Slavery

• Started in ancient time• Lagos, Portugal, was the first slave market

that sells imported African slaves • Brought from Northern America• Southern white skinned people brought

and owned black skinned slaves• Slaves obeyed every command given

• Both includes racial discrimination against Blacks

• Blacks are wrongly accused in the book• Blacks are ill-treated and must obey the

instructions of the whites

The Civil War

• Happened during April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865• Southern States( Southern United States

– Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, west Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland and Delaware.

• Abraham Lincoln proclaimed war against the southern states.

• Fought for rights and freedom of black slaves.• Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of

Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House

• Atticus, a white fought for the rights of Tom Robinson, a black despite their different races. Atticus did not discriminate Tom Robinson but helped him

Jim Crow Laws• Song name, not a person• Local and State laws that were used in

America during 1876 to 1965• Separated the whites from the blacks• Whites were given advantages in education,

work, etc while Blacks were unfairly treated and were very unhappy

• Tom Robinson was accused by a white for raping and Tom Robinson lost the case although it was clear that he was wrongly accused

• Started in 1950• Political movement of equality before the

laws, improving legal rights • Chicano Movement

– Sought political empowerment and social inclusion of the Mexicans

• American-Indian Movement – Violent protest gatherings resulting in 2

deaths.

• President John F Kennedy supported it• Outcome is African Americans are as

equal as whites

• Relation to book• Atticus fought for Tom Robinson’s rights,

although they were of different races and did not discriminate him

Montgomery Bus Boycott and Scottsboro trials

• Both fought for the rights of blacks because the transport system was biased towards the whites

• In Scottsboro trials, a black man was accused of rape that he did not commit

• Similar to the book under same conditions, both black men were accused of rape they did not do.
