• Use relatively heavy loads if the goal is

strength >85% or power (80 – 90%).• Use moderate loads for hypertrophy (67 – 85%).• Use light loads for muscular endurance (< 67%).• A certain RM emphasizes a certain outcome (indicated by

the larger font sizes), but training benefits are blended at any given RM.

• The relationship between the percentage of the 1RM and the estimated number of repetitions that can be performed at that load allows the strength and conditioning profes-sional to assign a specific resistance to be used for an exercise in a training session.

• The training goal is attained when the athlete lifts a load of a certain percentage of the 1RM for the goal number of repetitions.

The physiology of performance

• For the body to move, involves stimulation of muscles in a specific manner, in turn this produces force which creates movement. Stimulus in the brain, reflex.

• Movement can be simple, single joint or complex, multi-joint.

• Motor units are recruited to produce force. Low-threshold motor units are recruited before higher-threshold motor units in most activities.

• Muscle fiber recruitment types: type 1,type 2a and 2b.

• For training adaptations to occur one needs to activate the correct muscle fibers through the motor unit stimulation.
