T. Brent Hoehns, M.D is a Board Certified Family
Physician and offers a full spectrum of family care
including Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Adult medicine in
Gowrie and Lake City. Dr. Hoehns earned his
medical degree from the University of Iowa where he
graduated as a member of Alpha Mega Alpha, a
medical honor society.
Dr. T. Brent Hoehns
Dr. Hornback is a Board Certified Family Physician
and offers in Obstetrics. Dr. Hornback began her
medical career working as a Certified Medical Assistant
and then as a Registered Nurse. She attended
Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center
receiving her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
degree.

Labor and Delivery
Moms delivering at Stewart Memorial in Lake
City are pampered with personalized
attention in our modern and beautiful labor and
delivery suites. The suites are equipped with:

The Obstetrics department re-assures that your stay
at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital is safe
and sound. After birth your baby will have a strap
attached to it’s ankle which is linked to a high-tech
security station notifying nurses if abduction occurs.
When to come to the hospital
Your physician would like you to come to the
hospital once you have experienced the follow-
ing:
•
Baby Building Basics - Nutrition Choose food from all the food groups everyday:
*Fruits
*Vegetables
*Protein foods
*Whole grains
*Milk, yogurt, & cheese
*Healthy fats in moderation
• Focus on fiber, aiming for 20 to 35 grams a day.
• Ask your doctor to suggest a daily prenatal
multivitamin.
• Consider calcium supplements if you can’t make
the quota of at least 1000 mg per day (about 3
glasses of milk).
• Drink at least 64 ounces of fluid daily, more if
you’re active and during hot weather.
• Aim for a 25 to 35 pound weight gain, as long as
you began pregnancy at a normal weight. Under-
weight women may be advised to put on even
more; overweight women could be counseled to put
on less. Women expecting multiples will require
gaining more weight. Never diet during pregnancy.

• Add 300 calories a day to your diet, beginning in the
second trimester.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Never eat raw or undercooked animal foods such as
meat, sushi, seafood or eggs.
• Avoid feta, Brie, Camembert and blue-veined, queso
fresco, queso blanco, and Panela cheeses.
They are safe to eat if they are labeled pasteurized. Super Snacks:
• Quesadilla with fresh tomato salsa
• Peanut butter, honey and banana sandwich
• Oatmeal
• Cottage cheese or yogurt with fresh fruit.
• Cereal with fruit. Why wait for breakfast?
• 1 medium sweet potato, sliced into strips and baked
until crispy
• Glass of chilled vanilla soymilk.
• Microwave popcorn, mini bag. Look for low fat
varieties.
• Cantaloupe cubes, drizzled with lime juice.
• ½ cup cooked brown rice, mixed with 3 Tbsp. cooked
black beans, seasoned with cumin, salt and pepper.
• 1 cup tomato soup made with lowfat milk and water.
• ½ cup cold chili with 10 baked tortilla chips.
