REST FOR THE WEARY

Page 2: Rest for the Weary

Like food, rest is a gift that

comes from God alone.

Page 3: Rest for the Weary

So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man…

Genesis 2:21a

Page 4: Rest for the Weary

For the Christian,

sleep is an act of worship.

Page 5: Rest for the Weary

In peace, i will both lie down and sleep,

for You alone, o Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Page 6: Rest for the Weary

When you lay down to sleep,

it is an act of surrender to God.

Page 7: Rest for the Weary

You are consciously choosing

unconsciousness. You are trusting in

something.

Page 8: Rest for the Weary

Sleep is a good opportunity to

entrust God with the care of your

entire self.

Page 9: Rest for the Weary

Sleep is death practice.

Page 10: Rest for the Weary

Sleep in moderation is

necessary and healthy.

Page 11: Rest for the Weary

Sweet is the sleep of a laborer.

Ecclesiastes 5:12

Page 12: Rest for the Weary

As Christ-following men & women,

we should work hard and sleep well,

thanking God in both.

Page 13: Rest for the Weary

But sleep can not only be an act of

worship, it can also be an act of

idolatry.

Page 14: Rest for the Weary

How long will you lie there, o sluggard?

When will you arise from your sleep?

Proverbs 6:9

Page 15: Rest for the Weary

Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep,

and an idle person will suffer hunger.

Proverbs 19:15

Page 16: Rest for the Weary

Sleeping more than necessary is not

of Christ.

Page 17: Rest for the Weary

Desiring sleep in over-abundance is

sinful: it is making a good thing

a great thing…and that’s a bad thing.

Page 18: Rest for the Weary

How much sleep does your body

genuinely need?

Page 19: Rest for the Weary

Sleep can also distract us from

mission.

Page 20: Rest for the Weary

So then, let us not sleep as others do, but let

us keep awake and be sober.

1 Thessalonians 5:6

Page 21: Rest for the Weary

We should be ready

for Christ’s return.

Page 22: Rest for the Weary

We should sleep healthily, to be

prepared for the work commended to

us that day.

Page 23: Rest for the Weary

Let us not waste our lives sleeping.

Page 24: Rest for the Weary

But sleep is not the

only type of rest.

Page 25: Rest for the Weary

And on the seventh day God finished His work

that He had done and He rested on the

seventh day from all His work that He had

done.

Genesis 2:2-3

Page 26: Rest for the Weary

Was He commanding us to

rest on Sundays?

Page 27: Rest for the Weary

Or is there something else?

Page 28: Rest for the Weary

leviticus 23

page 87

Page 29: Rest for the Weary

Six days we shall work.

Page 30: Rest for the Weary

The seventh day is to be one of

“solemn rest”, a “holy convocation”.

Page 31: Rest for the Weary

Solemn rest is

repose done “gravely or soberly”

Page 32: Rest for the Weary

Once a week, we should have

planned time to rest and enjoy

the work of God on our behalf.

Page 33: Rest for the Weary

Holy convocation is

a group of people assembled to

reflect on who God is and

what He has done

Page 34: Rest for the Weary

The people, on the Sabbath, would

come together to rest, with full

awareness of why, and then would

disperse to their homes to enjoy the

day.

Page 35: Rest for the Weary

We shouldn’t make the Sabbath

more than it is, but we should also

enjoy and honor what it is.

Page 36: Rest for the Weary

Do we as a people actively and

seriously enjoy the rest that we have

in Christ with one another?

Page 37: Rest for the Weary

Another underlying reason for

Sabbath: it is an acknowledgement

that the world continues spinning

without our constant involvement.

Page 38: Rest for the Weary

The Sabbath, like sleep, is an act of

worship, particularly in response to

God’s sovereignty, acknowledging

that Christ alone is in control

…not us.

Page 39: Rest for the Weary

Sabbaths should not be only a once-

a-week occurrence. To remain

worshipful, and healthy, regular

sabbaths of extended lengths

are in order.

Page 40: Rest for the Weary

We call them vacations.

Page 41: Rest for the Weary

The key to a worshipful vacation is to

acknowledge that your joy comes

from the rest provided by God.

Page 42: Rest for the Weary

Again, our joy and His glory coexist.

They are not at odds with one

another.

Page 43: Rest for the Weary

Chapter 23 is not the only time

Sabbath is mentioned in Leviticus.

Page 44: Rest for the Weary

Leviticus 16:1-34

page 82

Page 45: Rest for the Weary

The ceremony of Atonement was one

of salvation…and rest.

Page 46: Rest for the Weary

We should “afflict” ourselves?

Page 47: Rest for the Weary

Defeat yourself.

Humble yourself.

You are not in control

of your fate.

Page 48: Rest for the Weary

Rather, you are subservient to a God

who is just, merciful, loving, and

gracious to His people.

Page 49: Rest for the Weary

That’s a reason to relax.

Page 50: Rest for the Weary

We should keep that statute forever.

Page 51: Rest for the Weary

The point of it all.

Page 52: Rest for the Weary

Jesus slept.

Page 53: Rest for the Weary

And behold, there arose a great storm on the

sea, so that the boat was being swamped by

the waves; but he was asleep.

Matthew 8:24

Page 54: Rest for the Weary

Jesus was weary.

Like you & i, Jesus’ body became

tired. God identifies with us, because

He became one of us.

Page 55: Rest for the Weary

Another man in Scripture slept.

Page 56: Rest for the Weary

Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried

out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that

was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for

them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner

part of the ship and had lain down and was

fast asleep.

Jonah 1:5

Page 57: Rest for the Weary

Jonah was not fatigued,

but complacent.

Page 58: Rest for the Weary

What happens?

Page 59: Rest for the Weary

An outsider’s voice awakens Jonah,

sparing him from certain doom.

Page 60: Rest for the Weary

Christian, this is what happened

in your heart!

Page 61: Rest for the Weary

The voice of the Outsider has called

to your heart, waking you from your

nap of complacence, that you may be

saved from death.

Page 62: Rest for the Weary

Sleep points to your salvation, and

ultimately to Christ.

Page 63: Rest for the Weary

Awake, O sleeper,

and arise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.

Ephesians 5:14

Page 64: Rest for the Weary

But unlike the Jonah story, you are

not the sacrifice required.

Page 65: Rest for the Weary

But when Christ had offered for all time a

single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the

right hand of God.

Hebrews 10:12

Page 66: Rest for the Weary

The Death of Jesus is the reality that

the Day of Atonement points to.

Page 67: Rest for the Weary

The Cross is our reason for Eternal

Sabbath.

Page 68: Rest for the Weary

But it is precisely because we can

rest in His work that we can stop

sleeping awake.

Page 69: Rest for the Weary

Besides this you know the time, that the hour

has come for you to wake from sleep. For

salvation is nearer to us now than when we

first believed.

Romans 13:11

Page 70: Rest for the Weary

reflect

1. are you active in your sleep

patterns?

2. do you take vacations, or just time off

from work?

3. do you see the reality behind rest?
