Linkage with the productive sector

Science for society2

We are a Federal Goverment National Council of Science and Technology’s (CONACYT) public research center located in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, specialized in chemistry, polymers, materials, biotechnology, environment, natural resources and related disciplines. At CIQA we perform:

Basic and applied research. Experimental development. Technological innovation. Technical assistance. Specialized tests: chemical characterization, physicomechanical tests and analytical instrumentation. High-level specialized human resources training / education. Communication.

With a workforce of 83 researches, 65 of them members of the NationalSystem of Researchers (SNI),we publish 76 articles per year in high impact journals and we register around 20 patent applications to protect the technology developed in different research topics.

We work around 70 projects per year funded by external sources, some of them interinstitutional, as CIQA is linked with national and foreing institutions and companies. For example, we develop projects with the European Economic Community.and bilateral projects with Canada, Brazil, Spain and England. We also develop projects for Mexican companies through the Innovation and Fiscal Incentives Program of the Mexican Government.

We are equipped with high level infrastructure to develop research projects and to offer the most complete scientific, technological, educational, training and technical assistance portfolio services. Some of our lab tests are certified by Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación A.C. (ema).

Last year we were awarded by the Technology and Innovation National Award 2016, which is the maximum recognition granted by the Mexican Government toorganizations that have exemplary processes within a technology and innovationmanagement model.

Research and technological development

CIQA’s research is focused in new and better polymeric materials development for different plastics applications.

Research topics:

Polymer Synthesis. Polymerization Processes. Polymer Processing. Advanced Materials. Plastics in Agriculture.

The technological challenges in the research projects involve all the pastics value chain from the material synthesis, polymerization processes to theprocessing in a final product. We are improving and developing advanced materials to resolve problems or necesities in applications soch a packaging, coating, lightening materials, transportation and controlled release of drugs, medical devices, electronics, plastics auto parts, plastic recycling, applications of graphene materials, advanced materials for smart textiles, biocompatibility of advanced materials for prostheses and fabrics, among others.

With a focus on sustainable agricultural production, CIQA has developed plastics technology for protected agriculture.

CIQA has been recognized by the CONACYT’s National Lab Program with two labs:

National Laboratory of Graphene Materials. National Laboratory in Innovation and Development of Lightweight Materials for Automotive Industry

With the knowledge developed in the research projects, we have a technology portfolio available for transfer to industry with the purpose of offering value added to apply protected knowledge with patents in industrial process and products.
