This year’s JuniorDivision field has beendivided in two – 10-12-year-olds and 13-14-year-olds – giving thisyear’s field for the 89thResorters GolfTournament a total ofseven divisions.

And only one otherdivision will have a newchampion as six-timedefending titlist RonClayton of Sarasota,Florida, will not beamong the field takingthe course in theMasters Division.

All other divisionswill see the defendingchampion returning tomake a stab at a repeat.

They begin thataction on Monday asqualifying play opens atthe Alexandria GolfClub and is open to allspectators.

entered the Resorterslast year for the firsttime since 1983. He wasthe 2003 Minnesota GolfAssociation Mid-Amateur champion.

He is back looking fora repeat, but will have afull field standing in hisway, including five for-mer champions – MarkLindberg of Coppell,Texas (2002, 2003), PetePassolt of Minneapolis(1989), Greg Peterson ofRochester (2001), JerryRose of Sarasota,Florida (1979, 1983,2000) and Tyler Whitingof Alexandria (2008).

Add to that three for-mer Junior Division

champions – JackDressen of Edina (2004),Sean Halverson ofBaxter (2007) and JasonWhiting of Maple Grove(1995), and you have aformidable field await-ing Lehman.

Alexandria Golf Club proJeremy Decko is a familiar face onthe golf course, and on Sunday, hewill be looking to claim his thirdstraight Sprint All-StateWireless/Alexandria Area Hotelsand Hospitality Committee Pro-Am title.

Decko was the solo winner ofthe crown in 2008, then shared thevictory with Ben Meyers of theMedina Golf and Country Cluband Jeff Sorenson of the ColumbiaGolf and Learning Center as allthree turned in rounds of 68 to tie.

In its 23rd year, the Pro-Am willfeature many pros from aroundthe state, including seven-timechampion Don Berry of theEdinburgh Golf Club.

WomenMaggie Leland of Alexandria,

has two Resorters titles to hername, having won in 2007 and2009, and will be a formidableopponent as she comes off her bestseason of high school golf, havingwon the State Class AAA champi-onship and setting a state recordin the process and breaking a 29-year-old record with a two-dayscore of 143.

But she won’t be the only statechampion as Minnewaska’s SarahRoering of Glenwood enters thefield for the first time this year.

Roering tied for the Class AAtitle with her teammate AllieOstrander this year, and alsoboasts of a state title in 2008.

Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park,is back for another shot at theWomen’s title, having last wonthat crown in 2008. She also owns

the 2003 title, and is the ExecutiveWomen’s division champion from2007.

Her name is not alone on thewinners’ lists as Connie Sornsin ofGoodyear, Arizona returns to thefield after a one-year hiatus.

Sornsin has a pair of Women’sDivision titles under her belt,grabbing the crown in 2002 and2004.

Junior 10-12A new division will be unveiled

this year as the Junior Division isdivided into two, guaranteeing thesecond new champion for thisResorters.

The 10-12-year-old division willhave 16 players, with two of themactually 9 years old.

Junior 13-15The defending champion in the

overall Junior division, 14-year-oldNick Heinen of Edmond,Oklahoma, won the title last yearin a record-high field of 52 players.

The division of the Junior fieldinto two sub-divisions puts Heinenin the older, larger group that con-sists of 48 players.

That group boasts 20 playersfrom Alexandria.

Alexandria’s MaggieLeland used to spendeight hours a day on agolf course hoping oneday all those hourswould translate into astate title and an oppor-tunity to play collegegolf.

The latter of those wasrealized last winterwhen she signed a letterof intent to play golf atthe Division II level atAugustana College. Forthree years, though, thefirst of those goals hadeluded her.

Leland had a chanceas the Cardinal girlsadvanced to the statetournament the lastthree seasons. She cameinto every tournamentas a threat, but herhighest finish came lastspring when she tied for10th with a two-dayscore of 163.

