July 2016 – No. 10
FROM MR. SYMONDS News from OFSTED!! I’m delighted to be able to inform parents that following a visit by two of her Majesty’s inspectors to our school two weeks ago, we have been judged to be making good progress against the issues raised at the December 2015 inspection. The report will be available for all parents to read on the OFSTED website in the next five working days, but we have been very pleased with the judgements arrived at by the inspection team. Most importantly, given that this was judged a problem at our previous inspection, safeguarding has been judged as effective. Leaders are praised for their diligence in addressing perceived weaknesses, children were judged to be well-behaved and courteous, and the achievements and outcomes of our children are also heading in the right direction. I’m delighted that this happened, although the inspection team visited the school at a particularly busy time of the year all members of staff showed the team what our school is really like. To that end I convey my thanks, gratitude and admiration to everyone who supported the school during these two very important days. It means that we can finish the year on a positive and encouraging note. The pace of life at our school continues to be relentless. I hope that all parents and carers enjoyed reading the reports on the children’s achievements this year, which you should receive today. I cannot thank staff enough for the efforts they go to, to try to make sure the fullest picture possible is painted of their children and how they have achieved at our school. This year has been very different for us all, insofar as curriculum changes have meant that we have to report to you in a very different way. We no longer have levels, instead we have to tell you whether your child is below the level expected, at the level expected or is exceeding the level expected for children of their age. There is no doubt about it, that national tests for children in year two and year six have been considerably harder this year. This is evidenced by the national picture, where in order to compete with schools and educational systems judged more effective than ours, the bar has been raised significantly. Most primary school in England and Wales have had very different results to those enjoyed previously. Only time will tell as to whether this is the right move or not, but the outgoing Secretary of State has described this year’s results as “year Zero.” I hope for the sake of our children, that in future years the way we assess children and report back to you as parents is judged by all stakeholders as effective and relevant. It also goes without saying that the school gives thanks to all parents and carers who support their children’s learning by working so hard with them at home and in support of the school’s ambitions for all learners. Thank you so much.
WEST
KIDLINGTON
NEWS
Sports day I’m so sorry about sports day. You will recall that the original sports day was cancelled because of bad weather and we have had to modify sports day this week because of the threat of high temperatures. We were particularly concerned about our younger children who were scheduled to have the sports day on the afternoon of the day we knew was going to be very hot. Thank you to everybody for your patience and understanding; we don’t take these decisions lightly, but trust you understand our concerns. And finally..... I have written a separate letter to everybody who has anything to do with our school which I hope reflects my feelings as I come to the end of my time with you all as Headteacher. I suspect that no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to fully convey to you all the extent of my gratitude and thanks for your support of me and the school for the last 14 and a half years. It goes without saying that I will miss this place which has a very special place in my heart. I am going to be a teacher again at a Special School just outside Oxford. I have always been interested in this sphere and am looking forward to new challenges. Thank you to parents and children who have taken the time to write cards or letters, send gifts or simply pass on their best wishes to me. These may be very small actions, but believe me, they mean so very much to me. I would therefore like to thank the following (and their families!) for making my job the best in the world as I move on to pastures new.

STAFF NEWS It is with great sadness we announce the departure from our school of Mrs Sarah Taylor and Mrs Sara Marah. They have both worked at West Kidlington for over 20 years each, indeed both started their careers at about the same time. We will miss their cheery smiles and happy demeanour. We wish them both the best of luck as they move to pastures new. Good luck! We will miss you both.
Nursery We have had a few different experiences over the last week. SKIPs bought in the chicks to show us and we all enjoyed watching them and stroking them; then somehow we ended up talking about guinea pigs and dogs. So Jo bought in her guinea pigs, Poppy and Rosie, for us to look at, we asked Jo lots of questions about them. Poppy kept hiding under newspaper! The children met their new teachers and told us all about what they had been doing in their new class rooms. Mr. Symonds came to join us for a picnic snack and we sang him a few songs. At forest school Jo bought in her dog. We all went out to forest school on Tuesday. We have had a busy year and have enjoyed teaching your children and working with you in supporting their learning. We hope you all have a lovely summer. Miss Bhomra and Mrs Faulkes
Foundation
The children have all enjoyed spending time with their new teachers. This week we have been reading books and we hope the children continue to enjoy reading over the summer holidays. Jo Simpson and Caroline Wright Year 1 We have been busy writing about what we did at the weekend in Literacy and investigating numbers in Maths, locating them on a 100 square and identifying patterns. In PE we have been continuing to practice lots of different sport activities ready for our sports day and playing a variety of games that build on team work. During Forest School we explored the ground for habitats and created bug homes, this was a lot of fun! We all enjoyed our visit to Year 2 and are looking forward to September.

