Quick Points• A consultant has been working

with staff to review processes and help create efficiencies.

• The Georgian 1 and Collingwood 2 tub room renovations are now complete, which included a new tub for Georgian 1.

• The Georgian 2 flooring project will begin soon.

• This year we will be renovating Georgian 1 Nursing Station. We are using the same plan used to renovate Georgian 2.

• The LED lighting upgrade will be starting shortly in the

resident rooms. • Smaller adjustable dining room

Celebration

Throughout the month of April, Sunset Manor celebrated our volunteers, which included an Appreciation Dinner April 27, in which John and Lesley McKay and Glen Haldane attended. Without our volunteers, many of our activity programs and functions would be much more difficult to undertake. In the year of 2016, our volunteers contributed a total of 3,040 unpaid hours; that is the equivalent to almost two full-time staff. Volunteers make a big difference in the lives of our residents and we are indeed grateful they chose to be among Sunset Manor’s key players. We could never thank our volunteers enough for the amazing work they do.

Our Commitment to YouA Message from Jane Sinclair, GM, Health & Emergency Services

e hope everyone is enjoying the spring sunshine and looking forward to the warmer

months of summer. We are excited to bring you the

most recent updates about what’s happening in your home, as we continue working hard to ensure the highest quality of care for our residents.

National Nursing Week is an event that is celebrated internationally each year to coincide with the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12.

The 2017 celebration of nurses were promoted under the theme “#YESThisIsNursing” and took place during the week of May 8 to May 14.

The County of Simcoe Long Term Care and Seniors Services department held various events and receptions throughout this week supporting and celebrating all of our staff for the wonderful care and services that they provide to our residents. Thank you.

June is Seniors Month, and 2017 marks the 33rd annual Seniors Month in Ontario.

The Ontario Seniors’ Secretariat has identified this year’s theme

as “Living Your Best Life”. It’s a fitting theme that encourages and supports seniors to be fully engaged in their lives.

It is the seniors of our communities who contributed their time and talents to guide and build what Simcoe County is today.

As a provider of services to seniors, the County of Simcoe is proud to honour seniors living in our communities across the County and particularly those living in our four long term care homes, along with our Senior Services and those participating in our adult day programs.

The Building an Age-Friendly Simcoe County - 2016 Community Needs Assessment – Executive Summary Report has been completed and can be viewed on our County of Simcoe Age-Friendly Community website.

This Executive Summary contains the background to the County of Simcoe’s efforts to create Age-Friendly Communities, compiles

and synthesizes the common themes from the extensive engagement studies held with our older adults, their families and the many agencies and organizations that support seniors, and provides highlights for areas of future consideration and development.

Overall, research indicates that older adults consider Simcoe County a positive place to live and feel that our communities are friendly, contain vast amount of green spaces and local trails, seniors feel respected, and really value the sense of safety and social rapport shared among the community. Though this study received feedback and recommendations in all eight community dimensions as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), themes for continued development across the County focused on four key areas: transportation, communication and information, affordability, and accessibility.

This year we mark Canada’s 150th Birthday and we’ll be celebrating at our homes.

Watch for events at your home in the coming months.
