Restoring and Digitizing the Municipal Library of Gjirokaster

The main deliverables of Gjirokastra Municipality as Lp2 during the implementation of the project has been:

WP 6: Renovations and Equipment for Municipal LibraryAction 6.1.1 Library Renovation

WP 5: Digital Content and Library NetworkAction 5.1.1 Digitization of 1000 selected books

Action 5.2.2 Digital Content for Folk Music and Artifacts



The Renovation consisted as follow:

5.2.1 Internal and external Construction works

5.2.2 Roof reconstruction and hydro/insulation works

5.2.3 Sanitation and hydraulic installation works

5.2.4 Electrical Installations

The library situation before reconstruction was contrary to the standards set by Unesco for a

Digitizing the Municipal Library of Gjirokaster

The Municipal Library of Gjirokaster consist of

Over 120.000 titles

Thousands of magazines and newspapers

Until now no digital version of the library content existed in any form

Objective of the Action

Create a digital representation of the content of the Municipal Library of Gjirokaster fully compliant to the Balkaneana and Europeana standards.

In the framework of the project

1.000 books, newspapers, magazines, etc. are digitized

50 hours of video, 50 hours of audio and 500 photos brought to a modern digital form

Methodology of Digitalization

• A lot of sources were gathered

selecting the best available

content.

• Local authorities help was

decisive during all the content

selection procedure, from the

contacts with local studios and

photographers till the detailing

of the records related with the

content.

REGION, which is not just a

study but the best expertise

ever about the essence of the

folk in our specific South region

of Albania.

Photos

• The basic sources about the

photos are from:

• local photographers

• Institute of Culture Albums &

• Internet.

• All photos are in high quality

jpeg format.

Photos Content

• The majority of photos are

from the Folk Festivals of

Gjirokastra &

from folk costumes of the

South Albania.

• There is a great number of

gathered photos that couldn’t

be included because of the low

resolution

Audio

• Audio has a good quality with

small exceptions of old songs,

where the audio processing

target is to maintain their

originality

• Songs are archived in high

quality mp3 files

• Most of local videos are

converted from DVD format, in

separated titles.

• An important resource remains

internet, especially high quality

videos from YouTube.

• There were not so much things

to do with the quality of some

important old videos.

The choice was made based on the (restricted) budget and the nature of the artifacts
