indoors and outdoors. Come with friends and family for an unforgettable weekend in the heart of downtown Sacramento.

Fear triggers romantic attraction when caused by something present in the environment. By combining the nervousness of a first date and the suspense of the horror movie, the couple is more likely to come in contact with one another for comfort.

It is not unlikely for males to take their date to a scary movie, hoping she will want him to comfort her. For example, in a television show called “Saved by the Bell”, a character named Zach takes multiple dates to the same horror movie in search for the woman with the best scream/cuddle combination.

Many men thrive on the idea of being the comforting lead. Breeching the touch barrier may

include laying her head on his shoulder, sitting close to one another, holding hands, cuddling and possibly kissing. Horror films not only bring two people together on an attraction level, but are also a way for two people to unite emotional fears brought to the surface from the movie.

The emotional fear may be described as something that people want, crave or are interested in. Because of this craving, the urge is to experience

it, whether it is from a movie or from a first date. Feeling one’s heart race triggers new emotions from a mundane routine. People may be curious not only for the villain to be revealed, but they are also concerned with whether or not the date is going well enough to have physical touch introduced into the equation. A similar adrenaline rush is experienced through both events. By creating ruses, one’s life becomes more interesting and exciting—eliminating dull and repetitive experiences.

According to the book “Consumer Behavior”, Frank Kardes mentions that watching a scary movie can produce arousal, which can be transferred to one’s date at the movies. Transference tends to produce a more intense emotional response than the original arousal. Because people are bad at interpreting, their emotional states of the horror movie can be misinterpreted as a romantic

attraction to the other party. Time is key; if people attempt to interpret their emotions while watching the horror movie, fear, rather than emotional attachment, would be discovered, whereas if evaluating one’s emotions after such movie takes place, the latter would be found.

Whether male or female, horror movies on first dates can be a perfect solution if the intended emotion is to provoke arousal or

to breech the touch barrier. Men should be aware that most females are waiting for them to make the first move, but likewise, females should understand it is ok to occasionally jump in headfirst. It is currently the twenty-first century, where gender does not discriminate against feminine domination.

It is not a complete coincidence that you may have noticed a vague familiarity between the theme song to the movie Halloween and Linkin Park’s 2007 hit “What I’ve Done.” (If you haven’t you should listen to them and judge for yourself).

You’d be surprised at how many horror fifilms have inspired bands to lean towards the fear factor.

Although Linkin Park may not be as influenced by horror films as Marilyn Manson, whose musical inspiration

will continue to redene the horror industry, their subtle suspenseful instrumental nuances remind us very much of the everyday horrors we face.

Marilyn Manson is on a whole other level when it comes to theatrics. His musical, albeit maniacal, masterpieces

deserve special recognition in the world of horror. Not only has he contributed a vast amount of horrific imagery on stage and in his music videos, but he has appeared in many minor television and big

screen roles. Since 2004 he has been

working on a horror film of his own called Phantasmagoria: The Visions Of

Lewis Carroll, and will star the lead role, as well as producing the entire original soundtrack. Manson will not be the first horror-inspired metal musician to produce a horror film. Rob Zombie is nightmares ahead of

him in that regard. Zombie’s debut film, House of 1000 Corpses, was not only a big success but it lead him to produce four more horror films in just five years, and has been involved in the production of dozens of others. He currently has his hands full with his new movie, The Lords of Salem,

and is recording a brand new album. He hasn’t given up on his musial endeavors despite his band members being snatched up numorous times by other musician aquaintences.

Both Manson and Zombie are in their mid-forties and have had some time to really bask in a breadth of horror

Every genre of music these days have contribited to the horror film while also highly influencing and appealing to the younger generations. Artists such as Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, and Michael Jackson paved the way with their hits.

influences over the years. Artists just getting started in the act still have a lot to learn. Some might say Lady Gaga’s music videos are a frightfest of misguided imagery and scary settings, but her music doesn’t really play the part. Gaga’s poppy dance tunes get the party jumping, not running for the hills. Her style can be compared to Madonna’s over-the-top stunning sexuality, but features a freaky air that

raises hair and eyebrows, especially in her music video, Alejandro, where she is shown dressed in religious attire to appeal to the darker side of our sinful nature. Gaga’s strategy to coax us into sin is no new act. The horror genre has traditionally been associated with religion as far back as its inception. The very first horror films were based on euronovels featuring crucix-chased vampires and end-of-days walking dead zombie-pocolypses. Every horror film is a little bit of hell on

earth. Creeping the horror theme into broader genres of music such as dance and pop tends to grab the attention of more and more musicians.

Two of today's top competing female artists, Rhianna and Katy Perry, both have dabbled in their own versions of terror films with Disturbia and Alien. Rhianna may not have drawn her inspiration from Shia LeBouf ’s film, Disturbia, because her video seems to resemble elements from

the film Hostel, with a hint of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The song is surprisingly upbeat for how dark the lyrics are. But her freakiest music video by far has to be S&M, as the video features every sort of sexual deviant that might either gag you, or send you crying to mommy.

So whether you listen to goth, pop, metal, industrial, or even nowadays hip-hop and R&B, you may find yourself on a dark path down a visual splendor of twisted torture of the senses.

Research, throwing ideas around, sketches, lists, tears, fist fights, and more made the magazine what it is today: a new spin on the horror film genre and how it appeals not just to men but also women. Senior year is always a stressful year for college students. Wrapping up final class requirements, double-checking lists, applying for graduation.What most people don’t understand is how much goes into the graphic design major at CSU Sacramento. Drawing, sketching, and brainstorming for homework may seem like an easy task for outside majors, but it isn’t all about the mindless doodes on the edge of your page.

Richard Pratt’s magazine production class gave each senior a chance to collaborate as a team while coming up with a sophisticated magazine system. This year’s topic for the Pratt’s magazine class was movie genres: Sci-Fi, Foreign, Independent, and Horror. Each student took a poll with questions that narrowed which genre they enjoyed the most.

Five students per genre, and our group landed together, and worked as a team to come up with a redesign of the traditional horror magazine. No excess gore, only a glamorization of horror.
