How the Unisa Library assists CAES and CSET students in their studies
About the Library
As the largest academic library in Africa, we are also one of the best-endowed with information resources, information technology and expert staff.
The Unisa Library came into being in 1946 when Unisa introduced distance learning as a mode of tuition. The last 50 years have been a period of rapid growth, with the printed book collection now totalling over 1.5 million items. In addition, we stock over 300 000 other items as well as 4 000 current periodical titles.
We subscribe to an increasing number of electronic journals (e-journals). Both the e-journals and the growing collection of electronic books (e-books) are available to Unisa students and staff online 24/7 via the internet, regardless of the user’s physical location.

facilitate self-sufficiency, for example Library Catalogue Basic Library Skills, Advanced Library Skills, myUnisa, and MyLife (student email accounts)
• Create awareness and promote the use of the library's information resources and services
• Provide a general information service and literature searches to all clients
• Provide library access to prospective M and D students who want to register with UNISA

•The online literature search request service is delivered by the Information Search Librarians Team to all Unisa staff and students.•The Information Search Librarians Team is a dedicated, experienced and committed group of professional information specialists. We will help you find quality information from Unisa’s impressive array of electronic resources.•The following services are offered to all registered Unisa students and to all Unisa staff:
– literature searches– answers to short reference questions– support for independent use of Library
•Requests for help vary from the shortest reference query to an in-depth subject-specific literature search.

How to download recommended material from the e-Reserves
•Go to http://encore.unisa.ac.za, type your course code in the search block (In the left frame you will see your recommended material displayed)•Click on Electronic Reserves to see a list of articles/extracts to view or download•The documents in the E-Reserves are in PDF Format and you will need the Adobe Reader to view these documents. The Reader can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.adobe.com.
Request recommended books•Go to http://encore.unisa.ac.za and type your course code into the search block (see the example below):•In the left frame you will see your recommended material displayed•Click on Recommended Books to view the list •Request the item(s) you need.
