RESOURCEGUIDE
Marc Rosetto
HOPE Sheds Light was started after Ron Rosetto lost his son, Marc A.
Rosetto, 32, to a hard-fought battle against substance abuse and heroin
experimentation on November 21, 2012. When the Rosetto Family was
going through this very difficult time, they struggled to find the help they
so desperately needed. Since the family and friends of those with addiction
problems often feel isolated, ashamed, overwhelmed and hopeless, Ron,
alongside friends Stephen Willis and Arvo Prima, whose sons also were
battling addiction at the time, founded HOPE Sheds Light. Shortly after,
Stephen’s son, Mark Kyle Willis, 31, lost his battle with the disease of
addiction on September 15, 2013. A few years later, Arvo’s son, Paavo Jaan
Prima, 25, lost his fight with the disease on April 5, 2017.
Ron, Stephen and Arvo have since dedicated their lives to keeping their
sons’ legacies alive by helping others find the courage to face addiction and
find recovery so that other people’s sons and daughters might live. HOPE
Sheds Light believes there are many paths to recovery, but to be successful,
one must have to want change and believe that change is possible.
HOPE exists, as families in recovery, to share hope and joy with others. “We
have to draw strength from the wisdom of our peers because when we do it,
we start getting better,” Willis says. “We must believe that there is a better
life beyond the confines of our own limited thinking and that’s what HOPE
Sheds Light is. That’s what we offer. It’s a wonderful combination of faith,
hope and love grounded in wisdom, strength and experience. Why do we do
it? Because our sons want us to. Because by helping you get well, we elevate
the lives of our blessed boys.”
OUR MISSION
OUR STORY
OUR VISION
The mission of HOPE Sheds Light is to raise
awareness and educate individuals, families
and the community about the impact of
addiction by having the courage to share
personal experiences and offer strength,
wisdom, hope and resources that lead to
positive community change and long-term
recovery.
HOPE Sheds Light will lead a transformative
movement that removes the fear and stigma
surrounding the disease of addiction through
a loving, recovery-driven, safe, trusting and
hopeful environment that brings wellness to
the community and allows families to have
the courage to heal and recover.

Find HOPE. Shed LIGHT.
Welcome to the 5th Annual Celebration of HOPE Walk.
Whether you are here on your own, as a member of a team and/or one of our many sponsors, we are
so grateful you have joined us today. As John Wooden said, “The most important thing in the world
is family and love” and today we are one family joined together in love to share our stories, share our
strength and shed the light of HOPE. Recovery is real and possible and we celebrate that today.
I am incredibly honored to serve as the CEO of HOPE Sheds Light. It is a role that carries with it the
opportunity to connect with so many families across the state of New Jersey and beyond. We know that
for every individual who is impacted by the disease of addiction, there is a family impacted as well.
HOPE Sheds Light wants you to know that we are here to help you on your journey with this disease.
Our founders, Ron Rosetto, Steve Willis and Arvo Prima know all too well the havoc and ultimate toll
addiction has on a family. However, it is the ultimate impact that HOPE has on a family that our founders
wish to share with you. In opening HOPE Sheds Light, their goal and true purpose is to guide all families
to the Light of HOPE. Their recovery is real and yours can be too.
Today we stand in solidarity. May our voices travel far and wide and our hearts fill with serenity while we
walk hand in hand on this beautiful and gifted day!
I look forward to working hard to bring New Jersey families the support they need and the services they
seek with equity and kindness.
Sincerely,
Pam Capaci

A Note about the Guide
At the heart of HOPE Shed Light’s (HSL) mission is the desire to connect with other families who have questions about, have concerns with or who may just want to gain a deeper understanding about substance use or addiction/substance use disorder. HSL is a peer driven organization meaning we all have a personal connection to addiction and recovery. We developed this guide to be user friendly and to serve as a tool for other families like ours who didn’t know where to begin or how to access help when we needed it the most. Most importantly, we created this guide in order to Shed Light on the HOPE that can be lost for many families. HOPE that support is close by, that you are not alone and that Recovery happens.
Whether you are a family member of a loved one who is not yet in recovery, an individual seeking support, a member of a family celebrating recovery, a family member who lost a loved one to the disease of addiction or a friend or ally of recovery, this guide is meant for you.
Please remember, if at any point you feel as though you need immediate assistance, we encourage you to reach out to our helpline at 855.350.2790 for additional support.
Getting Started
There is nothing easy about finding help. Unfortunately, the system and the process is not very straightforward. There are various types and levels of care and knowing which approach and/or level of care can be tricky. In addition, navigating the many insurance plans can leave some people even more confused and stressed. We designed this resource guide to provide contact information that ranges from self-help options to more clinical/treatment options based on the different ‘levels of care’. We have also included information on various Recovery Support programs. This is a quick guide, we encourage you to go to our website for more detail on insurance navigation and determining what level of care is most appropriate. You will also find more resources on:
• Understanding insurance options• What is Level of Care• What are Recovery Support Services
2018 Resource Guide
Many hotlines, treatment centers and counseling services are available to help those struggling with addiction and their families. We’ve put together a comprehensive list of several resources in the area and beyond.

