Results of the 120th Annual Autumn Show and Sale of Highland Cattle in Oban

The 120th Autumn Show and Sale of Highland Cattle was a weekend of mixed emotions. Members experienced excitement at the prospect of newly appointed auctioneers United Auctions selling the cattle on Monday, they celebrated the 120th event in true style with enthusiasm and good ‘craik’ and they raised their glasses with fond memories to absent friends Angus MacColl and Jim McConachie.

The drinks receptions attracted record numbers on Saturday evening and during the dinner and trophy presentation on Sunday evening a shepherds crook made of Highland Horn donated by Archie Cameron was auctioned by Raymond Kennedy and raised £1300 which was donated to the Beatson Cancer Centre along with the proceeds of Lot 5 Una Bhuidhe 10th of Muingairigh who sold to Graeme Keep of the Chedley Fold for 2000 guineas on Monday 9th October.

The winner of the Lottery Draw for £1000 for the financial year 1 September 2016 until 31 August 2017 was Anna Nicholson from Killin.

Overall Championship – Sponsored by The Scottish Farmer Judge Matt Auld of the Pollok Fold found his 120th Autumn Show Overall Champion in Kirsty 11th of Craigowmill from Ken and Eva Brown. Kirsty won the Three Year Old Heifer section winning the Bell Ingram Quaich and then went on to lift the Invernairn Cup. Kirsty 11th of Craigowmill was born on 31 March 2014 and is sired by Fear Siridh of Balmoral and out of Kirsty 8th of Craigowmill. This red three year was in calf to Ruaridh of Ubhaidh who was Overall Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2014, her grand sire on the dam line was Oban Champion in 2005 and her sire Fear Siridh of Balmoral has sired several high priced heifers at Oban. The herd person bringing out the Overall Champion winning the K W Walker Memorial Quaich was Ken Brown’s stockman David Burt. This heifer was sold to the Balnabroich Fold of Michael & Sally Nairn for 3600 guineas.

The Reserve Overall Champion, was awarded to the Best Two Year Old heifer, Sguillin 4th of Mottistone from the home of Michael Poland. Michael and his stockman Willie MacLean lifted the newly donated Dooris Family Rose Bowl for the Reserve Overall Champion and also took home the George Bruce Memorial Trophy. Sguillin 4th of Mottistone was a red heifer, born on 29 January 2015 and sired by the well-known Eoin Mhor 8th of Mottistone who lifted the Supreme Championship at Glasgow International Show in 2012 and the Breed Champion title at the Great Yorkshire in 2012. The newly formed Witches Craig Fold of Veda Dewar and Kenneth Wood topped the sale by purchasing this heifer for 4000 guineas.

Three Year Old Heifer – Sponsored by Barclays The best three year old heifer was the Overall Female Champion Kirsty 11th of Craigowmill from Ken & Eva Brown.

Standing in reserve was Highland Cattle Society Vice President Gordon McConachie from the firm of J & M McConachie & Son with Nessia 4th of Culfoich a red heifer born on 10th June 2014 who was sired by the Oban 2011 Champion Eoin Mhor 3rd of Mottistone and was brought out by Rich Thomson. Nessia was sold in calf to Jacob 2nd of Benmore who stood Champion at Stirling in May 2017 and was purchased by Paul Harris for 2800 guineas for his Harris Fold.

Two Year Old Heifer – Sponsored by Galbraith The Best Two Year Old Heifer was the Reserve Overall Champion Sguillin 4th of Mottistone from Mr Michael Poland.

Standing in reserve in the Two Year Old Section was Hazel 17th of Knockendon from Ronald and Frances Fergie. This red heifer born on 12th April 2015 was sired by the famous James Beusach of An Sidhean and was out of Anna Mhor 20th of Callachally. Hazel 17th of Knockendon makes her way south to her new home in West Sussex with Jane Whitehouse owner of the Janes’ Fold for 1800 guineas.

Yearling Heifer Class – Sponsored by MacPhee & Partners Gordon McConachie lifted his second title of the day in the yearling heifer class with Carlin 4th of Culfoich taking the Best Yearling Heifer title and winning the Braes of Greenock Challenge Bowl. This red yearling born on 20th March 2016 was sired by the same bull as the Reserve Three Year Old Heifer, Jacob 2nd of Benmore who was Stirling Champion in May 2017. Her dam Laria of Culfoich was Junior Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2010 and she heads back to Aberdeenshire to the home of J & L Fraser & Son for 1200 guineas.

The reserve title went to R & S Strachan from the Isle of Mull with Netta Dhubh of Cailaich a black heifer born on 14 May 2016 and brought out by Shirley Strachan. Netta Dhubh of Cailaich was sired by the proven Neili Kirkibost of Ardbhan and out of Netta Ruadh 28th of Cailaich. She heads to Strathpeffer to the home of Andrew MacPhee of the Achterneed Fold for 1200 guineas.

Heifer Calf Class – Sponsored by Tithebarn The Myrecairnie Perpetual Trophy was won by Dexter Logan of Blairlogan Highlanders with Katie Morag 13th of Blairlogan who was ably brought out by Carolyn Ross. This white heifer calf is by Logan of Muingairigh and out of Katie Morag 4th of Blairlogan and sold to a returning member of the Highland Cattle Society Ron Riley of the Bluehouse Fold in Chelmsford, Essex.

Lord Denham of the Dunach Fold stood reserve with Nighean Ruadh 2nd of Dunach a red heifer born on 23 February 2017 brought out by John, Wilma, Ruari, Murn & Kate Cameron. This heifer was by Bentalla of Mottistone and out of Nighean Ruadh of Dunach.

Cow Class – Sponsored by Tithebarn The Thaggnam Cup for the Best Cow was awarded to Emma & Simon Haley of the Seam fold with Diorbhail of West Edmondsley who was bred by L & L Braines and brought out by son Mark Braines. Born on 21 January 2012 this Samson Dubh of Brunnila sired cow out of Diorbhail of Hellifield had been shown successfully and was sold in calf to Callum 15th of Goldenberry for 1500 guineas to Michael and Sally Nairn of Balnabroich.

Donald MacNaughton stood reserve with Malda 4th of Knockendon, a yellow, six year old cow bred by Ronald and Frances Fergie. She was sired by James Beusach of An Sidhean and out of Malda Dubh of Knockendon.

Young Handlers The Oban Times Young Handlers trophy was hotly contested. Twelve Young people were split into two classes, the senior class aged 14 – 18 and the junior class aged 13 and under. The winners of each section went head-to-head for the overall title. Winning the senior section was 16 year old Asha Nelson of the Glengorm Fold and standing top of the junior section was Logan Ross who was assisting Blairlogan Highlanders. Matt Auld crowned Logan Ross as the Overall Young Handler Champion and the prizes were presented by Jeanie MacColl.
