Supporting researchers to secure external funding for research
projects in line with the University’s strategy
RDF Strategic Awards• Up to £25k • Ideally inter- or multi-disciplinary projects • Should relate to University Strategy• Must lead on to future bid(s) for external funding• Open to academic staff from all faculties• Annual end of May deadline for activity from 1 August - 31 July

Overall the project must be; innovative, have a strategic focus, and have long-term potential
Emphasis on partnership building activities;- inter- and multi-disciplinary research- developing PhD student exchange schemes- building links with industry

External Funding OpportunitiesExamples of schemes promoted in 2011-12
India: UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). Current phase will run until 2016. Funds research collaborations, development of joint programmes, staff exchanges. 3 successful bids in 2011
Brazil: Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras). Current phase will run until 2015. Funds Brazilian students study abroad (UG, PhD), Full-time PhD. Also opportunities for UK Visiting Researchers. 1 Visiting Researcher award in 2012
Turkey: UK-HE Partnerships. Funds collaborative partnerships between the UK and Turkey (and industry), initially in key areas of: Agriculture, Energy, Food security, Health, and ICT. 1 successful bid in 2012

What do we fund?• IAS supports a cluster of funding initiatives which are
directed towards achieving Strategy 2015• Designed to support research that might not have
clearly defined research outcomes yet (so would not be eligible to apply for external funding) but are likely to be in the future (given the right support…)
• IAS offer a number of schemes designed to encourage: – testing out new ideas– Interdisciplinary approaches or interdisciplinarity– building embryonic external grant bids
