PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS By Jim Crawford, Historian

We had 78 HRC members attend and enjoy our Christmas wing ding on December 16. Along with a delicious ham dinner we enjoyed caroling and a Christmas story. Many prizes were distributed and the fellowship was excellent. Bob Anderson led us in singing traditional

songs. We sang Silent Night to conclude the program and as a non-rehearsed group we had 79 voices do the song some real justice if I say so myself. Louisa and I wish you the very Merriest of Christmas's and a Joyous New Year. Feliz Navidad and Feliz Ano Nuevo! Now, the continuing saga of the comparison and contrasts of our two most famous generals of the Civil War or of any American historical era.

Robert E. Lee Between the Wars: After the Mexican War Lee was assigned to Fort Carroll that guarded the entrance to Baltimore Harbor at that time. Fort Carroll was further down the Chesapeake Bay toward the Atlantic Ocean than its more famous contemporary, Fort McHenry. It was, therefore, more isolated and did not afford the proper accommodations for officers’ families.

His assignment at Fort Carroll was interrupted periodically to lead survey expeditions into Florida with the purpose of locating and designing appropriate defense emplacements. One of his chosen locations and designs was Fort Desoto on Mullet Key. It was not constructed until after the Civil War, but was one of Major Lee's chosen emplacements for defense of the many bays and ports along the Florida coast. Others were Fort Clinch on Amelia Island, Fort Pickens near Pensacola, and Fort Barrancas (now a part of Pensacola Naval Air Station). He was also instrumental in the construction and reinforcement of Fort Pulaski near the mouth of the Savannah River. This fort later became the site of an instrumental battle and siege during the Civil War.

At the time Lee was at Fort Carroll, a Cuban revolutionary, Narcisco Lopez, intended to liberate Cuba from Spanish rule. In searching for an American ally to aid his attempt he approached then Senator Jefferson Davis who declined but suggested Lee. Lee also declined because it was inconsistent with his duties. This was the first historical interaction between Lee and Davis.

West Point: In 1852 Brevet Colonel Robert E. Lee was appointed Superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point. He was extremely reluctant to enter the "snake pit" as he called it. It was a very difficult period in Lee's life. His wife was becoming more and more incapacitated from a debilitating affliction. He also was strapped with managing a large plantation while attempting to further his military career. He became obsessed and morbidly concerned with potential personal failure. Failure was not in the lexicon of the Lee family tree.

Lee spent an inordinate amount of time with the cadets at West Point and improved the living conditions immensely. He also improved the academic course work to bring the academy up to the educational standards of other colleges of the time such as Harvard, William & Mary, Yale, etc. His oldest son George Washington Curtis Lee graduated from West Point in 1854 while Lee was superintendent.

Texas: In 1855 Lee received his long awaited promotion to Lt. Colonel and was rewarded with the second-in-command of the Second Cavalry regiment in Texas. It meant leaving the Engineering Corp and its many staff jobs for a combat command that he sorely desired. He served under Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston at Camp Cooper in Texas and was responsible for the protection of settlers from Apache and Comanche raids.

Arlington Plantation: In 1857 Lee's father-in-law died leaving Lee the responsibility as executor of the will. The Arlington Plantation was inherited by Lee's wife but had to be titled to the male survivor by marriage according to the then antiquated laws. Part of the will declared that vast slave holdings be emancipated over a five year period. Encumbered with massive debt from mismanagement, the emancipation was not as easily accomplished as one would believe. Lee attempted to find and hire an overseer to administer the affairs of the plantation and accomplish the emancipation. This effort failed forcing Lee to take a leave of absence from the military for two years. He ran the plantation himself for these two years. The experience was frustrating because the slaves understood that their previous master had ordered their freedom in his will. The slaves rebelled and refused to obey orders. Alexandria. In less than two months these slaves along with three female house slaves were sent under lock and key to a slave-trader by the order of Lee. They were to be kept in jail until responsible slaveholders could work them until the five-year period for their freedom expired.

Many differing accounts exist on the subject of this dark period in Lee's otherwise honorable history. It is alleged that Lee had the three escaped slaves whipped (one was a woman). It is alleged also that Lee applied the lash himself. There is little doubt that some form of punishment was applied, but the assertion that Lee did it personally is very much doubted. Lee was quoted often as being opposed to slavery, however, never actively made any attempt to abolish the practice. Suffice it to say that the horrid practice was very much a part of his plantation life. It is no excuse, but it was the way of economy of the South and no easy solution was ever brought forth that would appease all parties.

