- 316 Every Hour - 7,596 Everyday - 2.8MM in 2011Source: USA TodayHealthcare OpportunityAmerica's 78 million Baby Bloomers will begin turning 65 at a rate of one every 10 seconds.

Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs) continue to be a problem in healthcare settings.

Environmental Services continue to struggle due to turnover and training.

WHAT do we Know?

(3 million to 4 million per year). The sheer statistical numbers of our Baby Boomer Demographic alone means that we are becoming a larger and larger part of nearly every physician's practice.Statistics show that two-thirds of all Baby Bloomers have at least one chronic disease and have seen seven physicians.

6Healthcare Expenditures1980 $256 Million 2010 Approximately $2.6 Trillion or 17.9% of the United States GDP

Projected to Represent One-Fifth of the US Economy by 20217Healthcare OpportunityIn todays Environment of the Healthcare setting, regardless of departmental functions, we are in the fight to SAVE lives...

The Changing Healthcare EnvironmentNOT COST!!The importance of infection prevention and control is increasing due to rapidly developing strains of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs) that can result in serious illness and even death in workers and patients. Improvements in the health and environmental impacts of cleaning and disinfecting must be considered along with concerns for infection prevention and control.

8Healthcare Opportunity

Restaurants and cruise ships are inspected for cleanliness.

Food processing plants are tested for bacterial content on cutting boards and equipment.

The Changing Healthcare EnvironmentBut hospitals, even operating rooms, are exempt. The Joint Commission, which inspects and accredits U.S. hospitals, doesn't measure cleanliness. Neither does most state health departments, nor the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

9DISTURBING Data

LACK of HYGIENE in HospitalsResearchers who examined 49 operating rooms found that more than half of the objects that should have been disinfected were overlooked.

New data presented in April at the annual meeting of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America documented the lack of hygiene in hospitals and its relationship to deadly infections.

10DISTURBING Data

LACK of HYGIENE in HospitalsA study of patient rooms in 20 hospitals found that more than half the surfaces that should have been cleaned for new patients were left dirty.

DISTURBING Data

LACK of HYGIENE in HospitalsAn occupied room clean will take approximately 18 to 25 minutes per room.

A Terminal clean will take approximately 40 to 60 minutes per room.

To ensure consistent quality of cleaning and adequate staffing resources for infection prevention, a total facility cleaning standard should be agreed upon in advance by Environmental Services, Infection Prevention and Operations or Administrative Management

12DISTURBING Data

HAIs are getting WORSEHealthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs) continue to be a problem in healthcare settings:

HAIs account for: Estimated 1.7 million infections annually99,000 associated deaths each year HAIs affect 5 to 10% of hospitalized patients annually HAIs add over $30 to 45 billion to healthcare costs each year 13DISTURBING Data

DISTURBING Data

HAIs are getting WORSEPer patient hospital costs can increase from $2,500 to $7,000 per patient because of C. difficile related infections.C.difficile infections cost at least $1 billion in extra healthcare costs annually.
