RESEARCH OFFICE REVIEW

Professor Mary Kelly, DVC-RDI, has initiated an external review of the Research Office to ensure the functions and resourcing of the Research Office support a strategic approach to research, and future proof for growth in research capacity at CSU. It has been a number of years since the Research Office was reviewed, and in that time there have been many changes in research and research training, and a high level of engagement from governments at all levels in this area.

The overall objectives of the Review are to develop a proposal to support efficient and co-ordinated service for the University by:

Reviewing the current functions and services provided by the Research Office and their alignment with strategic plans, and external requirements

Identifying gaps in the range of services and expertise provided

Identifying any barriers preventing optimum service delivery

Reviewing the communications with Divisions, Faculties and Centres in terms of identifying options to enhance service delivery

Identifying an appropriate structure to ensure effective co-ordination and delivery of all services

Identifying a resourcing model that enables efficient and effective delivery of services

Any Division, Office or individual is welcome to provide a written submission. Written submissions will be accepted until 10 May 2018, and should be forwarded to Tracey Bentley [email protected] and please limit written submissions to 3 pages.

Best wishes Rosemary Adams Acting Director, Research

HDR Matters

- The Census date for the 201830 session has passed and we have 69 HDR candidates who accepted offers to commence in 201830, which is up slightly on last year. Following the scholarship application round held late last year, CSU was able to offer more HDR scholarships than ever before. 69 candidates have accepted scholarships, with 55 candidates having commenced their scholarships to date. We look forward to the remainder of our scholarship candidates commencing in 201860.

- Theses lodged on or by the 201830 census date have been sent to Examiners around the nation and

internationally. The removal of the requirement to submit bound hard copy theses has made the submission and examination process much simpler.

- HDR candidates hoping to graduate from the August ceremony in Sydney are reminded to please

register your intention with Student Administration via [email protected]. HDR candidates approved to graduate will have until Friday 20 July to upload their final digital thesis into CRO to meet graduation processing deadlines – more information about this will be provided to individual HDR candidates at the time a candidate receives their “Approved to Graduate” letter.

- The biannual (post-census date) distribution of Operating Funding for scholarship recipients has

been completed for Session 1 201830. Program codes have been topped up for existing students and commencing students now have access to their first round of funding for research-related expenses. For further information on how these funds can be used please refer to the Operating Fund Guidelines.

Professional Development

‘Granted’ Program

Write a stand-out research grant proposal.

Ahead of the deadline. With expert mentoring and strategic advice while you write.

And a tribe to support you.

‘Granted’ is an online course in grant writing and development, being offered for the first time to CSU researchers in 2018. The program guides participants through the process of writing a draft grant proposal, with personal support, mentoring, and strategic advice by a dedicated facilitator. Participants will complete six course modules over two months, commencing 30th July 2018. There are limited places in this course (10) and applications close Friday, 1 June 2018. Further information regarding this program, eligibility criteria, and how to Apply. And the Expression of Interest form. Please direct any enquiries to Dr Alison Matthews, Manager Research Professional Development on 02 6051 9429 or email [email protected].

Fulbright Scholarships – applications now open

Applications are now open for the internationally-renowned Fulbright Program, with all postgraduate students, PhD researchers, academics, and professionals being eligible to undertake research or study in the United States. The Fulbright Program is the largest educational exchange program in the world and aims to develop long-lasting, productive bilateral collaborations and cultural understanding between Australia and the United States. The Australian-American Fulbright Commission has launched a new program of scholarships for Australian applicants. The Awards for 2018 include a new Fulbright Future Scholarship to fund projects that seek to advance cutting-edge applied scientific research, kick start innovative business collaborations that foster the creation of new jobs, and further the development of impact-driven emergent technologies. Fulbright Scholars receive generous living and travel allowances as well as other entitlements according to the award.