That could have setthe tone for day two atthe Bunker Hills GolfCourse in Coon Rapidslast Wednesday. Lelandwas one back headinginto her final 18 holes asa high school golfer. Five

players were separatedby just two strokes atthe top of the leaderboard.

It took Leland all oftwo holes to begin toseparate herself fromthat group. She used asix iron to stick her sec-ond shot on the par-fiveNo. 2 to within 10 feet.She calmly drained thatputt for an eagle. It wasa big boost after she feltshe let a birdie slip awayon No. 1.

“I just barely missedbirdie on the first hole,”she said. “So to get twostrokes back on the sec-ond hole was like get-ting revenge on No. 1. Tobe two under put me ina great spot, but I triedto stay pretty levelheaded because I stillhad 16 holes left. I didn’tget ahead of myself, butin my head it was obvi-ously exciting.”

That was just thebeginning in whatwould turn into a spe-cial day for Leland. Shefinished off the frontwith two bogeys andthree more birdies. Sheput it on cruise controlon the back, carding onemore birdie to finish

with a four-under, 69. Leland did not just

win the state title, shedid it in style, eclipsinga record that had stoodfor 29 years with hertwo-day score of 143.That put her five shotsahead of the nearestcompetitor and six shotsin front of last year’schampion, Betsy Kellyof Forest Lake.

“It means the worldjust to be able to say Ibroke that record andplayed my best at mybiggest meet,” Lelandsaid. “I had no ideaabout the record. Afterthe round, a guy intro-duced himself and saidhe had coached the girlwho set the recordbefore. I didn’t evenknow what to say tohim. He was almost intears. It was great tomeet him and nice ofhim to come and con-gratulate me on that.”

It was a fitting end towhat was an almost per-fect senior season forLeland. She had alreadyestablished herself asone of Minnesota’s topprep golfers in the pastfew years. This year,though, she took her

game to another level. Leland lost just one

meet all season. Thatcame by one strokeagainst Minnewaska’sSarah Roering on May20 in St. Cloud. Lelandadded some distance to

her driver and her ironsthis season. Thatallowed her to hit ironsthat she felt more com-fortable with on herapproach shots. The endresult was more make-

Minnewaska sen-iors Sarah Roeringand Allie Ostranderfinished their two-day Class AA tour-nament competitionin a deadlock at 150to share the 2010individual title andlead their Lakerteam to an unprece-dented fifth straightchampionship –three in Class AAand two in Class A.No other school hasever won more thanthree consecutivetitles.

Both Lakers sen-iors were on all fivestate championshipteams.

Roering was thestate Class AAchampion in 2008,with her sister,Colorado StateUniversity golferEmily Roering, tak-ing the Class AAtitle in 2009.

Both years,Ostrander earnedrunner-up honors.

If it is any solace, Alexandria’s DaveHarris came closer to dethroningSarasota, Florida’s Ron Clayton thananyone has ever done during the

finals of the Men’s Masters’ Divisionlast year.

Clayton stretched his streak to sixstraight Masters’ championships bydefeating Harris 1-up in a back-and-forth battle.

“I guess winning never gets old,” hesaid during the awards ceremony. “I

am old, but the winning doesn’t getold…I do know I’ve had my picturetaken more with Jon Empanger (afive-time Executive champion andthis year’s Senior winner) more thanmy wife.”

Harris and Clayton came into the2009 tournament with nine Resorterstitles between them. Harris won theSenior championship in 1998 and2006, while Clayton added a 1994 and2000 Senior championship to his fiveMasters titles.

With such loaded resumes, thegallery was expecting a tight match.That’s exactly what they got. Harris

struck first with a par win on No. 1before Clayton evened things up onthe fourth with a par of his own.

Harris responded from there by tak-ing Nos. 5 and 6 with birdies. Clayton,like he usually does, had an answer.He picked up a birdie win of his ownon the par-three seventh before a parwin on No. 8 evened things up again.

