Depth of cure in bulk fill composites describes the extent to which the material fully polymerizes, which is the key factor in effective bulk fill composites. A bulk fill restoration is only as effective as its depth of cure.

Finished and Polished Restoration

Polymerization is critical to successful bulk fill restorations, which is achieved by absorbing light via light transmission. For long-term durability and strength, it is vital that the material’s monomers convert to polymers (degree of conversion) during the polymerization process, which directly impacts the physical and mechanical properties of the composite. Through light transmission, with a high degree of conversion, a substantial depth of cure and superior physical properties will occur.
