Research

Barbara Given, PhD, RN, FAAN

This past month we held special celebrations including the opening of the first wet lab for Dr. Schutte in CON and a new grant for Dr. Horodynski. This month we feel the excitement of researchers with the announcement that they could apply for stimulus money for their research. This is an exciting time and the buzz in the hallways and meeting rooms brings new energy. We have two students working to submit NRSAsin April. These will be the first NRSAs in quite some time for the college. The involvement with faculty and with colleaguesaround campus is good to see as new interdisciplinary research teams are being built. This interaction among the disciplines can only improve our work. Meanwhile, we wait for some new scores from faculty grants being reviewed.

Letter from a colleague:

Dear CON Colleagues,

Thank you very much for your participation in our recent Lab Open House! We are very excited to be up and running in the lab. And I very much appreciate your interest in and support of our research!

You were great sports in our assorted open house competitive events! You will see that I decided to award only one prize per person. And, in one event, I established a novice and expert category. Please join me in congratulating the winners of these excitingevents (their Sparty Bucks are on the way)!

The TipBox Derby (fastest time to fill a 96 well box with pippetors tips) Novice category winner: Erin Johnson (CON) Expert category winner: Ellen Wilch (Friderici Lab, MMG)

Know Your Eppendorf Tubes (closest guess to the number of eppendorf tubes in the beaker, without going over; Actual number = 126) Erin Johnson (125) and Marilou Clary (123) made great guesses. But because they each won another event, the prize goes to the next closest guess: Georgia Padonu (111) (CON)

Know Your Small Volumes (closest estimation of the volume of liquid in a set of eppendorf tubes) Marilou Clary (CON)

Thank you for your support! Dr. Debra Schutte Associate Professor

New Advisory Board Member Dr. Barbara Given has recently been selected to join the International Advisory Board of the European Journal of Oncology Nursing (EJON). The European Journal of Oncology Nursing is a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience through which nurses can address issues of importance in oncology related to practice, policy, research and education.

Reviewer News During the month of February Mei-Wei Chang served as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior and Obesity Research.

RESEARCH CENTER NEWS CONT.