ATTENDANCE The attendance for the whole school this week is 96.64% BEST COLLEGE ATTENDANCE
MAPLE = 97.47% WILLOW = 97.22% BEECH = 95.79% OAK = 95.05%
Year 2 What a busy year we have had! When looking back over this year, I am amazed at what we have
achieved!
This week has seen Year 2 produce some amazing work for the Flower Festival at St Mary’s
church. There were cheerful pom-pom ‘Bog Babies’ and some super writing, plus the marvellous
zoo creatures that the children did as their home learning, housed in their own enclosure. It really
did look lovely in the church and we felt very proud of our children’s efforts!
As this academic year draws to a close, the Year 2 team would like to take this opportunity to
thank the boys and girls for their enthusiasm and engagement in their learning, as well as their
parents and carers, for all their involvement and support of the learning of their children. We have
really enjoyed teaching you, Year 2!
Ms. Butt, Ms. Gregory, Mrs Nowell and Mrs Marah Year 3 Year 3 had lots of fun with their new teachers as part of transfer day. They represented their colleges and year group with all of the values of West Kidlington at sports day today. We have had lots of fun with them over the course of this year and wish them well in year 4. Mrs Dudgeon, Mrs Lees, Mrs Cape, Mrs Martin Year 4 In Year 4 we have been discussing what would help the Year 3s as they move to their new classes in September. Lots of things are the same but lots of things are different! They have been creating booklets to help the Year 3s with their transition.
We have also been doing research into different countries in Europe, finding out fab facts and presenting them to the class. It's been a busy week but a fun one - have a brilliant, restful summer holidays, everyone!
Miss Ellis, Mrs Cape, Mrs Whale and Mrs Cole
Year 5
We would just like to wish Year 5 a happy summer! They have really been fantastic this year and have made us extremely proud. We are really looking forward to what they will bring to the school as Year 6’s. Well done Year 5 – enjoy your well earned break! Mrs Orton, Mr. Earl and Mrs Symonds
Year 6 Our final full week in year 6 was exceptionally busy! We hope everybody enjoyed our performance of ‘Wind in the Willows’ on Thursday – I know that the children enjoyed performing to you. Last night, we all enjoyed the leavers’ disco and today we have enjoyed the final sports day at West Kidlington. Thank you for all of your support over the year – we wish all of the children the best of luck at secondary school next year. Miss Jones and Mrs Lampshire

From the School Council:
We would like to wish you a happy summer. Please stay healthy and safe. Over the summer, make sure Values are embedded in your hearts as Values are for life, not just for school. Please always be polite. We would also like to wish Year 6 all the best. We will be your school councillors until October half term when there will be elections to give you the opportunity to be a school councillor. We look forward to seeing you in September when we hope you will all have a good time with your new classes.
From the Learning Council:
Remember that learning is not just for in school – it’s for out of school too! 65% of learning takes place at home (not everyone knows this – you just learnt something new!). Do loads of reading and practise your times tables. If you are going abroad, learn some new words in their language and share them when you get back.
Happy summer everyone.
News from the Library
It has been a very busy time in the West Kidlington Library! However, we finish this
academic year with a wonderful new resource, with super new books and an
enthusiastic school of reading children!
The project has taken quite a while and as part of the process we have cleared a large
amount of old books from the shelves, replaced old furniture with new, colourful
shelving and ordered some super new books to enthuse our children around reading.
Many people have been involved in helping this Library to take shape and now I feel
some ‘thank you’s are in order!
A thank you to the staff who have helped remove many old books from the shelves in
their spare time, The WK Friends who have helped fundraise to make this an inspiring
place to be, Mrs Werlingher our School Librarian who has removed countless books
from the Library system and Mrs Kinch, our Bursar, who has been a calm and positive
presence at the various meetings we have attended to get the Library to its completion!
Finally, Michelle Fitzgerald from the WK Friends deserves an extra special mention.
She has been focused on the Library being completed by the end of this academic year
and has worked tirelessly on so many parts of the process, so that we could be at this
point today.
Finally, I would like to remind the whole school community that this library is our
library and we need to make use of it and cherish it so that many of us can continue to
enjoy it for years to come!
Ms Butt
Congratulations to: Alisa Naumenko for her dedication and determination in competing and grading in gymnastics.
Well Done!
Congratulations to: Ellia Tanney for completing Race for Life and raising £100 for cancer research. We are all very proud of her.
Well Done!
Congratulations to: Oliver Kinch, a Year 6 student, for getting his certificate in Spanish after successfully completing his book level 2 in Spanish. Well done!
Dear Parents - don’t miss out the opportunity for your child to learn a new language, French and
Spanish, from September 2016.
Ours classes provide a fun and happy way for children to gain a language skill as well as an
enthusiasm for French and Spanish language and culture. We use songs, games, role-play and
lovely materials to make learning fun. Children have their own book and CD so they can practice
at home too.

CHANGE TO COST OF SCHOOL MEALS
From September, the cost of a school meal will increase from £2.00 to £2.10.
New Governors Needed
We will be advertising for new governors in the near future. This is an important position, as by law schools must have a Governing Body. When Ofsted call, our governance of the school is part of the inspection process. But before you think that’s not for me, read the account below of one governor’s view.
I was elected as a parent governor almost 18 months ago now…how time flies! It’s been a learning curve having never held such a post. I was very excited at the thought of being a governor and it wasn’t until I was ‘inducted’ that I realised the impact that the Governing body has on a school. The Governing body is key in supporting and challenging the school, being a critical friend and shaping the direction of the school. We monitor school policies to ensure that they up to date and relevant and evaluate the impact that they are having on our children. The Governing Body has committees. At our school we have ‘Finance & Resources’ and ‘Performance and Standards’ committees. They both focus on their respective areas, so depending on your passion or professional expertise you can sit on either committee. I am still learning and that is the beauty of the role. I know that the decisions that we make collectively have an impact on the children. These decisions ensure that the children have an enjoyable and enriching experience at school and that is what matters. I would highly recommend being a governor!
When we start advertising please think carefully as to whether you feel you could help the school by bringing your particular talents to the governing body. By that I don’t mean you have to have professional qualifications, just an interest in your children’s education.
If you would like more information about the role of a school governor please contact me at [email protected] and make sure you have a look at our website page http://www.west-kidlington.oxon.sch.uk/our-school/governing-body.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Alison Cook
Clerk to the Governors of West Kidlington
