Purpose
This circumpolar research network is
looking at how Northern communities and
regions can have more benefits from
resource development with fewer costs.
ReSDA is a Major Collaborative Research
Initiative Project funded by the Social
Sciences and Humanities Research Council
of Canada.
ReSDA
ReSDA is a research network
involving researchers from a range of
disciplines and organizations
representing communities,
government, the private sector, and
non-profit organizations.
Details of research funding and
projects can be found on the ReSDA
website or by contacting the program
coordinator or one of the theme
leads.
“ The potential exists for finding new ways of
developing resources that will ensure greater
benefits for and build capacity in these northern
communities. Rather than being something that
threatens their vitality, the development of
natural resources can be done in a way that will
ensure the long-term sustainability of northern
communities and the surrounding environment.”

Partners
ReSDA is built on northern partnerships and collaborations. There will be five coordination centres to facilitate ReSDA
operations located at:
Yukon Research Centre
Nunavut Research Institute
The Labrador Institute
Aurora Research Institute
Makivik Corporation
Other key partners include:
Inuvialuit Regional Corporation
Arctic Cooperatives
Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
Yukon Government
Government of Nunavut
Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency
Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development Canada
ArcticNet
University of the Arctic
Dept. of Labrador & Aboriginal Affairs
Government of Northwest Territories
ReSDA will continue to evolve and grow as research projects are undertaken over the 7 years of operations. An initial gap analysis revealed key concerns and interests of northern
partners and researchers.
Research projects are organized into four main theme with projects that are done in partnership with local communities across the Circumpolar North. This work involves measuring, analysing and managing the impacts and benefits of resource development, with examples from a range of resource
sectors.
Theme 1—Sustainable Regions Frances Abele, Carleton University Theme 2—Sustainable Communities Chris Southcott, Lakehead University
