Welcome BackTo Bath Spa University! We are very excited to be welcoming you back to the start of another year at Bath Spa University. Since you have been away there has been some very exciting changes happening around the University and the Students’ Union, all with the intention of making your time at Bath Spa University as great as it can be.

You might be aware that being a student at Bath Spa University automatically gives you the privilege of being a member of the Students’ Union. This gives you the right to use the facilities of the Students’ Union and allows you access to the resources and services which the Students’ Union offers. So remember whoever you are, whatever you do, wherever you come from, we have got something to offer you!

Students’ Union TeamAs you can probably recall, the elections in March resulted in Rich, Harry and Dan being elected to be your Students’ Union Sabbatical representatives. We would like to thank you all for getting involved and participating in the election process.

The Students’ Union is an organisation separate from the University with students’ interests at the heart of everything it does. As well as having the Sabbaticals, the Students’ Union has Part-time officers and Liberation representatives to maximise student representation and also, full-time and part-time staff which provide a variety of services and offer friendly, honest advice.

PRESIDENT:WELFARE & REPRESENTATIONHello! My name is Richard and my job at the Students’ Union is to be your President. I hope you have enjoyed your summer break and are now ready for another year at Bath Spa University.

My role here at the SU, is to represent you. This means that I am in charge of representing your views and listening to issues that concern you; this can be anything from your studies to your home life. We at the SU can then act on your concerns or steer you in the right direction to find a solution with the sole intention of improving your experience. So, if for any reason you need a helping hand or a friendly face to talk to, I am here for you!

My aim for this coming year is to offer you the best opportunities other than what you learn in your lectures, to maintain the friendly and welcoming mentality of the SU and to get to know you all. I look forward to seeing you all again.

Please remember no problem is too big or too small and never feel silly about asking questions. Feel free to contact me.

VICE-PRESIDENT:ACTIVITIES & PARTICIPATIONWelcome back to Bath Spa University! This next year is going to be a proper laugh at BSU with loads of changes.

This year it is my job to get you involved in your SU; to provide you with as many opportunities to join in via sport, societies, trips and volunteering. It is difficult to stress how much getting involved with a club or a society can improve your student experience, you end up with loads more friends overnight, meet like minded people and have great time in the process.

If you want to find out more about any of the clubs or societies make sure you come along to the Freshers’ Fair on Wed 29th Sept, or if you can not wait until then, why not check out the clubs and society pages on our website www.bathspasu.co.uk

In terms of events this year there are lots of changes. We have several new club nights both at the SU and in town which offer new deals, new themes, new prizes and new everything! In addition, there is a new look SU which is being refurbished this summer. So make sure you check it out! I hope you have a great week!

VICE-PRESIDENT:CAMPAIGNS & COMMUNICATIONHello and welcome to another year at Bath Spa University! I’m Harry your new Vice - President for Campaigns and Communications. I will be working as part of the Sabbatical team at the Students’ Union. My duties include organising campaigns, creating awareness of student issues and co-ordinating all SU communications. In addition, I am very approachable, so if you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact me!

The academic year ahead will see the birth of SU media group, called SpaLife. This will include a podcast radio, magazine and TV channel with effect from Freshers’ week 2010. The importance of the SU’s media content will be that information is derived from students to be consumed by students. If you fancy getting involved with SpaLife then get in touch with me via e-mail or come up to the SU building and see me in person.

Additionally, this year will see the launch of a series of student led awareness weeks with the emphasis being on having students at the forefront of the campaigns. This aims to create imaginative, inspired and exciting campaigns.

How much do you love your laptop? Your coursework, your Facebook, your photos… And if it’s stolen…You’re gutted!Bath and Bath Spa University are very safe places to live in. However, low crime doesn’t mean no crime, and there are easy things you can do to keep yourself safe.‘Student Watch’ is all about students keeping students safe. Find out how to keep yourself safe on a night out and look after your belongings – all from other students. Look out for the eye-catching promotions around campus, but in the meantime here are our top tips to keep you and your belongings safe:Register your belongings: Post code your belongings and keep them out of sight of prying eyes.Register serial numbers of any items with serial codes, such as mobiles, laptops at www.immobilise.com. It’s free and can help to retrieve items should they be stolen.Watch your drink: Never leave your drink unattended. Whilst drink spiking does happen, the reality is that alcohol alone is far more likely to put you at risk of being the victim or perpetrator of attacks, robberies, muggings and sexual assault.Stay alert: If you are wearing headphones or chatting on your mobile you will be distracted from your surroundings and may not hear trouble approaching.Listen to your instincts: If you feel threatened, head for a safe place where there are lots of people such as a pub, shop or garage.Plan ahead: Know how you are going to get home before you head out for the evening.Carry the number of a trusted taxi firm or know where the taxi ranks are. Volunteering is a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills, do something useful for the community and most of all – have fun! We have a huge range of activities on offer to match your interests and how much time you want to give.

To give you an idea of what is on offer, if you want to get involved:

• Occasionally – ideal if you want a taster ofvolunteering. Why not go on a Quickie – a one-off, one day activity, or join in a fundraising event.

• Regularly, but for up to one term – ideal if youhave a few hours each week and want to see a project through to its completion. You could do a volunteering project; run an awareness raising campaign with the Students’ Union, or share your skills and talents with the local community through your society or sports club.

• Regularly, but over a longer period of time– ideal if you want to commit to an organisation or cause. Our database can help you match your needs with organisations looking for volunteers. These opportunities range from youth work to PRto community radio.

As well as making friends and having a great time, volunteering is a fantastic way to use your talents to help other people whilst developing new skills. By volunteering you are setting yourself apart from the crowd. All volunteers can work towards the University’s Certificate in Volunteer Achievement and we hold a prestigious award ceremony in May recognising excellence across the whole range of volunteering activities on offer.

To get involved, visit the Just V stand at the Freshers’ Fair for further information and to find out about the latest opportunities.