That is how they would head intothe back. The match was then decidedon Nos. 12 and 13. Clayton tookadvantage of two bogeys by Harris tomove to 2-up with par wins. That leadwould hold until Harris birdied No. 16to move within one hole.

He would still need Clayton to slip

Other issues will be published followingqualifying on Wednesday morning withissues also on Thursday, Friday, andSaturday mornings following match play.

Copies will be located at various placesaround the club and as usual are free ofcharge.

It will be greatly appreciated if all cham-

pionship flight players will fill out theircards during the tournament and matchplay.

We know this takes some extra time butit is easier to write stories and conductinterviews following the matches.

If you know of something exciting ornewsworthy that happens during the tour-nament in any of the flights that we maynot be aware of and may not get much pub-licity, please pass it along.

Play in the Resorters Golf Tournament ismatch play, which is quite different from reg-ular scoring.

For those unfamiliar with it, in match playgolfers compete not for strokes, but for holes.

Whoever shoots the lowest score on a holewins it.

In the case of a tie, neither golfer movesup.

A score of 1-up means a golfer won onemore hole out of 18 than his or her opponent.

A score of 3-2 means a golfer was up threeholes with two holes remaining, so the finaltwo holes were not played.

A score of 5-4 means a golfer was up fiveholes with only four holes remaining so thefinal four holes were not played.

Minnetrista’s Tommy Brandabur picked thewrong time to play his worst round of theResorters tournament last year.

Brandabur locked up with Edmond, Oklahomanative Nick Heinen in the Junior finals and gotoff to a start that included two bogeys and a dou-ble-bogey. That helped Heinen, the 2008 runner-up, get off to a 2-up lead that he would only buildupon on his way to an 8-7 win for the champi-

onship. The Junior Division started with a record high

52 entrants at the start of the week. In the end,it was Heinen who stood tall with four steadyrounds in match play.

Heinen shot great to take advantage ofBrandabur’s struggles. A birdie on No. 4 gave hima 3-up lead and that was just the start. Heinen’sonly blemish through the rest of the round came

on No. 9 when he bogeyed to halve the hole. Parson Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 8 were all good for wins as hetook a seven-hole lead into the back nine.

Once there, he wasted no time putting thematch away. Heinen went 8-up with another paron No. 10. All that was needed now was a pushand the match would be over. That is exactlywhat he got on No. 11 when both players parredto send Heinen back to Oklahoma a champion.

27 Championship Holes…A “Must Play!!”

It was a match that featured a hugecomeback with some unusual circum-stances during last year’s champi-onship.

The Executive Men’s finals saw twobrothers going head-to-head in StefanFreeman of St. Cloud andChanhassen’s Jon Freeman. In what

was a tale of two nines, it was theyounger Stefan who came out on topin a thrilling 1-up, 19-hole match.

This one looked to be Jon’s matchfrom the get-go. He jumped out to a 3-up lead after three holes with a birdieand two par wins. That lead waspushed to five holes after taking Nos.

5 and 7 with pars.That is how he coasted into the back

before Stefan found his game. Stefanknew he would have to do somethingspecial in the final nine holes and thatis exactly what he did, shooting four-under to tie the match and send it toextra holes.

Stefan started his charge on No. 11with his first of back-to-back birdiewins. The two halved No. 13 beforeanother birdie win on the 14th gaveStefan reason to believe that a come-back was now within reach at twoback.

With three holes, he still found him-self down by that margin. But on Nos.16 and 17, he made it up with two parwins to even things up. Then on the18th, both players overcame the pres-sure to birdie the hole and send itback to the first tee box.

It was there that Stefan completed

the comeback by picking up a par winto secure his first-ever Resorters title.

“It was an unbelievable day,” hesaid. “I was five down at one time andsomehow clawed back, partly throughJon’s graciousness and party my owneffort.”

The win capped off an incredibleday for Stefan that saw him reach thefinals by edging Chad Johnson ofEden Prairie 1-up early Saturdaymorning. Jon had things come a littleeasier in his semifinals match with a5-4 win over Eric Heimsness ofWoodbury.

