Introduction

With changing lifestyles, high income growth, faster than ever changing fashions – there is no denying the fact that the retail industry today has been climbing the ladder of growth at a phenomenally rapid pace. The traditional grocery store has given its way to the big supermarkets and malls which has led to manifold increase in retail business. With increase in size and number of retail organizations there is cut throat competition between the different players. It is widely felt that the key differentiator between the successful and the not so successful players is mainly in their outlook towards adopting new technology. Customer satisfaction is the most important element of retail sales for which most retail organizations today are keen to automate their existing systems and adopt upcoming technologies with open arms. As the retailers are scaling up their business, the need of the hour is a robust IT system to manage stock and customers

Challenges

Though retail business has reached a point of inflexion today but the increasedtransaction volumes, increase in customer numbers together with increased complexity in product manufacture and never ending competition makes it extremely difficult to achieve customer expectations. As the retailers are scaling up the business, some of the challenging issues as below.

Slow Billing: Long queue at the billing section is one of the most common scenarios visible today at all the retail stores. Current systems installed cannot read multiple items together at the time of billing leading to wastage of customer's precious time. There need to be a system which can read multiple items together thus saving time and increasing efficiency.

Difficult Stock Verification: Physical stock verification is a tedious job involving manual labor. Present system used doesn’t allow reading the items without taking it from the rack. It is very time consuming to take items from rack, scan one by one and re-arrange back in racks.

Theft: With increase in volume of goods and the number of customers, security of goods is of prime importance. Thus most organizations are always on a lookout for a robust security system which could help them eliminate theft.

Unorganized stocks: Every store has loads of goods which are not displayed and are stacked in the back store. Tracking goods in this unorganized lot when a customer demands for an item not displayed on the shelves is a tedious time consuming task which often leads to loss of sale.

Proposed Solution

Item Tagging

• When new items are received, all details will be entered in to the application software• Item code or unique serial number generated by the software will be encoded into a re-usable RFID tag using a desktop RFID reader/encoder• Encoded tag will be then attached to the item along with the price label

Billing

• A desktop RFID reader connected to the POS system will read multiple items at the same time• This will reduce the time taking for billing drastically• While packing the billed items, RFID tag attached to it will be removed for reusing to other items

Theft Prevention

• RFID Gate reader will be installed at the exit point of the store• This will read all the RFID tags passing through the gate and alarm sound will be produced if any tag is read.

Physical Verification

• A portable hand held RFID reader will be used for reading all items without removing items from the racks where it is displayed• Hand held reader will be moved near the items attached with the RFID tag and the item code of all items will be read and stored in the reader memory• After collecting all data, reader will be connected to the computer and collected data will be transferred to the application software to generate the reports.

Easy Stock verification: RFID technology helps to read all items without touching it from its existing location which reduces the stock verification time drastically. Even a semi skilled person can collect data from a large number of items within a short span of time. This enables to carry out stock taking on more frequent basic thus increasing productivity and helping to make better decisions.
