NOVEMBER 2011 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 5

“The expressed purpose of the Residence Life Program here at Thaddeus Stevens College

of Technology is to foster self-development, good citizenship, and democratic principles.

These goals are accomplished through acquisition of decision-making skills on the part of

the student and through the emulation and promotion of values inclusive of respect for fel-

low students, honesty and the involvement of students in the residence hall governing

structure. The Residence Life Program also seeks to create an environment of understand-

ing and appreciation for the values of students from diverse backgrounds. It is through the

development of this kind of sensitivity that students grow personally, which impacts di-

rectly on other program purposes of citizenship and emulation of democratic principles set

forth in the College’s mission and purpose.

Thaddeus Stevens College Women’s Center

Recently I interviewed Ms. Brandy Stremba, the Women's Center Coordinator here at Thaddeus Stevens. She graduated from Millersville University with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Sociology. She is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Student Affairs from Kutztown University. Along with being the Women’s Center Coor-dinator here at Stevens, she works at Kutz-town University and takes night classes there as well. During the interview, I asked “What is the Women’s Center all about?” she re-plied, “We support advocacy for gender equality on campus, provide a place for women to hang out, watch T.V., do home-work, as well as to study prior to an upcom-ing test. Men on campus can also come to the Women’s Center. We also strive to keep women abreast of personal health is-sues, provide safe sex kits and extensive information on sex education. The Women’s Center also provides services for student mothers to help them with child care and grants. Most of the student body probably does not know about the services we offer here at the Women’s Center.” “How did you get the job?” I asked. “I got the job through the Millersville University Internship Program. When the position became available, I sent in my resume and I have been here at Steven’s now for one year.” Ms. Stremba also told me that the Women’s Center was instrumental in helping the college to raise a total of $850 for the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Awareness Coalition and our Homecoming King and Queen will be presenting the check to the organization.

Thaddeus Stevens Graveyard

Shreiner’s Cemetery North Mulberry and West Chestnut St.

Lancaster PA 17602 October 31, 2011

On Halloween, the Grave Keepers at the Shreiner’s Cemetery, where Thaddeus Stevens is buried, had a special night just for him. They dressed up in clothing popular during the Civil War Era, and had a mock funeral for the founder for our school. Of course candy was given out to both the parents and children. If any student has some free time, don’t hesitate to go pay Thad-deus Stevens a visit. I am sure he would appreciate it.

Life on Campus A Bulldog Tale

After a heavy night of drinking at the local bar, a drunk stumbles into a Catholic church and slowly makes his way into the confessional booth. There, the priest pa-tiently awaits the man to begin his confession.

After a few minutes of silence, the priest politely taps on the window… nothing. The priest taps again and this time clears his throat a bit… still nothing. At this point the priest begins to lose his patience and bangs on the window.

Finally the drunk yells out… “Ain’t no use knocking, there ain’t no paper over here either!”

A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar and asks if he could buy him a drink. “Why of course,” comes the reply.

The first man then asks: “Where are you from?”

“I’m from Ireland,” replies the second man.

The first man responds: “You don’t say, I’m from Ireland too! Let’s have another round to Ire-land.”

“Of course,” replies the second man.

Curious, the first man then asks: “Where in Ireland are you from?”

“Dublin,” comes the reply.

“I can’t believe it,” says the first man. “I’m from Dublin too! Let’s have another drink to Dublin.”

“Of course,” replies the second man.

Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks: “What school did you go to?”

“Saint Mary’s,” replies the second man, “I graduated in ’62.”

“This is unbelievable!”, the first man says. “I went to Saint Mary’s and I graduated in ’62, as well.”

About that time in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. “What’s been going on?” he asks the bartender.

“Nothing much,” replies the bartender. “The O’Kinly twins are drunk again.”

We Are the Champions

The Thaddeus Stevens College Bulldogs clinched their second consecutive Seaboard Championship Saturday by a score of 43-7 against Valley Forge Military College. This is the first time the football team has won back to back Seaboard Conference championships. Quarterback Frank Gaffney (Pine Grove) finished his career at Thaddeus Ste-vens College with 20 completions on 33 attempts for the game. He passed for over 300 yards in this Bulldog victory. The Bulldogs also ran the ball for nearly 300 yards. Defensively, the Bulldogs were strong as well. The team combined for 7 sacks and one fumble recovery. Justin Littlejohn (West Pittsburgh) led with 2 sacks on the day. Collectively, the team held the Trojans of Valley Forge to just 7 points overall and to a scoreless second half. The Bulldogs finish their season with a record of 7 -1 and were undefeated in the Seaboard Conference. This is the third conference championship under Head Coach Joe Wysock’s four year tenure as head coach. ~ Chad Baker

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is a well known holiday in America. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of the month of November. It has a very interesting history. Its origin can be traced back to the 16th century when the first thanksgiving dinner is said to have taken place. It is said that Pilgrims learned to grow corn, beans and pumpkins from the Indians, which helped all of them survive . In the au-tumn of 1621, they held a grand celebration where 90 people were invited including Indi-ans. The grand feast was organized to thank God for his favors. This communal dinner was popularly known as “The First Thanksgiving Feast”. There is however, no concrete evidence to prove that the dinner actually took place. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!!!