The Fulbright program holds clear links to the CSU Research Narrative, and will be of interest to all CSU researchers striving to improve the health, well-being, and prosperity of Australians through their research. This is a unique and prestigious award that CSU staff have had past success in securing. The Fulbright Alumni Advisers for CSU are available to share their exchange experiences and support prospective applicants. “Being a Fulbright Scholar here at the Rochester Institute of Technology has been the most exciting experience of my life. The experience has helped me to grow so much as a researcher, as a person, and as an advocate for cultural understanding between people with diverse experiences. Being a Fulbright Scholar, and everything that has happened as a result of this opportunity, has changed my world and my career into something bigger and better than I could ever have imagined” – Dr Kate Crowe, 2016 Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar. More information? There will be an information session for CSU staff by Fulbright Ambassador, Professor Rod Hill and the Australian-American Fulbright Commission Scholarship Manager, Tara Hawley on Wednesday, 16th May at 1.30pm. Please register your interest for this session on the Research Professional Development Calendar. For further information about Fulbright Scholarships and the application process, contact the Office of Global Engagement and Partnerships [email protected].

So much PD on offer in May …

What sessions are you registered for? The Calendar has been updated to the end of July, here are a few …

Working with the Media On the 10th of May, Wes Ward is hosting an introductory media awareness workshop for all researchers covering ways to strategically and successfully work with the media in a research context. Communicating research findings to potential users outside the academic community, whether in government, business, the third sector or the general public, should be an essential element in most researchers lives. This workshop will help you with how you can engage with the media in order to have a greater impact and will provide information about: what makes a good news story, working effectively with journalists, and giving TV and radio interviews.

Making the Most of Focus Group Interviews On the 22nd May, Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen from Adroit research is facilitating this workshop. Focus group interviews are an effective way to understand how groups of people construct meaning and to uncover the context of people’s beliefs and behaviour. However focus groups offer special

Page 5: RESEARCH OFFICE BULLETIN - csu.edu.au · meet graduation processing deadlines ... HDR candidates at the time a candidate receives their “Approved to ... support you in developing

5

challenges in the selection of participants, moderation of discussion and recording both individual and group interaction data. This workshop looks at some examples of focus group interviews to understand how to avoid some common problems and obtain the greatest benefits.

Systematic Reviews—Who What Why When and How On the 23rd May Maggie Watson is discussing Systematic Reviews and the Who, What, Why, When and How. It’s for HDR students and researchers and explains how a systematic review is an appraisal and synthesis of primary research papers using a rigorous and clearly documented methodology in both the search strategy and the selection of studies. This minimises bias in the results and allows the review to be published as a rigorous and reproducible body of work. While systematic reviews are based on medical methodologies, there is still scope and potential to use a systematic review in any field. This session seeks to introduce the concept of systematic reviews, the methodology and, most importantly, the necessary reporting standards that allow for publication. Reporting standards for environmental research is used an example (ROSES Reporting standards for systematic evidence synthesis).

Data Visualisation On the 24th of May, Gail Fuller from SPAN is running Data Visualisation. At this session you will gain practical knowledge regarding how to access ABS data and data from other important data sets and learn more about the CSU support services available to you in this endeavour.

The Conversation, what you need to know On the 29th of May, Sunny Creagh from the Conversation will be sharing a presentation to cover: What is The Conversation, Why write for The Conversation, What's a

story and what's not, and How to pitch your ideas and modify your writing style for a general audience, plus there will be a great Q+A section The Conversation is an independent source of news and views, sourced from the academic and research community and delivered direct to the public. Their team of professional editors work with university, CSIRO and research institute experts to unlock their knowledge for use by the wider public. There are 5.2 million users, reaching 35 million people, having 33,000 registered authors of which 55% are contacted by media to share their stories further. Are you writing for the Conversation yet?

To register for any of these sessions and to see what else is available, see the Research Professional Development Calendar.

The AgriTech Incubator

In mid-2016, the NSW Department of Industry commenced a two year partnership with each NSW University and CSIRO to drive innovation and grow jobs in NSW, with a particular focus on small to medium enterprises. The program is called Boosting Business Innovation. With the $1M funding provided, CSU has established 3 programs: 1. The AgriTech Incubator. Led by Professor John Mawson, the AgriTech Incubator aims to spark innovation and economic development in the Riverina-Murray region by supporting the development of start-up companies and facilitating innovation within small-to medium-sized enterprises (SME) by providing access to University expertise and facilities. A program of gender equity initiatives dedicated to improving women’s participation in ‘tech’ will also be delivered. The AgriTech Incubator specifically encourages start-ups seeking to leverage new technologies from ‘farm to fork’ but is open to participation by any ‘tech-enabled’ regional start-up. The Incubator is funded by the NSW Department of Industry with significant additional funding from Charles Sturt University.