Harper's Ferry: In October 1859 John Brown led a band of 21 abolitionists to seize the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. (now in West Virginia) President James Buchanan assigned Colonel Robert E. Lee a detachment of militia, soldiers, and United States Marines to suppress the uprising and arrest the leaders. Brown and his hostages were surrounded by local militia by the time Lee arrived. At dawn Lee demanded Brown's surrender. Brown refused, Lee attacked, and after three minutes of fighting it was over. Brown and his followers were all captured. Lee's summary of the whole affair in his official report was that it "was the attempt of a fanatic or madman". Brown was convicted of treason and hanged December 2, 1859.

Texas Secession: In February 1861 Texas seceded from the Union. General David E. Twiggs surrendered all the American forces of about 4,000 men including Robert E. Lee. Twiggs immediately resigned from The U. S. Army and was made a Confederate general. Lee returned to Washington and was appointed Colonel of the First Regiment of Cavalry in March 1861. Three weeks after his promotion Lee was offered a senior command as Major General by President Abraham Lincoln to lead the fight against the Southern States that had left the Union. Lee could not rationalize taking up arms against his fellow Virginians. He resigned his commission in the U. S. Army and retired to Arlington.

Next month we begin the Civil War as witnessed by these two iconic figures.

Last month’s trivia asked the following questions about James Buchanan.

1. What state was he from? Pennsylvania.

2. Who was Harriet Lane? She was Buchanan's niece and served as Hostess of the White House during his administration. Buchanan was a bachelor; therefore there was no First Lady.

3. What is "Wheatland’s"? This is Buchanan's ancestral home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and can be visited today as one of the many presidential homes that have thankfully been preserved for our historical legacy and education.

This month’s trivia: How did Harper's Ferry get moved to West Virginia? This is a bit of a trick question; think about it.

Gene's Health Tip: The Plague No One Wants To Talk About I'm talking about the real culprit behind modern chronic diseases -- from Alzheimer's, rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease to diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer, which essentially makes it the leading cause of death in the US. These devastating diseases are not the result of cholesterol or your genes or some mysterious cellular malfunction either, as mainstream medicine would like you to believe. The white blood cells swarm, but have nothing to do and nowhere to go, and they sometimes eventually start attacking internal organs or other necessary tissues and cells. Other times, the threat is real but we do not feel it or the inflammatory response, and the inflammation can persist forever. This persistent inflammation can lead to the diseases mentioned above. Chronic, low-grade inflammation often does not have symptoms until one of the diseases actually manifest itself. Your doctor can prescribe a C-Reactive Protein (CRP) blood test to measure the level of inflammation. Causes of chronic inflammation are excess weight, poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, smoking, pollution, poor oral health and excessive alcohol consumption. Besides eliminating the causes of chronic inflammation one can introduce spices into your diet that pack a powerful anti-inflammatory punch. These spices are listed in the order of their ability to fight low-grade inflammation: 1. Cloves 2. Ginger 3. Rosemary 4. Turmeric 5. Cinnamon 6. Jamaican allspice 7. Apple pie spice mixture 8. Doing the Most Good Your Honeywell Retiree’s Club volunteers helped out those less fortunate in the community on Thursday, December 10 by ringing the bell by a Red Kettle. For the fifth year volunteers stood outside a food store and rang the bell in shifts for an entire day. This year, the Publix on Belcher and Gulf-to-Bay was the location. There were eleven volunteers who put on the red Salvation Army apron and greeted shoppers outside Publix. Last year we collected about $325. We will get a report in January of our collections for this year.                                                                Others volunteering were John Bowers, John & Penny Voissem, Emilie & Ben Carter and Evelyn & Byron Hall.

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving.

HONEYBELLES HAVE QUIETLY LEFT THE BUILDING/spufferJ Though my feet were firmly planted in my fervent belief that Honeybelles’ needed to take a graceful, well-deserved bow, but in its misery of being dragged on and on, it did not happen. I tried to bring about discussion of ending a once-great organization but a few thought they knew better. Nevertheless, tonight members in attendance voted to bring the Grand Dame to an end. I was not one of them. I knew the vote could only go one way and it was enough, too much, for me. At the end of the meeting, I was one of very few who spoke at all of not being happy about its closure. That saddened me greatly to see an organization I loved so much and had to wait 5 years to join - die. Words do not come to me right now to brag about all Honeybelle’s unbelievably, successful, over-the-top, accomplishments during its 51st-year journey. It was born of the female gene of creativity and talents, of fun, thoughtfulness, happiness, dedication to career, to Honeywell, to more fun, to Pinellas County communities in which they all lived, as well as their capability of thinking outside the box, thinking things were actually bigger and better working collectively than on their own. What a concept! What a recipe for success! Honeybelles’ touched many, many lives with great positivity within the Honeywell and Pinellas County communities. She deserves her reward.

