The Peninsula keeps coming up trumps Understand the specs

THREE western suburbs build-ings have snapped up honours inthis year’s Building DesignersAssociation of WA annual awards.

A new contemporary familyhome in Wembley, an iconic her-itage home in Cottesloe and a fer-tility clinic in Subiaco were amongwinners at Saturday’s gala presen-tation event at the UniversityClub of WA.

Building designers Griff Morrisand Ken Wibberley, of SolarDwellings, were applauded fortheir eco friendly design of theresidence in Wembley.

Judges acknowledged that

while the client sought a visuallyappealing home that would standout from the existing streetscape, great importance was placed onits environmental sustainability.

Among its many sustainablefeatures are a rainwater harvest-ing system, photovoltaic system, heat pump hot water system, water efficient taps and smart

wiring.A sensitive renovation to one

of Cottesloe’s iconic heritagehomes was named winner of theBDAWA award for residentialalterations over $200,000.

Judges said the designer,William Clark of William ClarkDesign, was particularly careful toprotect and conserve the originalbuilding.

A new fertility clinic in Subiacowas named winner of the awardfor special structures.

Stephen Shircore, of MeyerShircore and Associates, designedthe state-of-the-art facility. ■

WITH its striking architectural design, prox-imity to the Perth CBD and luxurious livingoptions, it’s not a surprise Mirvac’s The Penin-sula, Burswood is turning heads.

The development recently received highacclaim at the recent Urban Development Insti-tute of Australia (UDIA) WA Awards for Excel-lence, with the project’s Aurora apartmentbuilding winning Best High Density Develop-ment.

Aurora, which stands at 21 levels and compris-es 133 residential apartments, is the fourth towerto be completed at The Peninsula, Burswood.

Mirvac WA chief executive Evan Campbellsays the award is testament to the quality ofconstruction and level of finishes, attention to

detail and architectural expression of the build-ing.

“Aurora really showcases Mirvac’s designphilosophy towards high quality residentialapartment living,” he said.

“The building has a striking architecturaldesign with modern, spacious apartments thatare complemented by a range of facilitiesincluding a fully equipped gymnasium, heatedswimming pool, sundeck and barbecue area.

“Aurora makes the most of its location just5km from the CBD, with the orientation anddesign of the building maximising stunningviews of the Swan River, city skyline and Bur-swood Park golf course.”

The Peninsula, Burswood’s latest win adds toa swag of previous awards including two UDIAHigh Density Development Awards for Allegro, the first tower within the development, as wellas the 2008 Master Builders Award for BestMetropolitan Development Comprising Multi-Unit Dwellings over $10 million.

Just a limited number of luxury apartmentsare available for sale in Aurora, priced from$680,000, with a choice of two, three and four-bedroom designs available.

A CLEAR under-standing of builders’specifications iscritical. This weekTristan Kirkhamfrom New HomeBuilding Brokers(pictured) shareshelpful top tips.1. Make sure both parties under-

stand what you wantPeople have pictures and photos ofhomes showing the specification theylike; however, having champagne tasteon a beer budget is very common. So ahave clear line of communication ofthis dream specification and make surea builder costs your home correctly.2. Builders’ ability to deliverMany people find out far too late inthe process a builder’s inability toinstall a particular item. Choosing theright builder upfront where detail andresponsibilities are outlined is the onlyway to avoid this disappointment.3. What is good quality & valueExpensive brands don’t necessarilymean they will be good quality or actu-ally work. Picking fancy tapware, forexample, can be a plumber’s night-mare, which you may not discoveruntil your first maintenance call to thebuilder after you have moved in.

Always discuss upgraded items withtradesmen, the builders and an inde-pendent consultant upfront.

4. Builders’ mark-upsBuilders are required to outline to youthe margin they are placing on a varia-tion item under the Home BuildingContracts Act, however they do nothave to tell you their costs. So youreally cannot see the mark-up, and thisfrustrates people. Using an independ-ent consultant can help you under-stand the real value you are getting.

