Executive Summary - Resume/CV/Biodata Dato’ Eric Goh, Professor of Engineering at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), is the Delegation/ Panel Head of the Engineering Accreditation Council - Board of Engineers Malaysia (EAC-BEM) and has also recently been reelected the Honorary Treasurer for The Institute of Quarrying for Malaysia. He has also successfully completed his term as State/Branch Chairman for The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), USM’s Head of Quality and Accreditation (Engineering), Co-Chairman - ‘Engineering @ USM’ University Commemorative Anniversary Book Project and Panel on the State Review Board. Professor Eric Goh, accredited as a Certified Technical Course Trainer (GMI), obtained his BSc (Hons) and MSc in Engineering from the University of Leeds (UK) and subsequently his PhD from the University of Queensland, Australia. Dato’ Eric Goh, a pro-active ‘Fellow’ of The Institute of Quarrying (UK) and The Institution of Engineers Malaysia; is also certified as an ‘International Professional Engineer’, ‘APEC Engineer’, ‘ASEAN Engineer’ and ‘PEng with PEPC (Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate)’ status. He is a prolific author of over 200 technical publications, which includes 9 reference books and 13 monographs. His other achievements include obtaining a 99.2% assessment grade for teaching from university students and invitations as Keynote, Invited / Panel Speaker, Visiting Professor and Session Chairman to over 200 conferences and seminars worldwide since the 1980s. Some of his recent invitations to various international-level Keynote Speaker/Address sessions include several technical conferences in Australia (Queensland), Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Sydney, Melbourne and Malaysia.

4. ACADEMIC, RESEARCH and INNOVATION EXCELLENCE (Highlights)

Based on various international and national academic accreditation enhancement programmes and applied industry-centred collaborative research and innovation excellence projects carried out over the past 30 years, the principal outcomes are over 200 publications which include 22 engineering reference books and monographs. Outstanding outcomes of each innovation excellence project include:

i) Academic Excellence: Academic Accreditation experience, as Delegation and Panel Accreditation Head, in auditing over 70 international and national university programmes aimed towards the final attainment of world class education excellence. The international review process includes major items such as expectations of global community on effective teaching, curriculum standards, academic, administrative and technical staff competencies, fulfilment on aspirations of university students, quality of university management, organisational occupational safety, effective facilities for the academic environment and sustainable of university programmes. A complementary outcome is the publication of the international academic reference book entitled ‘Engineering @ USM: Celebrating 25 years of Excellence’ [ISBN: 978-983-861-562-4].

ii) Sustainable Development/ Mining and Quarrying Engineering: Being presently the only

senior Malaysian Professor nationwide specialised in sustainable mineral development, the research carried out in the mineral/material sector has been extensive. As Project Coordinator, the sustainable research carried out has helped in the co-formulation of the high-impact ‘Malaysia’s (National) Master Plan for the Minerals Resource Industry’. The international-based research carried out since the 1980s have been under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (Department of Minerals and Geoscience); and the industry. Some of the noteworthy documentation from this distinctive mineral research, design and development project as references for the benefit of the Government agencies and industry are the publication of the following 2 reference books namely ‘Smart Partnerships - Key to Sustainable Mineral Resource Development [ ISBN No.: 983-41266-1-1 ]’ and ‘Sustainable Development of World-class Minerals and Environment’ [ ISBN No.: 978-983-861-410-8 ].

Owing to the importance of the mineral resources industry towards strategic national development, in-depth research has been implemented towards sustainable and innovative technology and practices. Book references from this collaborative quality research and development includes these important international-centred reference books which include ‘World Class Quarrying [ ISBN No.: 978-967-10029-19 ] ‘Quarries and Quarrying - Sustainable Development, Green Technology and Best Practices [ ISBN No.: 987-967-10029-0-2 ]’, ‘Quarry Directory - Malaysia [ ISSN No.: 1823-7029 ] and ‘Quarrying - Essential Element in National Development [ ISBN No.: 983-41266-0-3 ]’. The findings and experience from these research projects are presently being used by the researcher as Project Leader in the co-preparation with the industry of the upcoming proposed ‘Quarry

Rehabilitation Guidelines for Malaysia’.


iii) Environmental Engineering: Some of the outstanding environmental research and

industry-linked project outcomes include the publication of a holistic research reference book entitled ‘Soil Erosion Engineering’ [ISBN: 983-3391-66-4] which received excellent international review. All the initially printed copies were all sold out to the industry and this international academic book has been reprinted. Another successful result of this cluster research is the innovative design of a unique soil erosion economic reliability-based risk assessment model to evaluate the stability of any land development project against soil erosion failures. Several papers have been documented in various international journals and also at conference presentations within Malaysia and worldwide.

Most noteworthy results on the quality of air/dust pollution engineering research and development from this specialisation are the successful design and development of an accurate dust deposition model at industrial sites to reality for efficient management decision-making. Another sector of this research is the modelling of dust control systems with the aim to increase the efficiency of various dust control systems presently used in the industry. The noteworthy products of this research are improved economics via the increase in dust monitoring accuracy and similarly dust control equipment efficiency. Another outcome of this research is the publication of another book entitled ‘Integrated Environmental Concepts’ [ISBN: 978-983-861-399-6] incorporating the research findings.

iv) Geostatistical Evaluation: Based on the widespread geostatistical research carried out in

various countries in the regions; the quality of research has resulted in the publication of a comprehensive book entitled ‘Fundamentals and Applications of Geostatistics [ ISBN No.: 983-861-260-X ]’ which is presently widely being used as an invaluable reference in government agencies, academic institutions, the mineral sector and also other industrial sectors where this innovative statistical technology is practical and applicable. Several monographs were also written based on this unique statistical methodology.
