Aim

introducing Research Analytics Toolbox a bit more in detail

showing how it can support

researchers of the faculties,

research groups (research trends, research positioning (using in-depth analysis)),

and perhaps research evaluation at some point.

and where our limitations are at this stage (skills and capacity)

to hear from the deans and faculty representatives whether and where they see a potential in this research analytics toolbox for their research staff and faculty board

to hear potential questions that faculty (staff and board) may have

What is Research Analytics Toolbox

Key example questions that it can answer can be found in the booklet (please follow this link): https://d1rkab7tlqy5f1.cloudfront.net/Library/Themaportalen/Research%20Analytics/AIDA-Booklet.pdf positioning of my research in global context; What is the state of the art

in my field? What is the position of my group in relation to the competitors?

what are important patterns or trends (developments) within specific research domain; How can I visualize development of topics over time?

how much do my well-cited and less-cited papers get mentioned in social media

what are my new, undiscovered possibilities to publish my research, preferably in open access; Where do I quickly and easily find opportunities for publishing Open Access in my research discipline?

how can I best handle my Conference Submissions? How can I show the funder my societal engagement? How to evaluate the ‘impact’ of research output that is published very

recently

Position of my research within the community?

How does it answer such questions, what is research analytics toolbox:

In Delft we (traditionally) are privileged to have access to a broad range of:

databases – for example Scopus, WoS, IEEE, and more, such as Pure, Altmetric data.

analysis tools (from simple ‘power Excel’ to complex bibliometric tools, ….)

general purpose software tools and programming languages – R, Matlab, Pyton, Java,

visualization tools - CitNetExplorer and recently adopted VOS viewer, Gephi)

plus knowledge of open source software tools that enhance analyses – eg oaDOI.

The tools have been used for specific purposes by specially trained users – those who know where to find them and what these can do – somewhat fragmented and somewhat hidden.

The ‘toolbox’ brings these tools together in an integrated manner: it showcases

their use, access to the tools, provides instructions how to use them, plus a bit

more – and that is the beauty of this toolbox – it includes and interface where

different layers of information are put together and can thus be examined.

A Toolbox User-Friendly Interfaces

The creators of the Toolbox are the members of the project AIDA: Bijan, Rudy Negenborn 3ME, CWTS. http://aida.tudelft.nl/

The home of research analytics is the page Research Analytics on the Library website (migrated from former AIDA project site): https://www.tudelft.nl/en/library/current-topics/research-analytics/

Why Research Analytics?

In-depth research analytics provide insight into the positioning of the research

fields and identify important patterns and trends within the research domains.

Research analytics introduces researchers and faculties with a toolbox – a

collection of various data sources and powerful, yet easy-to-use, analysis- and

visualization tools.

Page 6: Research analytics @ TU Delft Librarystaffmobility.eu/sites/default/files/staffweek/... · introducing Research Analytics Toolbox a bit more in detail showing how it can support researchers

Insight in collaboration opportunities with other universities and how the

research areas of universities, faculties and individual researchers relate to

research carried out in different parts of the world can be valuable for

numerous reasons: Individual researchers within the university need to digest

the state of the art in their field for new, convincing research proposals. The

university itself and its faculties need to be aware of trends within their

research areas for strategic decisions. Above all, researchers and universities

can benefit from effective and new inter-university collaborations.

Scientific publications offer the main resource for the identification of world-

wide research trends. In addition, non-scientific publications and mentions in

various social and societal channels are considered as indicators of research

relevance.

For whom?

Research analytics toolbox will help a wide range of end-users – such as PhD

candidates, researchers, group leaders, and university policymakers – to

position their research, identify important trends within their area of interest,

or to develop innovative research lines.

Analysis Example: Faculty Aerospace Engineering || Link to web-based analysis of LR departments

Term-map of the faculty research output

Figure: The image shows the term map based on the research articles written by researchers of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Data source: Web of Science Core Collection enriched with faculty information from Pure Time frame: 2008-2016 Methodology / analysis: No normalization. Visualization: Terms and phrases were extracted from the title, abstract and keywords of the research articles. Six clusters shown in red, purple, green, yellow dark blue and light blue show the terms and phrases that frequently co-occur and could be looked at as topics. Note: the analysis is for exploration purposes; data have not been processed to such detail that significant conclusions can be drawn from it. Author and Date creation: Bijan Ranjbar-Sahraei, October 2017.

Time Trend - Overlay

Figure: The image shows the term map based on the research articles written by researchers of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Data source: Web of Science Core Collection enriched with faculty information from Pure Time frame: 2008-2016 Methodology / analysis: No normalization. Visualization: Terms and phrases were extracted from the title, abstract and keywords of the research articles. The overlay colour of each circle corresponds with the average publication year of all the papers that include the corresponding term/phrase. Note: the analysis is for exploration purposes; data have not been processed to such detail that significant conclusions can be drawn from it. Author and Date creation: Bijan Ranjbar-Sahraei, October 2017.

Citation Impact - Overlay

Figure: The image shows the term map based on the research articles written by researchers of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Data source: Web of Science Core Collection enriched with faculty information from Pure Time frame: 2008-2016 Methodology / analysis: No normalization. Visualization: Terms and phrases were extracted from the title, abstract and keywords of the research articles. The overlay colour of each circle corresponds to the average citation impact of all the papers that include the corresponding term/phrase. The terms/phrases with cold colours (left on colours bar) represent the research activities with lower (average) number of citations compared to the terms/phrases with hot colours (right on colours bar). Note: the analysis is for exploration purposes; data have not been processed to such detail that significant conclusions can be drawn from it. Author and Date creation: Bijan Ranjbar-Sahraei, October 2017.

Overlay – Departments: Aerospace Structure and Materials

Figure: The image shows the term map based on the research articles written by researchers of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Data source: Web of Science Core Collection enriched with faculty information from Pure Time frame: 2012-2016 Methodology / analysis: No normalization. Visualization: Terms and phrases were extracted from the title, abstract and keywords of the research articles. The overlay colour of each circle corresponds to the ratio of publications of the Department of Aerospace Structures and Material the terms/phrases were extracted from. Thus the red colour means that the terms/phrases just came from publications by this department. Note: the analysis is for exploration purposes; data have not been processed to such detail that significant conclusions can be drawn from it. Author and Date creation: Bijan Ranjbar-Sahraei, October 2017.

Co-authorship example

Figure caption: The image shows the co-authors network based on the research articles written by researchers of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Data source: Web of Science Core Collection enriched with faculty information from Pure Time frame: 2006-2018(?) Methodology / analysis: No normalization. Visualization: The author names were extracted from the research articles of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Six clusters shown in red, purple, green, yellow, dark blue and light blue show the authors who co-occur often, meaning they often write publications together and could thus represent research groups or larger entities. Note: the analysis is for exploration purposes; data have not been processed to such detail that significant conclusions can be drawn from it. Author and Date creation: Bijan Ranjbar-Sahraei, October 2017.
