BETA THETA PI ADDITION

WHEREAS, pursuant to Board Rule 415, The University of Alabama (“University”) is requesting The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama (“Board”) to consider approval of the Stage III submittal for the Beta Theta Pi fraternity (ΒΘΠ) Addition project (“Project”) located at 960 University Boulevard; and

WHEREAS, the Project will encompass a 955 gross square foot (gsf) addition to its existing 19,613 gsf house on the third floor above the existing entrance portico to provide convenient, designated study space for the chapter members; and

WHEREAS, responsible officials at the University have received renderings for the Stage III submittal and are recommending approval of said design; and

WHEREAS, the Project location and program have been reviewed and are consistent with the University Campus Master Plan, University Design Standards and the principles contained therein; and

WHEREAS, the Project will be funded from Chapter Reserves in the amount of $524,400; and

WHEREAS, ΒΘΠ has sufficient funds in their Building Fund in the amount of $1,063,418 to support the cost of the Project; and

WHEREAS, the budget for the Project is as stipulated below: BUDGET: PRELIMINARY Construction $ 400,000 Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment $ 20,000 Contingency* (10%) $ 40,000 UA Project Management Fee** (3%) $ 13,200 Architect/Engineer Fee*** (7.8%) $ 31,200 Expenses (Surveys, Testing, Inspections) $ 10,000 Other Fees and Services (Advertising, Printing, and Postage) $ 10,000

TOTAL PROJECT COST $ 524,400 *Contingency is based on 10% of the cost of construction.**UA Project Management Fee is based on 3% of the cost of construction and contingency.***Architect/Engineer Fee is based on 7.8% of the cost of construction.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama that the Stage III submittal for the Project is hereby approved.

Pursuant to Board Rule 415, The University of Alabama ("University") has received renderings for the

Beta Theta Pi (B011) fraternity ("chapter") Addition project ("Project") and is requesting The Board of

Trustees of The University of Alabama ("Board") to consider approval of the Stage III submittal based on

the renderings presented.

Located at 960 University Boulevard, the current house is 19,613 gross square feet (gst). The Project will

encompass a 955 gsf addition to provide a designated study space on the third floor above the existing

entrance portico. The study room will seat approximately 25 people and provide convenient, designated

study space for the chapter members.

The Project will be funded from Chapter Reserves in the amount of $524,400. B0I1 has sufficient funds

in their Building Fund to support the Project. The current balance in their Building Fund is $1,063,418.

The Project location and program have been reviewed and are consistent with the Campus Master Plan,

University Design Standards, and the principles contained therein. I have attached a Resolution,

Executive Summary, Project Summary, Location map and Renderings for your review. Subject to your

approval, I recommend this item be forwarded to the Chancellor for inclusion as an Action Item on the

agenda of the Physical Properties Committee at the Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for February 6 -

7, 2020.

RELATIONSHIP & ENHANCEMENT OF CAMPUS PROGRAMS:

The Beta Theta Pi (ΒΘΠ) Addition project (“Project”) will accommodate the fraternity’s growing and diverse chapter membership by providing a facility that is operationally, programmatically, and functionally appropriate to meet the needs of the fraternity. This Project will allow members of ΒΘΠ to comfortably accommodate the projected chapter size and the growing Greek community by enhancing the living experience for existing members as well as future members. Opportunities for involvement in social and fraternal organizations are a key part of the college experience for many students. Providing this opportunity is an important recruitment factor for many students and can enhance the experience for those who participate as reflected by the fact that over one-third of University of Alabama students participate in the Greek community.

Project Summary

BETA THETA PI ADDITION

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity (ΒΘΠ) desires to add 955 gross square feet (gsf) to their existing 19,613 gsf house (“Project”) located at 960 University Boulevard. This addition will provide convenient, designated study space for the chapter members and will seat 20-25 people. Due to the lack of study space currently available within the house, chapter members living in the house must seek study space in other areas of campus.

The Project will entail building an addition to the third floor of the house above the existing entrance portico. The addition is specifically designed to respect the existing building architecture and that of campus.

The current facility has a bed count of 36 and this Project will eliminate 2 beds for a revised count of 34. The existing porch structure’s ability to support the additional loads has been confirmed.

The additions materials will be carefully selected to match the existing building including shingles, windows and trim.
