Best Of:

DiningCraving coconut water? Want to watch people? Need a midnight slice? Flip through to find your fix… then go!

Best Breakfast

Pines takes the prize this year for Best Place to Grab Breakfast. Hot, made to order, and early!

Morning Buzz

There are days where coffee defines you—so why not drink the best? Roger’s Market is well known throughout campus for serving up a hot and fast assortment of Specialty Espresso Drinks. Fair Trade Certified and fully caffeinated.

“Coffee doesn’t ask silly questions.

Coffee understands.”

New this Year!

Roots will be open for breakfast! Start your day right with yummy vegan breakfast items like Apple Almond Dippers or a Vegan Omelet Cup. Check out the menu @ hdh.ucsd.edu.

Eat Clean

Prefer to eat plants? Eat at Roots, which the students voted Best Healthy Dining option.

“Learn how to cook, but also don't be afraid

to branch out and try all the dining restaurants!”

8 9Triton Tips Fall 2018

Mix It Up

We asked students where to find the best variety of options for lunch… and the winners are:

01. The Bistro02. 64 Degrees03. Pines

All the Fixin’s

OceanView and Pines tied for Best Salad Bar! Yet they are so different—Pines is self-serve and sold by the ounce, while at OV you pick from halal certified proteins, and have your salad chopped and spun for you.

To Dine…or to Fine Dine?

Treat yourselves and others to a meal at Fine Dining winner The Bistro, with its palate-pleasing Asian Fusion menu and sushi bar!

Midnight Dining

Early to bed and early to rise makes a student miss out on the nightlife. Head to OceanView, serving food ‘til 2am and voted Best Late-Night Dining.

Save Room for Dessert

Say “pretty please” and get your sugar—the OceanView sweet station rules, with Pines a close second, so say students who voted it Best Desserts.

Quickest Grab ‘n’ Go

Oh, you’re sooo busy. That’s cool. Check out Goody’s Market. Your amigos say it has the Best and fastest Grab ’n’ Go selection.

Favorite Dining Services Activity

Yay, there’s more to do at Dining than just eat! Favorites include the annual Harvest Fest at Pines, Pre-Finals brunches at the end of every quarter, and Cooking Demos at 64 Degrees all year.

“Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.”

THE HUNGER SCALE

Yes, for the past hour or so.

Yes! It’s sudden and immediate.

Any variety of foods.

I have to have one kind of food.

I have hunger pangs and rumblings.

No hunger pangs, but I feel

like eating.

No. I haven’t eaten in hours and I need food for energy.

I am bored and need to snack on something.

Ah, I feel satisfied. My stomach rumblings

have stopped.

I don’t really notice the fullness

until I’m done eating. Now I have overstuffed myself.

No way. I need food to survive.

I feel worthless and gross.

I might skip a meal or exercise more.

If you fall to the right side with your answers, you are emotionally eating. It’s ok! Now you are more aware.

Best ResLife Activities

New experiences and making friends—that’s what college is really all about! The ResLife offices hold tons of activities throughout the year, starting with the UnOlympics in Week Zero. Other faves include Village After Dark, open mic events, carnivals and festivals, movie nights, and any event with FREE FOOD! So get out there, mingle and EAT!

“Time goes by so fast so enjoy it and do as many fun things as possible! Don't be afraid

to explore things you wouldn't normally do.”

Friendliest Staff

Residents ADORE their custodial staff. These nice folks are in and out of your rooms to clean up, and what’s not to like about that? You’ll be seeing them so often that by the end of the year they’ll feel like family.

Study Where You Sleep

Students had a variety of opinions on the best place to snooze—grab a blanket and head to any grassy spot, or hit up the hammocks by the upper apartments in TMC. Students like almost every level of Geisel library, too.

“My nap is a magical place when I suddenly remember everything I was supposed to do.”

Best Beach

There are lots of options. It IS San Diego, after all! Ok, so Black’s Beach is the closest, but La Jolla Shores & La Jolla Cove are the prettiest (just hop on the 30 bus). Windansea is the best surf spot and Del Mar is amazing, but each requires transportation. Let’s face it, you can’t go wrong if you find yourself at ANY beach in the area!

“La Jolla beach is just down the street and always clean. Also, the sunset is always very beautiful.”

Best Place for a Date

If you’re going to stay on campus for a date, residents agree that The Bistro is the place to go—the food and ambiance are great, you don’t have to tip, and you can use your Dining Dollars! Check out the sunset after dinner (see: Best View), then grab a sweet treat at “Best Dessert” winner OceanView. See where the evening takes you!

“The Bistro is the famous date spot. It's yummy and a perfect place to have a

conversation… and you can use Dining Dollars!”

Best Campus Event

Fun is where you make it happen. There are a LOT of incredible events all year long at UCSD! Keep your eyes and ears open for the Weekly Farmer’s Market, Hullaballoo, Bear Garden, SUN GOD!!!, Muir Fest, the Sixth Chocolate Festival, and soooo much more!

“Sun God! It was so much fun! Acts were great, students had fun, super chill! 10/10 recommend!”

Easiest Parking 🤷

Comments range from “the 20-minute loading zone” to “this is a joke, right?!” Check out our alternative transportation webpage at: hdh.ucsd.edu/gettingaround.html

Get a Job!

The majority of students say the best place to get a job is with Dining Services—either in a restaurant or market. It’s flexible, pays some bills, and you get a free meal when you work! You can also work in a lab, the bookstore, at RIMAC... Check UCSD’s Handshake website or visit: tinyurl.com/hdhemploy

People Meeting

Put your electronics down and look around, and we guarantee meeting people won't be a problem. Students report that UCSD students are "so friendly it's scary"! So go anywhere—class, Price Center, the gym—and say hi. You'll make BFFs 4 life.

“Sometimes your best pal will come from unexpected places! Introduce yourself,

make conversation, if you click that's great and if not that's okay too, the campus is huge and there are so many amazing people here!”

“I would definitely love to work at John's Market.

It's always playing cool music and just seems

like a laid back job.”

Don't take yourself too seriously. You're

going to learn and change so much

throughout your time at UC San Diego.

You don't need to have everything

figured out yet. Go with the flow, explore

things you enjoy, work hard and reach

out for help and support when you need

it (whatever that means for you). This

campus has a lot to offer and so does this

city. Don't limit yourself to just your

major or your college.

Good luck, work hard, and stay calm—

it's all going to work out.
