What is Historical Fiction?

Historical fiction features stories set anywhere from Biblical Times to the mid and later 20th century. Defined by The Historical Novel Society as having been: "...written at least fifty years after the events described, or … by someone who was not alive at the time of those events..."*, the genre is rich with variety, including such sub-genres as time-travel, reincarnation, mys-tery, and fantasy as well as bio-graphical, and alternate history fiction. It entertains and educates, taking its readers into the past to experience life in a different time. Many fans of the genre say they hated history in school, but came to love it through reading works of historical fiction.
