Resource Play Overview Studies
Resource Plays Spell Opportunity
Spurred by new technologies and propelled by a modern day land
rush, Resource Plays are rapidly transforming the face of Western
Canada’s oil and gas industry. Canadian Discovery’s Resource
Play Overview Studies are designed to keep you up-to-date and
technically informed on the evolution of major resource plays across
Western Canada. We have completed six overview studies including
the Cardium, Viking, Lower Shaunavon, Pekisko, Exshaw ‘Alberta
Bakken’ and Torquay Resource Plays.

Activity Overview – Flags and provides relevant,
illustrated commentary for significant production, land
sale activity, notable wells, acquisitions and divestitures
Statistics/Tables/Graphs – Compare and rank resource play
performance. Relative statistics (detailed analysis for feature
plays) to include:
Drilling Statistics: Number of wells, depth, length
Production: Total and average IP, present production (PP)
 Reserves / Resources: Hydrocarbons-in-place
 Play Metrics: Cost
 Extent of Current Drilling
Play-by-Play Comparative Review Map
Canadian Discovery has identified 36 resource plays to date:
17 oil resource plays (including Lower Shaunavon, Cardium,
Torquay/Sanish, Bakken, Viking, Birdbear, Spearfish/Amaranth)
and 19 gas resource plays (including Muskwa [Horn
River], Montney, Spirit River/Notikewin, Wilrich, Duvernay,
Glauconitic, Bluesky/Gething/Cadomin, Rock Creek, Doig,
Nordegg, Nikanassin).
The Play-by-Play Comparative Review Map provides research
intelligence and comparative metrics for all 36 identified
resource plays across Western Canada, including:
Map-Based Play Delineation – Map drilling activity, and the
extent and evolution of individual resource plays
What are the Resource Play Overview StudiesFor each overview study, our geosciences team delves into
the geotechnical nuances and metrics that drive that play’s
success. While each overview study is unique—as influenced
by play maturity, extent of play being reviewed and availability
of results—areas of investigation include:
1. Geology and Geophysics – Maps, cross-sections,
annotated logs, graphs, illustrations and a written report:
 Geological setting
 Stratigraphic / Reservoir model
 Play boundaries
 Geophysics where applicable
 Reserves / Resource evaluation
2. Production History, Operators, Land and Trends –
Graphs, tables, statistics, illustrations and a written report:
 Production history and trends
 Operator success and comparisons
 Land ownership and price trends
 Acquisition chronology and metrics

3. Completions / Frac Review – Where possible, a
completions / frac report will accompany each feature play,
including:
Drilling costs: drilling, completion, abandonment, fracs
 Frac type and size
 Fluid and proppant
 Contractor information
 Breakdown pressures
 Stress data
 Isolation technology
Our six overview studies completed to-date:
Cardium – Garrington / Pembina / Pine Creek
 Viking – Redwater / Dodsland
Lower Shaunavon – Leitchville / Dollard / Rapdan
Pekisko – Princess / Judy Creek
Exshaw “Alberta Bakken” Southern Alberta /
Peace River / NE British Columbia
Torquay – SE Sask. / SW Man. (Daly / Sinclair)
