Writing Your First Proposal
• Begin early - three to six months is not too early
• Be innovative—if your idea isn’t brand new, find an angle
that is
• Do your homework, so that you know where your project fits
and you can find your own niche
• Call a program officer, summarize your project and get
feedback on it
![Page 10: Research & Sponsored Projects 101 Office of Research & Sponsored Projects University of Texas at El Paso September 13th, 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de75503460f94ae10ce/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Writing Your First Proposal
• Contact ORSP as early as possible to start working on your
budget and deal with things like Human Subjects
• Follow agency guidelines to the letter
• Write clearly, succinctly, and correctly -graphics help
• Provide enough detail so that your reader knows what you
are talking about
![Page 11: Research & Sponsored Projects 101 Office of Research & Sponsored Projects University of Texas at El Paso September 13th, 2007](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062716/56649de75503460f94ae10ce/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Writing Your First Proposal
• Give yourself time for someone to read and critique
your proposal. Revise on the basis of that input
• Do not rush the submission project. Electronic
submission may make things slower, not faster
• If you don’t get funded, make sure you get your reviews
and use that input in developing your next proposal