How to Dispose of Medicines ProperlyDON’T: Flush expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs down the toilet or drain unless the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs you to do so.
DO: Return unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs to a drug take-back program or follow the steps for household disposal below.
1ST CHOICE: DRUG TAKE-BACK EVENTS
To dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, call your city or county government’s household trash and recycling service and ask if a drug take-back program is available in your community. Some counties hold household hazardous waste collection days, where prescription and over-the-counter drugs are accepted at a central location for proper disposal.
2ND CHOICE: HOUSEHOLD DISPOSAL STEPS*
1. Take your prescription drugs out of their original containers.2. Mix drugs with an undesirable substance, such as cat litter
or used coffee grounds.3. Put the mixture into a disposable container with a lid, such
as an empty margarine tub, or into a sealable bag.4. Conceal or remove any personal information, including
Rx number, on the empty containers by covering it with permanent marker or duct tape, or by scratching it off.
5. The sealed container with the drug mixture, and the empty drug containers, can now be placed in the trash.
* Drug Disposal Guidelines, Office of National Drug Control Policy, October 2009
How Proper Disposal of Medicines Protects You and the Earth:• Prevents poisoning of children and pets• Deters misuse by teenagers and adults• Avoids health problems from accidentally taking the wrong medicine, too much of the same medicine, or a medicine that
is too old to work well• Keeps medicines from entering streams and rivers when poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet
How Improper Disposal of Medicines May End Up in Our Drinking Water SourcesIn homes that use septic tanks, prescription and over-the-counter drugs flushed down the toilet can leach into the ground and seep into ground water.
In cities and towns where residences are connected to wastewater treatment plants, prescription and over-the-counter drugs poured down the sink or flushed down the toilet can pass through the treatment system and enter rivers and lakes. They may flow downstream to serve as sources for
community drinking water supplies. Water treatment plants are generally not equipped to routinely remove medicines.
For more information, go to www.epa.gov/ppcp/or call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791

NAVIGATING THE LEGAL SYSTEM
Drug CourtsThe mission of the drug court program is to assist defendants in overcoming alcohol and other drug dependencies while resolving related criminal charges. Drug courts involve a highly specialized team process within the existing Superior Court structure that addresses nonviolent drug-related cases. They are unique in the criminal justice environment because they build a close collaborative relationship between criminal justice and drug treatment professionals.
The drug court judge heads a team of court staff, attorneys, probation officers, substance abuse evaluators and treatment professionals who work together to support and monitor a participant’s recovery. The program maintains a critical balance of authority, supervision, support and encouragement.
Drug court programs are rigorous, requiring intensive supervision based on frequent drug testing and court appearances, along with tightly structured regimens of treatment and recovery services. This level of supervision permits the program to support the recovery process, but also allows supervisors to react swiftly to impose appropriate therapeutic sanctions or to reinstate criminal proceedings when participants cannot comply with the program.
Drug court programs are characterized by:• Collaborative links among the courts, prosecutors, public defenders, law enforcement, treatment providers, social service agencies and community-based non-profit organizations;• A standardized assessment process used to identify eligible non-violent offenders;• Staff members trained in substance abuse and recovery issues operating in a non-adversarial atmosphere;• A system of graduated sanctions and incentives to encourage recovery goals and hold offenders accountable for non-compliant behaviors;• Continuous training and education on a state and national level for drug court professionals;• On-going program evaluation and implementation of improvements as warranted.
For more information, contact the Administrative Office of the Courts, Criminal Practice Division, Statewide Coordination, P.O. Box 982, Trenton, New Jersey 08625, or the drug court coordinators in the vicinages.
