Branston Biz The Branston network teamed up with new neighbour Bracebridge Heath Business Network in a joint event this week, part of a regular series. They heard from LN6, another network sharing good ideas. We meet monthly on the last Thursday at the Branston Waggon and Horses 5.30 for 6pm start. It’s a great way to network, showcase your business and encourage local purchasing. All welcome. Our next big event will be the Christmas Market in Branston.

Lincoln Pitch Event £1000, mini pad and a personal flight were won by three small businesses at the Lincoln Pitch Event with Dragons’ Den success story Andrew Harsley, and Virgin Media Pioneers Regional Ambassador, Michael Overton. “Dragons” included Jon Thornes, Dragon’s Den success story Andrew Harsley. The event launched the Virgin Media Pioneers East Midlands Network, which you can google and join, ready for the next opportunity.

Voluntary Car Scheme We are having a meeting to re-launch our Voluntary Car Scheme for the Cliff Villages, Harmston to Leadenham. The Navenby Scheme is working fine, and the Louth scheme has been extending to our area. Our Cliff Villages Scheme is now looking for all the support we can get. The Council support staff is coming along. Hence the mini coffee morning on Friday 18th October in The Venue, Navenby at 10am. It is a small but important service and your support is hugely appreciated.

Global Corporate Challenge Independents tackled the challenge. Our valiant team of four walked 2,672 miles in 112 days over the summer, enough to relay across the Atlantic. Mrs Smith’s Cottage Best wishes to Dr Rodney Wilson, our Chairman who fell ill recently and is on the mend. Best wishes to Jenny Chandler who is also unfortunately not well. Malcolm Smith has kindly taken the reins during this phase of helping NKDC get the Cottage roof beam repairs funded and done, hopefully with a grand re-opening next year.

Useful Information

Internet Fraud

Like me, you may have received cunning e-mail scams and wondered if and where to report them. Now there is a body who is working on them.

Parish Council Tax Properties where residents are on low income are no longer counted in the govt grants from central govt, so parishes may need to make this up. NKDC covered it with an extra grant last year for one year, so that Parishes could plan for it. Do have a look at the precept calculator on NKDC website Sleaford Community larder [email protected] Held at the New Life Church, Mareham Lane. Campaigns Thank you very much to all who kindly took up the cudgels in support. Letters from me are on www.lincolnshireindependents.org.uk and on the Lincolnite. Massive Housing We all want some housing, but the idea of flooding the market in the hope of forcing prices down has not worked elsewhere, where new houses lie empty or, if occupied as people are encouraged to take on more debt, there is a risk of not enough jobs and a strain on local services.

Instead, it seems to me we should start with the jobs, and then build houses to match the need, available infrastructure and services. I have also responded that we should have more of any forthcoming “roof tax” be spent locally rather than centrally in Lincoln. I have also encouraged a range of renewable energy sources and a less heavy reliance on wind turbines and solar panel farms. The county council has agreed. LCC has objected to the core strategy on this basis. The Core Strategy has listed that Lincolnshire is planning on having 60% of our electricity from renewable sources, such farmland used for wind turbines and solar arrays. The rest of the country is on 15%, so you can see what is likely to happen. I argued for it to be at 30%, same as Europe, which has been partially accepted. There are currently five solar array applications working their way through planning at NKDC. Applications range from 2 to 239 acres of solar panels. In the right place and scale, they seem to be a better option than huge wind turbines. The five year housing land supply for Mr Pickles is calculated at a rate of housing increase prior to 2009, when borrowings and new houses were going up at their fastest rate ever. I have objected to allowing new housing on a big scale without adequate infrastructure. I would like to see economic growth leading and housing and infrastructure following together as we can afford, not the other way around. Please let me know if you had any difficulty getting on the web to make your response. Libraries Thank you for writing and signing the petition which has been submitted registering that we should keep Metheringham and Branston libraries as a professional service. I met with Cllr Worth, the Parish Council and the secondary school to make the case for keeping Branston Library. It is a successful, well-used library, with shared costs and IT training available. Colleagues and I have also come up with an alternative where we keep our libraries and most mobile stops, with one professional staff, and voluntary support, which still makes the savings. The next meeting is on October 30th at LCC 10.30am to hear the results of the consultation. Public are welcome to attend.