5. Fashionable in futureIt never fails to amaze me the

amount of homes that people buildfeaturing high fashion statements andimpractical items. Do get this corrector it will cost you long term when youone day try to sell the property.

Inspired by the tropicalambience of old HawaiiWHEN designing their riversideproperty, the owners of this Mos-man Park residence did not want ashow home.

Instead, they envisaged arelaxed, tropic-inspired space andCharlie Casella Homes built thestunning property a little overthree years ago.

Number 34 has a wide, elevatedfrontage with a timeless design, emulating the luxurious plantationresidences of the Hawaiian islands.

Located at the end of a small, quiet cul-de-sac in prestigiousMosman Waters, the home over-looks natural parkland and enjoysbeautiful views of the river.

Fully matured palms trees sur-round the home within beautifullandscaped gardens that automati-cally illuminate at night.

There are four bedrooms andthree bathrooms plus a large studythat could be another bedroom.

No expense was spared in theconstruction.

The window and doorframesthroughout the home appear to betimber but are in fact an importedsimulated grain from Europe thatnever fades or wears, a wonderfulquality so close to the river.

Bamwood flooring lines thefloor and natural light fills thehome through huge double-glazedwindows. There is granite to allexternal terraces, Italian tiling in allbathrooms and a magnificent over-sized kitchen with self-closingdrawers, high gloss lacquer finish,Ceasar stone benchtops and Boschappliances.

An elegant, cedar panelledCabana overlooks the swimmingpool with a quartz finish, providinga stunning area for barbecue meals, entertaining or a glass of wine.

An activity or multi-media roomis located off the kitchen and isperfect for children’s own space.

The bedrooms are upstairs andpossess commanding river viewsthrough plantation shutters. ■

Elevate your lifestyle touncompromising styleTHE brief for the Palazzo Homes design ofPanorama was simple – to achieve views fromevery room.

When visiting the display home in Apple-cross, it is evident that the design lives up tothe name and certainly delivers on its require-ment with an extensive use of windows.

Uncompromising in style and comfort, thethree-level residence is more than you couldimagine.

Contemporary architecture is comple-mented by all the trimmings, which include anelevator servicing each floor.

The front entrance only heightens expecta-tions, with its Spanish marble floor tiles and agrand staircase.

This ground floor has a long laundry, withaccess to a triple garage, plus a guest bedroomfeaturing a high recessedceiling, built-in robes, well-appointed semi-ensuite anddoor out to the patio withgleaming swimming pooloutlook.

The marble tiling contin-ues on the first floor.

An open-plan main livingzone makes up the back halfof the home and takes in the view which, inthe case of the Fraser Road location, is of theSwan River and Melville Waters.

The dining and family room has beendesigned with the capability to open out to alarge balcony with glass balustrade.

Clean, sleek lines dominate in the kitchen, featuring integrated fridge and freezer, draw-ers with a push close touch mechanism, walk-in pantry and a hideaway utility space.

Multiple textures have been used in thiszone and they include glossy lacquer, Caesarstone, timber veneers and granite.

The kitchen appliances on offer range froma dishwasher to an induction cooktop.

Wallpaper has been added to the walls andceiling in the audio visual room for acousticpurposes.

Blue LED lighting and a cavity sliding doorcompletes the carpetedhideaway.

The master bedroomsuite is on the third andfinal level, with a largeretreat and full-length win-dows to yet another bal-cony.

There are also extensivebuilt-in robes plus a lavish

open ensuite with spa, shower, full wall tilingand twin basin vanity.

All three minor bedrooms on this floor aregenerously sized with built-in robes and hugewindows, while the bathroom is just as luxuri-ous as the master ensuite.

With a definite chic, Panorama has ductedreverse-cycle airconditioning, full securitywith cameras, ducted vacuum, 485sqm of liv-ing space and is just pure indulgence.

A lucky owner has already snapped up thishome. Palazzo Homes can build you thePanorama for $1.9 million. ■

South Cott apartments are a group ofeight relatively new, luxury apartments forover 55s.

