Our EthosCompass Residential Services give children the opportunity to encounter normal, ordinary experiences in order to provide them with the building blocks to reach developmental milestones needed for everyday life.
Compass does not subscribe to a single theoretical or therapeutic model, but looks instead at each child and their needs. The emphasis is on individualised care and the staff to child ratio reflects this. We understand that quality relationships between the children and residential support workers are a significant feature in effecting change in children; alongside a structure of routines, clear expectations, good parenting and safe emotional and physical containment.
Compass recognises the importance of investing in and retaining good support workers; offering high quality training, frequent supervision as well as specialist independent consultation. The culture is based on family values of respect, caring, education, social and leisure pursuits and good health. These core values have enabled Compass Children’s Homes to be continually rated as ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Compass however, measure success in good outcomes for the children looked after by providing a safe, caring and developmental environment for every child to achieve.
All of our homes have been rated as ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ by Ofsted
We are child centred and measure success by achieving good outcomes. Quality relationships between the children and the residential support workers are a significant feature in effecting change in the children. Our staff to child ratios reflect this, allowing quality time to be spent developing significant relationships.

Residential Service Overview
IntroductionOur children’s homes provide the highest quality care and substitute parenting for children who experience a range of behavioural and emotional difficulties. They are founded on the core values, experience and culture that has made Compass Fostering one of the most successful independent fostering agencies in the country.
The experience of children in our careOur homes are not institutionalised and will never be referred to as a “unit”. We take pride in the appearance of of our homes, with decoration and furnishings of a high standard. We afford children all the experiences and opportunities they need to equip them for the transition into adult life.
Children’s voices are heard and they are empowered to make decisions in the running of the home when appropriate. Creative and practical solutions are sought to ensure that care plans and protection plans are implemented fully.

Problematic Sexualised Behaviour (PSB)
Stepping Forward Intervention Programme
The Stepping Forward Intervention Programme offers a bespoke therapeutic path for young people with PSB. It enables each young person to move from needing high levels of support and supervision to enjoying safe independence in the community. Stepping Forward was developed by Mentor Forensic Services for Compass and is an attachment-based framework that focuses on goal-setting and building on strengths.
Stepping Forward recognises the importance of viewing a young person holistically, allowing intervention to be customised to the particular needs of the individual child and family, rather than adopting a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
The programme is based upon an integrated therapeutic approach that uses a range of interventions, including:• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy• Integrated Psychotherapy• Psychodrama• Mindfulness
EducationTwo of our homes provide on site education for the children and young people living there, delivered by Compass Community School. To request a school prospectus, please call us on 0845 561 0260 or visit www.compasschildrenshomes.com.
IntroductionOur therapeutic model has been specifically designed to identify and meet the therapeutic needs of children and young people who have developed Problematic Sexual Behaviour (PSB). The philosophy is to meet individual children’s developmental needs through the deliberate promotion of ordinary experiences – family values, respect, caring, education, social and leisure pursuits and good health. An emphasis is placed upon each child receiving individualised education, therapy and care within a framework and structure of routines, clear expectations, good parenting and safe emotional and physical containment.
About our specialist teamOur PSB programmes are run in partnership with Mentor Forensic Services (MFS), whose assessment and intervention with young people is underpinned by the most recent research in the field as well as extensive clinical practice. MFS was established by the leading international forensic psychologist Dr Joe Sullivan and consists of a multi-disciplinary team of highly experienced specialists.
AssessmentThe PSB assessment process is key to understanding the young person and to developing a bespoke approach that will help them. Assessments usually involve meetings with multi agency professionals, family members (where appropriate) and a review of relevant case files.
