Effect of Bulb Spacing and Size on Growth and Flowering

of Chincherinchee (Ornithogalum thyrsoides Jacq.)

Abstract The present investigation entitled “Effect of bulb spacing and sizes on growth and flowering of Ornithogalum thyrsoides Jacq.” was carried out at the Research Farm of the

Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of

Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H. P.), India during the year 2009–2010. An experiment comprising of four spacings and three sizes of bulbs with three replications

was conducted using randomized block design (factorial) in the field. In this experiment,

the vegetative growth parameters viz. plant height (47.81 cm, 48.11 cm), stem length (25.37 cm, 26.09 cm), number of leaves per plant (17.74, 14.27), leaf area (25.21 cm

2,

26.13 cm2) ; the flowering parameters namely, number of florets/stem (53.76, 55.38), cut

stem diameter (5.22 mm and 5.30 mm), cut flower weight (17.02 g, 17.26 g), vase life

(14.52 days, 14.86 days), duration of flowering (19.86 days, 21.26 days ); the bulb

production parameters like number of bulbs per plant (2.38, 1.99), weight of bulb (8.94 g, 8.88 g), size of bulb (2.88 cm, 2.72 cm) were found to be maximum in bulbs of size

2.4–2.8 cm and density of 30 bulbs/m2, respectively over other treatments. Plant spread

(23.78 cm, 23.61 cm) and size of florets (1.76 cm, 1.78 cm) was larger in bulb size of 2.4–2.8 cm and 25 bulbs/m

2 density, respectively over the control.

Abstract The investigation consists of 3 genotypes (AAIMS 1, AAIMS 2 and J1006) of maize,

obtained from SHIATS and P.A.U. The experiment was conducted during kharif 2010 in

randomized block design having three replications. The data were recorded on 31

characters to study the per se performance of phenological, qualitative and quantitative

traits of fodder maize. Analysis of variance revealed that there was considerable variation available for most of the characters studied. Per se performance of AAIMS 1

was found the best for fodder yield and yield related components followed by AAIMS 2 and J1006. Genotype AAIMS1 was found to be the best for fodder yield and its

components as it showed highest mean value for most of the above characters. However,

for grain yield and yield-related components, characters genotype AAIMS1 was found superior as it depicted highest mean value for early plant vigour, plant height, ear length

and ear width exhibited by genotype AAIMS 1 (43.62 cm, 239.33 cm, 17.32 cm and 14.96

cm).The highest grain and fodder yielding genotype was AAIMS 1 (43.92 q and 439.92 q).

Measuring Technical Efficiency of T. Aman Rice and

Potato in Bangladesh

Abstract The study was undertaken to analyze technical efficiency of transplanted aman (T. aman)

rice and potato cultivation in some selected areas of Bogra district of Bangladesh. Data

were collected from 100 T. Aman rice and potato farmers from two villages of Sonatola upazila. Random sampling techniques were used and then data were analyzed by using

tabular and statistical techniques. Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function

was fit to determine the technical efficiency of T. Aman rice and potato growers. The survey data revealed that average size of farm holding was 1.25 acre for rice growers

and 0.64 acre for potato growers. The sample farmers were found growing rice over an area of 3.30 acre and potato over 2.02 acre. These sample farmers obtained an average

yield of 0.264 ton/acre of rice and 0.440 ton/acre of potato. A majority of the rice and

potato growers belonged to middle age group of 35–50 years.

Study of Genetic Variability on Rice Hybrids

(Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract The present study was carried out in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology & Science, Allahabad, during

Kharif-2010, entitled “Study of Genetic Variability on Rice Hybrids (Oryza sativa. L.).”

The objective of the study was assessing comparative performance of quality. The mean sum of square due to genotype was shown statistically significant for all characters. The

twenty-five rice hybrids were evaluated by following characters, viz., days to 50%

flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of tillers per hill, number of effective tillers per hill, number of spikelets per panicle, panicle length, flag leaf length, flag leaf

width, biological yield per hill, harvest index, test weight, grain yield (q/h), hulling%, milling%, head rice recovery%, length of kernel rice, breadth of kernel rice, L/B ratio,

grain type, etc. The genotype UR22 was found to be the best for mean performance of

grain yield and spikelets per panicle. These characters should be given top priority during selection of genotype for higher yield and quality in rice.

Variability and Assessment of Seed Quality Parameters of

Wheat (Triticum aestivum l.) Germplasm

Abstract Thirty wheat genotypes with two checks were evaluated for variability and quality

parameters. The trial has been conducted in a randomized block design having four

replications. A wide range of variability and high heritability for all the traits has been observed in trial. The study revealed high estimates of GCV and PCV for a number of

tillers per plant and yield per plant. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was recorded for a number of tillers per plant and 1000-seed weight. Using D

2 analysis,

thirty genotypes of wheat were grouped into six clusters. The cluster III consisted of

maximum number of genotypes. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster III and cluster VI. Genotypes IBW-1129, IBW-1036, IBW-1033, IBW-1164 and

ESW-15 were found to the best genotype in Allahabad agro-climatic conditions, based on mean performance. Contribution (%) towards the total divergence was maximum through

1000-seed weight followed by biological yield, and days to 50% flowering. Five

promising wheat genotypes along with checks were used for seed quality assessment. The analysis of variance for seven characters showed significant differences for all

quantitative characters except germination percentage. According to the mean

performance, a wide range of variation was found for most of the characters. The assessment of seed quality of promising genotypes revealed that varieties IBW-1129,

IBW-1036 and IBW-1033 showed high seed vigor index and protein content than checks. Therefore, these genotypes should be given top priority in breeding programs.