Tasmanian oak timber floorboards featurethroughout the living areas with plush carpet

WHEN the owners of this charming Subiacohome bought it eight years ago, it looked vastlydifferent.

“It was a total dump,” said the owner.“But there was never any intention to

demolish it.”The original part of the early 1900s home

still possesses archetypal character featuresincluding high ceilings, jarrah floorboards and areturn verandah at the front.

During the eight years however, the homehas been modernised and extended.

“I never wanted to blend the old with the

new,” the owner said. “I wanted it to be clearthat this is where the old part ends and this iswhere the new part begins.”

The ‘new part’ is a contemporary kitchen, lounge, dining and alfresco, flanked by a largeswimming pool, aggregate paving and charminggarden.

Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windowsallow the sunlight to stream in the area andprovides a beautiful garden vista to enjoy fromthe kitchen.

A skillion roof to the family and alfrescogives the home added space with clerestory

windows providing additional light to thearea.

There are four bedrooms and a beautifulcontemporary bathroom, which also conve-niently houses the laundry.

The master bedroom overlooks the frontgarden and features built in robes.

The second and third bedrooms each fea-ture fireplaces and one has french doors ontothe verandah.

Along the northern boundary of the house, abeautiful courtyard with jasmine creepers andfruit trees is a favourite spot of the owner to sitand enjoy a morning coffee with girlfriends.

As for living on Nicholson Road, the ownersaid it was a misconception that busy roads arenoisy or problematic.

“I love living on Nicholson, not only is it quietand safe for the kids, but we are just metresfrom shops, cafés and bars.” ■

LUXURY LIVING 23

IT was looking through display homes with myhusband two years ago that I first discoveredSalu Art.

Mesmerised by the aesthetic design and tex-ture, I knew I wanted a Salu Art wall print in ournew home.

Now it seems every western suburbs homeI review has this impressive Perth brand on itswalls, and it doesn’t stop there.

Salu Art have expanded their horizons toinclude lampshades, cushions, bed throws, tablerunners and pelmets.

Founded in 2003 by Western Australian

artists and textile designers Samantha de Souzaand Luke Matutinovich, Salu Art is a combina-tion of their names and phonetically an informalgreeting in French (Salut) where Samantha livedfor five years when she was young.

Using traditional hand screen-printingprocesses, Salu customise their award winningdesigns for residential and commercial interi-ors, offering their clients a highly personalised, versatile and creative service.

Originally inspired by native WA flora, theireclectic collection now includes stunning motifsof architectural scenes, iconic buildings, collagesexploring texture in objects and materials, andvintage and middle-eastern designs.

Inspired by colour and texture, Samanthasaid every Salu piece was carefully hand crafted, making each piece a bit special and unique.

“From hand drawing or cutting the stencilsto colour mixing and the traditional hand print-ing process, we make everything entirely our-selves and you can really see this in the qualityand texture,’’ she said.

“We offer selections from linens and heavycottons to luxurious satin and incredible silks, which really bring our designs to life, reflectlight and can create an ambience.”

What began as a modest operation in 2003in an old warehouse space in Osborne Park hasgrown into a booming business in MtHawthorn, with both national and internationalbuyers.

“When Salu began, we thought that our tar-get market would be interior designers andyoung, new couples or home buyers from late20s to 30s. But our client range is now betweenseven and 70 and our work is bought by thepublic, galleries, industry professionals such asarchitects, builders, designers and retail,’’Samantha said.

What began as a successful working relation-ship between Samantha and Luke quickly blos-somed into something more – in 2004 theymarried.

“Luke and I literally locked ourselves away inour studio for a year just focusing on art, design

and developing/formulating our business goalsto turn the dream into a reality,’’ Samantha said.

“Personally, there is nothing more satisfyingthan making something for someone that canbe used, and truly enjoyed by that person plusthere is another realm involved that is excitingto work with clients in the creative process.” ■

Textile designers extend their collection to lampshades, cushions, bed throws, table runners and pelmets, writes CARMELLE WILKINSON
