Our four Homes embarked on an project with Tourism Simcoe County in 2018. The residents engaged in a weekly Barn Quilting Program, which also included an additional intergenerational program with local schools. A barn quilt is a large piece made of squares, rectangles, and triangles of painted wood that looks like a single quilt block and decorates the side of a barn. Look for them around Simcoe County. DIETARY UPDATESHigh five to the Dietary Department for going above and beyond this Chinese New Year! For the Year of the Pig they created a delicious menu featuring Spring rolls, wontons, chicken balls, steamed rice, Oriental vegetables, and fortune cookies!

Visitors are permitted to visit during an outbreak but please stay home if you are sick. Hand hygiene is vital, use the available alcohol-based hand rub throughout your visit; especially before entering and leaving a resident’s room. Limit your visit to one person and do not visit multiple residents.

A Message from Jane Sinclair, GM, Health & Emergency Services

We hope everyone had an enjoyable

old fashioned winter season and are enjoying the recent spring weather. We are excited to bring you the most recent updates about what’s happening in your home or residence, as we continue working diligently to ensure the highest quality of care for our residents.

The County of Simcoe is proud to announce the 2019 Simcoe County Age-Friendly Seniors Housing Grant Program once again this year. This program enables seniors to incorporate accessible, adaptable and inclusive designs for occupants 60+ into their living areas. The County has established an annual fund in the amount of $500,000 for eligible Seniors Housing Grant Program projects. Grant amounts will be distributed based on the number of applications received and ability to meet funding criteria. The deadline for grant submissions this year is May 15, 2019.

We are delighted to receive a grant from the Government of Canada New Horizon for Seniors Program Ontario, that will enable the Simcoe Cycling Without Age program to be established at Sunset Village in Collingwood and Georgian Village in Penetanguishene. Cycling Without Age programs have enhanced the lives of residents around the world through the simple act of sharing trishaw rides in the outdoors. The program will include one specialized trio bike per home, which will be used to take residents for rides to experience the surrounding Simcoe County trails. We hope to have the program up and running as soon as the bikes arrive in early May.

In November 2018, the County was notified of new funding to support Behavioural Support Services to residents living in long-term care homes in this region. This new funding will support an additional full-time Geriatric Psychiatrist, more registered nursing staff, and education and training for long-term care employees.

Hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter and look forward to bringing you more updates soon!

COMMITMENT OUR to YOUMediSystem Pharmacy, our new pharmacy, started in January 2019. This is great news, as we now have a pharmacist on-site weekly helping us to build a stronger medication management system. New Supervisor of Resident Care Leanna Gilbert is our floor level manager and first contact for staff. She brings six years of management experience and specializes in responsive behaviour and wound care.

New iPads are being installed for our PSWs so they are able to chart more easily, leaving more time for resident care.

eHealth Ontario has developed a solution to provide real-time access to medical information. ConnectingOntario, also referred to as eConnect, is an electronic health record portal that enables clinicians to share medical information on a safe, secure, and digital platform. This means that those in your circle of care will have better access to lab reports, ED visits, discharge summaries, allergy information, diagnostic imaging, and medication information.

Your health-care team, with your consent, will have all the necessary information to make informed decisions about your care. All the County of Simcoe long-term care homes will be adopting this program in 2019. You will see posters and brochures with more information shortly.
