The U170 is offered in a one-station kit, so it is perfect for the smallest businesses and home users. And with plug-and-play simplicity for up to 10 users per PC, it will also appeal to large schools and businesses.

U170 product overview:

The NComputing U170 kit enables users to dramatically cut computing costs by sharing the untapped power of existing computers. The U170 access device and NComputing vSpace software work together to efficiently harness excess computing capacity and enable multiple users to share a single computer. And each user gets the full performance and capability of a PC, including multimedia and video. Best of all, IT staff and end users do not need special training because the solution is easy to setup and is compatible with standard PC software.

Connect one user per kit or a total of 10 users per host machine

With the NComputing U170, each user still has a standard monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers (sold separately). However, instead of connecting directly to the PC, these peripherals connect to the U170 access device on their desk. These very small, solid-state devices connect with USB cables and optional USB 2.0 hubs to the shared PC. The distance between the access device and the shared computer can be a maximum of 20 meters (66 feet) following standard USB 2.0 specifications on cables and hubs. The U170 can also be easily attached and secured to the back of a display with the built-in VESA mount option.

The NComputing vSpace desktop virtualization software (included) divides the PC’s resources into independent virtual workspaces that give each user their own full PC experience. vSpace simplifies configuration by automatically assigning the keyboard, mouse, audio and any USB devices attached to each workstation. There is even an auto-login feature that can be set to automatically login a user making the U170 a great product for kiosks, schools, kids, and digital signage applications.

Choosing the right NComputing Product:The U170 does not replace any existing NComputing products. Both the X-series and L-series products have unique deployment advantages that make them the right choice for customers.

The NComputing U170 is a great choice for customers who may require higher resolutions or convenient USB peripheral support. They may also appreciate the simple installation that doesn’t require opening a PC. Customers who may have looked at L-series products in the past to attach just a few desktops in close proximity to the PC will find the U170 simpler to deploy with better multimedia performance.

By delivering all of the key components (hardware and software), only NComputing delivers a high performance desktop virtualization solution at the lowest possible cost.

New software features

The U170 uses a specialized version of vSpace SW designed for the most non-technical of users. Instead of the traditional vSpace console that an administrator would use to view and manage virtual desktops, vSpace for U170 contains a simple system tray menu on each virtual desktop and the host machine. This system tray menu is a convenient place to enable users to:

Product registration process

Registration is quick and easy and simply requires the administrator or user to fill out a form and submit it from the host computer if it is connected to the internet.

If the shared computer is not connected to the Internet, we offer an offline registration option. With offline registration, the same form is filled out, but instead of automatically sending the registration data over the Internet, a file is created. This file can then be copied to a disk-on-key or other medium, transferred to another computer, and then e-mailed to NComputing. NComputing will return a file that can then be copied back to the original shared computer to activate it.

Note that all U170 kits must be registered to enable full functionality. Prior to registration, the software and hardware will function for 30 days, but sessions are limited to one hour. After one hour, the user sessions will be logged out and the shared computer must be rebooted to restart the sessions.

Hardware features

The U170 is the first USB virtual desktop product in the industry. Using USB to VGA technology, NComputing has revolutionized virtual desktop computing by making it easier than ever to install and configure virtual desktop stations.

Graphics and video performance

The U170 is effectively a graphics card attached to the PC by a USB cable. The capabilities of the U170 enable native PC performance for 2D applications including full-motion, full-screen video, flash animation, and smooth scrolling.

The U170 also supports a wide range of resolutions from 640x480 to 1600x1200 (4:3) or 1680x1050 (16:9) and 32 bit color depth.

10 users per host

The U170 connects to the host over a USB 2.0 connection. This enables multiple U170 virtual desktops to be supported by one PC by using additional ports on the PC or using a powered USB hub. It is important to note that each U170 requires approximately 400mA from the USB port, so using multiple U170 devices over a non-powered USB hub will likely not operate. Also, the USB protocol allows only 5 meters per USB cable and a maximum of 5 hubs in a chain. Due to these restrictions, the theoretical limit for the distance between a U170 and the host is 20 meters.

Low power

Each U170 device draws less than 2 watts. This allows the U170 to be powered with over the USB connection. Note that if a user wants to attach additional USB peripherals (beyond the keyboard and mouse) to the U170, a powered hub should be used. This is a convenient option when mounting the U!70 to a display as the user will have an easily accessible hub to connect and disconnect peripherals.

Winning design

The U170 offers a low-footprint design that can be easily attached to a VESA compliant display using the integrated mount. There is also a security slot placed on the unit where a small security cable may be inserted to prevent theft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many U170 access devices may be attached to one computer?A: NComputing will support up to 9 additional stations plus the host (10 users total)

Q: Does the U170 replace the X350 or X550?A: No. The X350 and X550 will have cost advantages for users who want to maximize the number of users per PC. The X350 and X550 offer similar multimedia performance and features

Q: Why is there a one-hour time limit on sessions prior to registering vSpace?A: This ensures that customers register and activate their software, and also protects the software from being illegally copied

Q: What if my customers don’t have internet access, how can they register?A: They can use offline registration which requires them to e-mail a file to NComputing (if the customer does not have e-mail access, then the reseller must register for them)

Q: Why are there only 2 USB ports on the U170?A: The U170 is powered through the USB connection to the PC and is therefore designed to support a keyboard and mouse without additional power. If additional peripherals are required, inexpensive powered hubs are available globally. peripherals attached downstream of a U170 will be assigned to the user of that U170 device.

Q: What is the maximum distance that a U170 may be deployed?A: Using USB 2.0 compliant cables and hubs, a U170 device may be deployed approximately 20 meters. As USB power current will drop over that distance, a powered USB hub should be used immediately upstream from the U170 device at that length.

Q: Where is the management console?A: The U170 uses simplified management making it easy to deploy and operate. There is a system tray menu on the host session and U170 station sessions that enables auto-login settings, and display settings. Other advanced options are available to administrators through registry settings documented in the user’s guide.