Page 10: RESEARCH OFFICE BULLETIN - csu.edu.au · meet graduation processing deadlines ... HDR candidates at the time a candidate receives their “Approved to ... support you in developing

10

A total of 16 start-ups have been supported through the Incubator Program. Cohort 2, recently completed the Program on 26th March 2018 pitching their business idea to invited guests at the AgriTech Incubator. The participant’s business ideas ranged from the development of apps and software platforms that support producers and agricultural suppliers, and developing new food products to diversify farming income, to a financial support service and new methods for enhancing travellers’ health.

Cohort 2 participant and founder of Sprout Ed, Jenny Rolfe-Wallace said "The CSU AgriTech Incubator provided an opportunity to meet with other entrepreneurs in the early stages of their business ventures. We were able to share our journeys, ideas, thoughts, questions and experiences in a supportive environment, and the weekly meetings helped create accountability for our progress throughout the program. This was important for me, because I had been working on my business idea for years but had felt unable to take the next step. At each stage of the program, I was able to address and

overcome some of the barriers that had kept my business concept from becoming a reality, and the positive relationship built with my mentor was pivotal in this process. By the end of the eight weeks, I was not only ready to present my pitch, but put the initial phase of my business plan into action." Sprout Ed helps people build financial knowledge, confidence and empowerment through five key operations. Sprout Ed is hosting a series of events titled ‘Women, Wealth and Wine’ during 2018, with the next event scheduled for 9th May at the Pavilion Hotel Wagga. Based in the refurbished Building 6 on the Wagga Wagga campus, the Incubator is now available for use as a co-working and event space. Please contact project officer Siobhain Howard if you are interested in this opportunity. Contact: E: [email protected]. Photos: Jenny Rolfe-Wallace, founder of Sprout Ed, ‘Pitching’ her business idea. 2. CenWest Innovate Aims to support the development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Central West NSW, to encourage interaction between small to medium-sized enterprises and the University, to support business innovation, and to encourage jobs growth in the region. CenWest has run many workshop and events attracting local businesses keen to develop. Its second iteration of the six month Next Stage Growth Program has just commenced.

3. Walan Mayinygu Is an Indigenous Entrepreneurship pop-up hub bringing business masterclasses, practical workshops and networking opportunities to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and businesses across New South Wales. The roaming Pop Up Hubs overcome geographical isolation to provide powerful spaces for individuals and communities to generate their own business ideas. Hubs have been run in Dubbo, Albury and Port Macquarie. The next hub is running in Lismore in mid-May. The Department of Industry has given a further $500,000 funding for an additional 2 years.

Captured

On Tuesday 15th May 2018, the CAPTURED exhibition will open at the CSU Regional Archives in Wagga. The opening will commence at 11.00am in the Archives foyer.

Mr Martyn Killion (Manager, Public Access, State Archives NSW) will officially open the exhibition, and Dr Penny Stannard (Managing Curator, Exhibitions, State Archives NSW) will deliver a presentation entitled Capturing the Captured – stories from the exhibition. CAPTURED – Portraits of Crime 1870-1930 is an exhibition produced by State Archives NSW that explores the stories of men, women and children who were incarcerated in NSW gaols from 1870 to 1930. The exhibition engages with photographic portraits and descriptions of prisoners sourced from the State Archives Collection of Gaol Photographic Description Books. These historic records have been digitised, and interpreted through research within and beyond the archives to illuminate events and contexts that led ordinary people to commit crimes. But as the ordinary unfolds, so, too, does the extraordinary. The exhibition’s set of compelling case studies of individuals captured in the criminal justice system as a result of choice or circumstance provides a unique perspective that makes a new contribution to the history of NSW. To compliment this touring exhibition the CSU Regional Archives will also display a selection of archival material. These items, drawn from the CSURA collection, will highlight untold stories of local prisoners. For catering purposes, please RSVP to 02 6933 4590 or email [email protected] by 5.00pm on Friday 11th May 2018.