In the end, it will be the spiritedcomeback that will be rememberedmost by both players. Shooting four-under on the back helped Stefan over-come five bogeys on the front. It willbe a round to talk about in the

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland, whowill be a high school senior atJefferson High School in Alexandriathis fall, won her second Women’sDivision with a 5-3 win over AllisonThimjon of Plymouth last year at theAlexandria Golf Club during theResorters Golf Tournament champi-onship.

Leland won her first title in 2007.“I hit my driver well,” she said after

her 5-3 win. “My short game was notvery good and my front nine was nottoo good, but I played well on theback.”

Leland said the key to her matchwas going 1-up on No. 9, which start-ed her on a roll where she won thenext two holes.

How does this win compare to hervictory two years ago?

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” shesaid. “It’s fun – this is one of myfavorite tournaments.”

She is no stranger to success on thegolf course, having been the CentralLakes Conference medalist the pastthree years for the Cardinals and hasbeen among the top four golfers in theconference since 2006.

She has also been a participant inthe State Class AAA girls’ golf tourna-ment for three years, most recentlyearning the individual state titlewhile setting a new state record lowscore.

Leland hasn’t decided yet where shewill be attending college. She said sheplans to golf for a Division II college

team.To get to the finals, Leland had to

defeat Caitlin Cummings of Chaska 8-7, Belinda Wink of Alexandria 6-5 andMolly Knutson of Edina 2-up.

Thimjon downed Andrea Dwyer ofElk River 7-5, Barbara Burton ofScottsdale, Arizona 4-3 and defendingchampion Betsy Aldrich of St. LouisPark 1-up.

“I just took it one shotat a time,” Leland saidabout her improvementthis year. “I think I gotahead of myself in thepast in order to shoot a

certain score. This year,I just went with it anddidn’t let my emotionsget to me.”

That showed on daytwo at Bunker Hills lastWednesday. Leland saidshe was not nervous atall when she steppedonto the first tee boxwith a one-shot deficit.

“I was actually justreally excited,” she said.“I knew that one of thegirls in the top five wasgoing to take it, and I

am really good friendswith all of them. Eitherway, it would have beenfine.”

That attitude helpedher post one of the bestrounds of her highschool career at the mostimportant time. Lelandwas already a CentralLakes Conference and aSection 8AAA medalist.Her latest title trumpsall of those accolades –the perfect ending to analmost perfect season.

“I played well all week,” saidEmpanger. “In fact, this is the best I’veplayed in this tournament ever. I wasunder par in every one of my match-es.”

Empanger, the medalist, was 3-under par in the final match.

“I don’t know what it is about thiscourse, but I always seem to play wellhere,” he said.

Senior Men’s Division


Back when the Lehman brothers –Jim Jr., Tom and Mike – were growingup in Alexandria in the 1970s, theirdad, Jim Sr., told them he’d be veryproud if they ever qualified for aResorters Golf Tournament champi-onship.

The whole Lehman family wasbeaming after last year’s Men’sDivision championship. Jim LehmanJr., now of Plymouth, defeated WillHarris of Alexandria 5-4 to win thetitle.

“Oh wow! I can’t tell you what agreat thrill it is to be here – to comeback home and be part of this tourna-ment,” said the 51-year-old Lehmanafter his big win at the AlexandriaGolf Club.

His feat duplicated what TomLehman, now a pro with severalchampionships to his credit includingthe 1996 British Open, did back in1980. Tom Lehman defeated BillIsraelson 3-2 that year to win theResorters.

The youngest Lehman, Mike, madeit to the Resorters finals twice (1996and 1990) but didn’t win.

On Saturday morning, Lehmanadvanced into the finals with a 2-1win over former Alexandrian, JackDressen.

Lehman trailed by one at the turnbut won three holes on the back – Nos.12, 15 and 16 with a birdie and twopars to steal the lead. He advanced tothe finals by matching Dressen’s paron No. 17.

