JONES Ballard Property Grouphas joined the fight to raise greaterawareness of mental illnesses.

Sponsoring a recent charitycricket match at Aquinas College, the group helped raise $6000.

The annual 20/20 cricket matchis held in honour of formerAquinas student Philip Kennedy, who lost his life to depression in2006.

The PK Cup, as it is known, began in 2006 and more than$20,000 has been collected todate.

Former Aquinas student andprincipal of Jones Ballard Property

Group Nik Jones said the eventhelped raise much-needed fundsto assist in the treatment ofpatients, by improving the facilitiesat Graylands Hospital.

“Money is raised on the day ofthe charity cricket match throughraffles, auctions and food stalls,’’ hesaid.

“Jones Ballard has been a bigsupporter of this major communi-ty event because it is a very posi-tive way to assist mental illness.

“This year our company waspleased to fund the caps, whichplayers wore on the day.”

Former Aquinas student and

organiser of the PK Cup, AlexQuin, said the 2010 event was themost successful to date.

“We had a couple of hundredpeople attend the 2010 PK Cupand each year the event goes

from strength to strength,’’ hesaid.

“This charity event would onlybe made possible through the sup-port of the local community andbusinesses.” ■

Recovery is onthe way in 2011THE affluent western suburbs market isexpected to rebound in 2011.

According to the principal of CapornYoung Estate Agents, Richard Young, thepast year had been a very challengingone for the premium property market inWA due to a combination of rising inter-est rates, uncertainly caused by the Fed-eral election and mining super tax.

“Sales began to slow significantly dur-ing the later half of 2010 due to thesefactors and, as a result, the number ofproperties listed for sale rose dramati-cally, meaning that sellers had to take avery competitive approach to the pricingof their homes,’’ he said.

“At the same time, buyers have beenlargely absent from the premium proper-ty market during the later half of 2010.

“For most of the second half of 2010,many buyers have effectively been 'sittingon the fence' and not making a decisionto buy in the expectation that priceswould fall even further.”

But over the past two months MrYoung said Caporn Young had recordedan upward movement in sales.

“Recent comments from the ReserveBank indicate that interest rates will beon hold for the foreseeable future andthis has also given buyers greater confi-dence to purchase a home,’’ he said.

“In addition, astute property buyersunderstand that the local economy willgain further traction during 2011, due tothe massive new investment in theresources sector, and this in turn willlead to a rising demand for property dur-ing the coming year.”

Mr Young said the first sign of a futureupswing in the property market was therising demand for rental accommodationand Caporn Young was starting to noticethis trend, particularly for homes with aweekly rent in excess of $1500.

“Caporn Young has now a severeshortage of executive homes for rentdue to the increasing number of execu-tives moving to WA. Properties rentingfor $2000 a week are now being leasedvery quickly by our company,’’ he said.

He urged buyers to move swiftly whilestock levels were high. ■

Executive rentals wanted by Chevron

PROPERTY management staff at Pax-ton Hoad have their work cut out overChristmas to find 50 executive propertyleases in the western suburbs by January.

International energy corporationChevron is bringing 50 families fromaround the world to Perth for a minimumof two-year contracts.

The families will come from Singapore,Canada, the UK, France and America.

Paxton Hoad property manager Melis-sa McDonald said they were looking forhomes of a particular calibre.

“We are after modern family homes,

preferably with four bedrooms and twobathrooms, and spacious outdoor areas,”she said.“Families from the UK especiallylove pools and are big on security.”

Mrs McDonald said homes around theriver and beachfront were highly desir-able and that they had already receivedconsiderable interest from owners ofproperties in City Beach, Swanbourneand Cottesloe.

She said homes need to have a ‘wowfactor’ and owners can expect houses tobe leased from $1000 per week. Formore information, call 9381 8022 ■

New nest for innercity boutique firm

BOUTIQUE real estate agency Acton now has a newoffice in the Perth CBD.

It is the first time Acton has ventured into the lucra-tive inner city apartment and commercial developmentmarket.

Acton City principal Kim Turner said the inner citymarket had plenty to offer and was constantly growing.

“The latest amendments to Residential Design Codesare exciting as they will allow developers to build moreapartments on inner city blocks of land and this will addto the vibrancy of inner city living in Perth,” he said.

Mr Turner has worked in real estate for more thanseven years and was previously the owner of an EastPerth based real estate office.

Prior to entering the property industry, Mr Turnerspent time in the military. “I appreciate now the disci-pline that the military drilled into me,’’ he said.

Servicing the Perth, East Perth and Northbridgeareas, Mr Turner said Acton City would assist the manyyoung professionals who like to live close to work, entertainment, dining, fashion and transport.

Acton’s new city office is at 459 Hay Street, Perth. ■

NUMBER 3 Gordon Street is ahouse that makes you stop andstare.

Recently completed, the strik-ing, double-storey stone structure– the vision of Conrad Oma ofGrand Design Homes – is some-what of an architectural master-piece.

Oma purchased a 1416 squaremetre block with an old Methodistchurch on it at the corner of Gor-don and Edward streets sevenyears ago.

He then subdivided the blockinto three and has built the first oftwo homes (he plans to restoreand extend thechurch as hisown residence.)

A consultingengineer, Oma isalso a lover ofarchitecture.

Inspired byprominent mid-20th centuryarchitects suchas Pierre Koenig,Eero Sarrinenand RichardNeutra, the Gordon Street resi-dence is retrospective while con-temporary.

The entrance opens into a vastliving area – sunken from streetlevel – with black bi-fold doorsthat open onto a magnificentcourtyard terrace and aboveground plunge pool.

Further on, a sleek kitchen anddining area also open out to thetree-lined courtyard, lending itselfto entertaining of any nature.

A wall of floor-to-ceiling glassruns the length of the secondstorey, capturing rooftop vistas.

The levels are connected by astriking travertine staircase withcustomised stainless steel bars.

Full-height marble with a subtleamethyst reflectlines the walls ofthe bathrooms, which are stun-ning in their ownright.

Oma hasincluded a sepa-rate shower withan exposed roofwithin the designof each bath-room, providingan invigorating

way to experience the elements, whatever the season.

Three spacious bedrooms occu-py the upper level, two of whichhave built-in-robes and desks in alight American walnut, offset bylow sheen white lacquer cabinetry– a beautiful combination that con-tinues in the kitchen and laundry.

Each room in the house alsofeatures a stunning, Italian stylelight fixture, a focal point you areimmediately drawn to.

Brilliant in both form and func-tion, Oma has created theresidence. ■
