ResCon14

Welcome note from the School of Engineering and Design

It is my pleasure to welcome you to ResCon14, the Seventh School of Engineering and Design Research Student Conference. This annual event, which is now a regular feature of the School calendar, aims at giving our research students an opportunity to practice their oral and written presentation skills by presenting their research findings to their colleagues, academic members of staff and industrial collaborators. The event keeps growing year on year and ResCon14 is the biggest yet, with around 120 oral and 100 poster presentations. Because of its growing size, the event has now been extended to four days, to give all participating research students an opportunity to present their findings. As usual, the School will be offering a number of prizes to the top abstracts, oral and poster presentations. The abstracts contained in this book focus on a particular aspect of the students’ research, selected to appeal to a diverse audience rather than attempting to describe their entire doctoral project. They have all been peer-reviewed by fellow research students. We would encourage all participants to ask questions and provide comments on the oral and poster presentations, to maximise the feedback given to the students. The ResCon14 Committee, composed of academics, research students and the School Research Office staff, has invested considerable time and effort to ensure the success of the event. They deserve our appreciation in organising every aspect of the conference. The School is particularly grateful to Carole Carr, Janet Wheeler and Rebecca Byrne, from the SED Research Office, who managed all aspects of the organisation and whose administrative support was crucial in making this event successful. I trust you will enjoy the conference and will find these four days interesting and informative.