Harris, meanwhile, made it into thefinals with his third straight overtimewin – a 19-hole thriller over GeoffKlein of Mankato. Klein won fourstraight holes on the front, Nos. 5through 8, and led by three at theturn, but Harris battled back, winningNos. 10, 11, 14 and 15 on the backnine.

Klein was able to win only one holeon the back, a par on No. 6, and hecould only match Harris’ pars on thefinal three holes, which sent thematch into overtime. Harris won thefirst extra hole with par to make hisfirst appearance in the finals.

A good-sized gallery gathered towatch the Harris-Lehman match,which was played under overcastskies with only a whisper of a wind tocool the muggy afternoon.

Lehman jumped out front earlywith a birdie on No. 1. Harris tied itwith a par on No. 3 but Lehman coun-tered with a par win on No. 4 to regainthe lead.

Leman padded his advantage witha nifty up-and-down birdie out of theleft bunker on No. 6 to go 2-up.

Lehman also found the trap on theshort No. 7. He chipped out and waseyeing a long putt for par but he madeit again, keeping his lead intact anddrawing a burst of applause from thegallery.

After halving No. 8 with pars, bothfinalists left their approach shotsshort on No. 9. Lehman, however,rolled his birdie try to within just acouple of feet while Harris was still 20feet away. Lehman dropped in his parand Harris didn’t, giving Lehman a 3-up lead at the turn.

With a light mist now falling,Lehman kept the pressure on by win-ning No. 11 with birdie. Harris’ birdietry just missed and he now trailed byfour.

Harris earned a hole back on No. 12with a birdie to draw within three.Lehman made his only mistake of theday on that hole, hooking his tee shot

out of bounds.Lehman wasn’t about to let this one

slip away though. He won No. 13 withpar to go 4-up and he hit his approachon No. 14 dead at the stick, rolling theball just six feet from the cup.

The match came to an end, 5-3,minutes later when Lehman drainedthe birdie putt to take the hole.

Although Harris lost, he was happyto reach the Resorters’ final plateau.

“I’m not upset – I just didn’t reallyhave my game going,” he said. “I triedto scramble but he had his game on.”

Harris, a 21-year-old senior at theUniversity of Minnesota, also has arich tradition of golf running throughhis family. His uncle, John, made it tothe Resorters semifinals in 1972, is aformer U of M All American and is onthe PGA tour. His grandfather, Dr. BobHarris, lost in the final of the U.S.Senior Amateur last year.

Lehman, the 2003 Minnesota GolfAssociation Mid-Amateur champion,credited his experience to making thedifference in the Resorters. “I wasn’tthe best player in the field – therewere a lot of young, talented kids inthis.”

“I was 1-up or more the whole way,”he added about his match againstHarris. “He just didn’t play as well inthe afternoon as he did in the morn-ing.”

Consistency was also key.“I hit my driver solid and kept it in

the fairway,” Lehman said. “Some ofthese young guys like to bomb it butit’s better to play your own game, hit itdown the fairway, get on the green andmake a birdie every once in a while.”

This year is the first time since1983 that Lehman has entered theResorters.

A 1976 graduate of Jefferson HighSchool, Lehman said he spent most ofhis free time since then building hisbusiness and didn’t have a lot of timefor golf until he was into his 40s.

Winning the Resorters was not onlya thrill but a bit of a surprise forLehman. He said in high school, heand Tom put more focus on othersports, like football, where they bothexcelled at quarterback, taking theirteam to the state tournament.

“Golf was something we did justthree months out of the year,” he said.

Now he’ll have a Resorters trophyto display year-round.

And that makes them just thethird team in the nation to have astring of wins that long.

Henderson Green Valley ofNevada posted 144 consecutivewins spanning 1992 to 2004, withPhoenix Xavier CollegePreparatory in Arizona havingthree different strings of 128 (1985-1996, 123 (1996-2007) and 77(1979-1985) straight wins.
