    RFID

    Page 8

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that uses radio waves totransfer data from an electronic tag, called RFID tag or label, attached to an object, through a reader for the purpose of identifying and tracking the object.

Inventory control is often a costly, time consuming process for retailers. Byoffering real- time inventory visibility, RFID enables inventory managers tomonitor and control inventory supply at all times.

    BARCODE & SCANNING

    Page 9

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows

data about the object to which it attaches.

    Benefits of Barcode

In POS management, barcode systems can provide detailed up-to-dateinformation on the business, accelerating decisions and with more confidence. For example:

Fast-selling items can be identified quickly and automatically reordered.Slow-selling items can be identified, preventing inventory build-up.The effects of merchandising changes can be monitored, allowing fast- moving,

more profitable items to occupy the best space.

A barcode reader (or barcode scanner)

This is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes. Like a flatbed

scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical

impulses into electrical ones. Additionally, nearly all barcode readers contain

decoder circuitry analyzing the barcode's image data provided by the sensor

and sending the barcode's content to the scanner's output port.

This technology also enables the profiling of individual consumers, typicallythrough a voluntary registration of discount cards. While pitched as a benefit

to the consumer, this practice is considered to be potentially dangerous by

    privacy advocates.

    EDI

    Page 11

Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the structured transmission of databetween organizations by electronic means. It is used to transfer electronic

documents or business data from one computer system to another computersystem, i.e. from one trading partner to another trading partner without humanintervention.

    USES:

Electronic trading documents can be delivered far more quickly than theirpaper counterparts, thus the turnaround time from order to delivery can bereduced.Companies receiving advanced Shipping notes or Acknowledgments know inadvance what is actually going to be delivered and are made aware of

shortages so alternate supplies can be sourced.

    Pantaloons experiment with RFID

Pantaloons RFID pilot project is helping the company save time and improve theaccuracy of merchandise movement.

Pantaloon Retail (India) has piloted an RFID project at one its warehouses inTarapur using 1,000 RFID tags. The company is starting from where it mattersthe most by implementing the technology at the warehouse. While a SAP implementation is currently underway, the RFID initiative wasmore to do with improving the efficiency of the entire supply chain, and wewanted to be the first to execute it.

Pantaloon now aims to extend the application to production routing andscheduling, product recall and returns, and real-time data for category managersfor effective forecasting. We expect that the RFID application will further help

us to improve the shopping experience, store layout and any inventory situation.
