Research ReviewHorses and Humans Research Foun-dation is the only organization ded-icated solely to funding research to support the equine-assisted activities and therapies field. Since its found-ing, HHRF has invested $400,000 in professional research efforts led by eight research teams in the United States, Canada and Germany. TWO RESEARCH GRANTS AWARDED IN 2013

The first, awarded in Spring, is ti-tled “Effects of equine assisted ac-tivities on PTSD symptoms, coping self-efficacy, emotion regulation, and social engagement in military vet-erans”. Principal Investigator is Re-becca A. Johnson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor and Director, Research Center for Human Animal Interac-tion, University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine. The study uses a randomized experimental design with repeated measures and a wait-list control group to study 40 previously deployed U.S. mili-tary veterans by testing efficacy of a 6-week human-horse interaction and systematic therapeutic horseback riding program in: decreasing PTSD symptoms, increasing coping self- ef-ficacy, emotion regulation, and social engagement.

The second, awarded in Fall, and the eighth one awarded by HHRF in seven years, was to the Cum-mings School of Veterinary Med-icine at Tufts University for the study, “Effects of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy on Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Male Youth.” The $50,000 award is being used to study how children and adolescents with post-traumatic stress respond to equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP). Led by Principal Investiga-tor Megan Mueller, Ph.D., research assistant professor at the Cummings School and a developmental psy-chologist, and co-investigator Les-lie McCullough, Ph.D., MSSW, LCSW, of Washburn University, the

research team will examine 60 boys between the ages of 10 and 18 with post-traumatic stress. Specifically, they will measure post-traumatic stress symptoms before, during and after exposure to a combination of EFP and traditional therapy, as well as the effect of the human-animal bond during this program.PUBLICATION ANNOUNCE-MENT

The HHRF grant review process strongly emphasizes the importance of peer-reviewed journal publication for projects it funds.

Late in 2013, two Scientific Ad-visory Council members, Heather F. Ajzenman and Tim L. Shurtleff, along with their colleague John W. Standeven, published a study, “Effect of Hippotherapy on Motor Control, Adaptive Behaviors, and Participa-tion in Children With Autism Spec-trum Disorder: A Pilot Study,” in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, November/December 2013 (vol. 67 no. 6 p. 653-66). The pilot study for this work, entitled “Ef-fect Of Hippotherapy On Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders,” was funded by HHRF and conduct-ed by Tim Shurtleff.

The objective of this investiga-tion was to determine whether hip-

potherapy increased function and participation in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The authors concluded, “These re-sults suggest that hippotherapy has a positive influence on children with ASD and can be a useful treatment tool for this population.”

SEED FUNDING FOR A SEC-OND AWARD TOWARD PTSD/TBI RESEARCH

Thanks to the Caisson Pla-toon Equine Assisted Programs’ (CPEAP) continued generosity, a second research fund has been ini-tiated to support research regard-ing the impact of EAA/T on mil-itary veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury.

HHRF’s goal is to raise $70,000 to support another call for propos-als towards veterans research (the first was in 2012 and was initi-ated by a seed contribution from CPEAP). It is anticipated that the call for proposals will be placed in 2014.

GRANT AWARD PERIODS EX-TENDED TO 1.5 YEARS

It has been an ongoing challenge for HHRF-funded studies to complete projects within the one year period originally required. The HHRF Scientific Commit-tee, along with the Board Quali-ty Assurance Committee and the HHRF staff made the decision in 2013 to allow 1.5 years for study completion of HHRF-funded projects.

and Cheese Reception was fol-lowed by a facility tour, and a keynote presentation by Dr. Rustin Moore.

David and Barbara Roux also

co-hosted a reception for HHRF at their magnificent St. Bride’s Farm in Upperville, Virginia on October 3. More than 100 peo-ple gathered to learn more about HHRF research, tour the fabulous facilities and meet new friends. The evening’s activities also included an exhibition by one of the St. Bride’s Farm show jumpers, an Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) demonstration conducted by Don-na Maglio, LCSW and Pam Mil-ner of the Spirit Program and a presentation by Col. Louise (Mi-chelle) Bryce.

Horses and Humans Research Foundation had a suc-cessful year during 2013. Revenue in the form of contri-butions and grants increased about 20% over 2012. As a result of the increase, HHRF awarded two grants in 2013 in comparison to no grant awards in 2012. The Board elected to make an additional effort in fundraising and expanded management and staff to have a positive im-pact during the year and beyond. Expenses were closely monitored and stayed directly in line with the budget. Fundraising is an ongoing concern for the foundation and for 2014 we will continue being diligent about mon-itoring expenses and expanding our fundraising efforts. We do not have an endowment that provides meaning-ful income at this time so it is critical to expand and diversify our donor base to ensure continued funds for this critical research. -Cynthia Ruiz, Treasurer

“I don’t believe that any of us will argue with the fact that valid, published re-search is the means through which our profession will gain credibility and visibil-

ity. For programs struggling with financial resources, [research] will be an im-mense help in approaching funders, seeking grants and promoting our programs.”

Research ResolveRESEARCH OPENS DOORS TO THE FUTURE. Research is critical to help develop evidence-based cur-ricula to best address rehabilitation challenges. It is also a necessary part of convincing third party funders to support these programs. Not all of us can conduct re-search but we can ALL support it. Without that fund-ing, many people in need won’t have access to EAA.HHRF launched “Research Resolve 2013” as a way for all who are committed to the future of EAA to become

personally involved. Exceptional leadership and long-range vision were demonstrated by the following pro-grams and individuals who invested in research in order to: • Ensure the development of evidence-based practic-es; • Influence professional and community perceptions; • Rally support for the field.

Only research can direct efficient and effective change to EAA. It is a huge job. No one person or entity can do it, but if we all do our share - even if it is in a small way - EAA’s progressive future can be assured. We offer our sincere gratitude to the following HHRF “Research Resolve 2013” Sponsors:
