1. An Dielectric based Approach to Determine the Ripeness of Fruits and Vegetables The main challenge in agricultural farms lies in harvesting the products at
right time so that the loss of over vegetation is minimized. The storage mechanism
also involves certain techniques such that ripening to correct stage can be done to
avoid food waste. It is critical to determine fruit maturity and quality both before and
after packing. However, fruit maturity is hard to determine, especially for fruits with
color unrelated to their level of maturity or ripeness. While the maturity level can be
determined by human experts it is impractical for inspecting large quantities. Hence
an automated rapid, reliable, nondestructive, noninvasive technique to measure the
physical properties of food product is required
2. Development of an Intelligent System to Detect Adulteration and Contamination in Food Products using image processing and LabVIEW
It has been proved that prolonged consumption of adulterated and
contaminated foods leads to common side effects viz., thyroid tumors, asthma,
abdominal pain, eczema, liver and kidney damage, anemia, abortion, cancer, cardiac
arrest, paralysis or even brain damage. In spite of the role of Prevention of Food
Adulteration Act (1954) many foods are adulterated. Even the well informed urban
consumer is not aware about the aspect of adulteration or how to identify them as
these contamination are present in ppm/ppb levels. Finally, consumers are cheated and
always in trauma whether what they eat is free of adulteration or not. Micro and
medium scale vendors purchasing adulterated products are not aware of the problems
VASANTHARATHNA Page 29 of 34
caused by it. This results in delivery of poor quality products to the public. Detection
of adulteration and contamination in food products is an important challenging task
and done by either Manual quality inspection or with a laboratory experimental setup.
This is found to be ineffective as it is laborious and time consuming. More over
expensive and harmful chemicals are used, rendering the sample unusable for testing
resulting in marketing adulterated products in full swing.
3. Design and development of Agricultural Robot for Onion Cultivation The developed robot automates the process of Seed Sowing till
cultivation of onions at right time. The moisture sensor and temperature sensor
takes care of watering and fertilising operations at the right mixtures.
4. FPGA BASED MOTOR CONTROL
The aim of the proposed work is to evaluate and quantify how FPGAs can be
suitable for the implementation of complex ac drive controllers. The proposed
sensorless controller is based on the extended Kalman filter based space vector
modulated direct torque control algorithm.
VASANTHARATHNA Page 30 of 34
5. Estimation of State of Charge (SoC) in Lead Acid Batteries using Extended Kalman Filter This project proposes a method to accomplish the SoC estimation
mechanism based on extended Kalman filtering (EKF), which adapts to the
change in cell characteristics. Therefore it provides accurate estimation over
the lifetime of the pack on a lead-acid battery. The changes in the behavior of
the battery are considered in the proposed SoC estimation method which
makes it suitable for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications.
6. Monitoring and Control of Food Storage Depots using Wireless Sensor Networks The safety of food storage is a significant issue concerning people’s living quality and national economic development. In India, nearly 20% of
food grains are going as waste due to storage losses. The food storage losses
are accounted mainly due to the changing environmental conditions and
improper infrastructure facilities. This paper proposes an integrated system to
monitor and control the environmental factors like temperature, humidity and
light illumination of food depots using wireless sensor networks. The food
products chosen are Grains, Wheat, Rava and Maida flour. The ZigBee mesh
networking technology is used to send the measured parameters from remote
food depots and the LabVIEW software is used to monitor the environmental
factors. The images of the food product are captured from remote end and
checked for the right food product by image analysis. An automated aeration
control strategy is employed to maintain the temperature and moisture content
within the threshold limits for each of the food products, thus ensuring food
security.
VASANTHARATHNA Page 31 of 34
7. Development of Certain Experimental Methods to Analyze and Reduce the Harmonics and Torque Ripple of the Brushless DC Motor Drive Brushless DC Motors (BLDCM) are widely used in automated
industrial applications like Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery,
aerospace applications and in the field of robotics. The dynamics of this motor
should be smooth for many industrial and automated applications and free
from unwanted interference. But due to high speed switching circuits used in
the commutation circuits, the BLDC motor voltage contains harmonics
component and this causes high electromagnetic interference problems.
During commutation, the trapezoidal current passing through each phase,
causes pulsation in torque during its operation. This work proposes an
improved methodology to reduce the high frequency harmonics components
and torque ripples using a RC filter connected at the input of the motor. This
work is simulated using PSIM and the effect of filter is analyzed with FFT
analysis. An experimental setup is developed to analyze the performance of
the drive with the proposed system and the experimental outputs were
compared with the simulated values and the improvement in performance is
analyzed.
8. Thermal and Wind Power Profit Based Unit Commitment Using
Evolutionary Computational Algorithms This research presents an Artificial Immune System approach
for solving generation scheduling problem of a Genco comprised of thermal
and wind energy systems. Wind–thermal scheduling problem determine the
time of instant to start up and shut down the generating units over a scheduled
time period, while satisfying the ‘system’ and ‘generator’ constraints including minimum up/down time; ramp rate limits of thermal units and wind power
constraints. In this work, the impact of wind energy on short term generation
scheduling problem is analyzed through the adaptive search which is inspired
from the Artificial Immune System. The effectiveness of the proposed
approach is demonstrated through a Genco consists of 10 thermal units with 2
wind farms and the results for the near optimal schedule are analysed.