DARWIN AWARDS 1. When his .38 caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a hold-up in Long Beach, California would-be robber James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again. This time it worked. And Now, The Honorable Mentions: 2. The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat-cutting machine and after a little shopping around, submitted a claim to his insurance company. The company expecting negligence sent out one of its men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine and he also lost a finger. The chef's claim was approved. 3. A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his vehicle to find a woman had taken the space. Understandably, he shot her. 4. After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was supposed to be transporting from Harare to Bulawayo had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone waiting there a free ride. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't discovered for 3 days. 5. An American teenager was in the hospital recovering from serious head wounds received from an oncoming train. When asked how he received the injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit. 6. A man walked into a Louisiana Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter, and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer... $15. [If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, is a crime committed?] 7. Seems an Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. The liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape. 8. As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, Yes, officer, that's her. That's the lady I stole the purse from." 9. The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 5 A.M., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast... The frustrated gunman walked away. [*A 5-STAR STUPIDITY AWARD WINNER] 10. When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street by sucking on a hose, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline, but he plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had and the perpetrator had been punished enough!

It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it.

The Gift of Time The last wishes of Alexander the Great...On his death bed, Alexander summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes: The best doctors should carry his coffin... The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery... His hands should be let loose, so they hang outside the coffin for all to see !! One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say: "I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal." "I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth." I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is: TIME: We do not take to our grave any material wealth. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life! The best present that you can give to your family and friends is your TIME. May God grant you plenty of TIME, to share with all.

From the Grounds Crew by Ben Carter Now that it has stopped raining and grass has stopped growing and we have entered the slow time with not much to do…. just like magic a new project has appeared. We have a retention pond out in the backyard that is full of cattails. A government agent from SWIFTMUD came by and explained that the cattails are causing the attention pond to retain too much water. The crew and I had a pretty good laugh at that. I talked it over with Dan Bordeaux and I said I thought the crew could take out the tails with weed killer and weed eaters, then rake up the debris. I think I have underestimated the job. We have renamed the pond, “The Muck Pond.” The muck is more like quicksand mixed with glue, and as I told Jim Crawford, it’s the third worse thing I ever waded in; he would not let me talk about the first two. I could not believe the root system of these plants, huge, one-inch diameter roots running everywhere. We may have to pay to have it done. We will keep at it for a week or two, and then make a decision.

'hmmm’, she said, 'I think I'll part my hair down the middle today.' So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. 'Well,' she said, 'today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail.' MAN WALKS INTO CHICK-FIL-A: Completely Blown Away

When He Saw This For Veterans Day    

by Bill Callen | Top Right News   Chick-Fil-A, the same fast-food outlet that constantly gets accused by liberals of being evil, has once again proved the opposite to the world. This time they did so by unveiling an amazing Veteran’s Day tribute that left Georgia resident, Eric Comfort in complete shock. According to a Facebook post he published on Monday, when he walked into a local Chick-Fil-

A, Comfort discovered a “Missing Man Table” that contained a single rose, a Bible and a folded American flag, as well as a plaque within which was the following explanation: “This table is reserved to honor our missing comrades in arms. The tablecloth is white — symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call of duty. The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the life of each of the missing and their loved ones and friends of these Americans who keep the faith, awaiting answers. The vase is tied with a red ribbon, symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers. The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. The glass is inverted — to symbolize their inability to share this evening’s toast. The chair is empty — they are missing.”

After the story went viral, the store manager, Alex Korchan, explained to WSB that his team members had set up the table because they “wanted to honor veterans”. Furthermore, he revealed that he planned to offer free meals to all veterans and their family members this Veteran’s Day between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Korchan also put up a poster so that customers could write in the names of loved ones who they have lost. “We’ve had a lot of people who have come in and seen it and been touched by it,” Korchan continued. “It’s been special to see.”  Most liberals could learn something from Chick-Fil-A this Veteran’s Day — assuming of course that, for once, they’re able to put aside political ideology and learn.
