REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BA ECONOMICS MAJORUNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER

I. CREDIT HOURS IN ECONOMICS Economics majors must complete at least 32 credit hours of economics courses. The math requirements do not count toward either the minimum total economics credit requirement or in the major GPA calculation. At least 24 credit hours must be upper division courses. Students transferring two 3-credit Principles courses must complete at least 27 credit hours of upper division economics. Hours for economics elective courses in excess of the minimum major credit requirement may be taken on a pass/fail basis in accordance with College of Arts & Sciences policy. No more than 45 semester hours of economics courses may be counted toward the 120 hours required for the BA.

All Economics courses must be completed with grades of C- or better. Overall and major GPA must be 2.0 or better.

All majors, including transfer students must complete at least 12 hours of upper division economics courses at the University of Colorado Boulder. With presentation of a course syllabus, the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies will consider topically relevant courses on a case-by-case basis for fulfillment of the required ancillary course work in substitution for those listed below. Please contact your Economics advisor for further assistance. Elective economics courses at the 3000-level, such as ECON 3403, 3535, 3545, and 3616, do not count toward either the required hours for the Econ major or the major GPA calculation.

III. RECOMMENDATIONS Honors: Qualified economics majors (those with a GPA above 3.4) may enroll in the department’s honors program in the fall of the

Honors Seminar II, ECON 4339, counts as an upper division general elective. Three credit hours of the Internship course (ECON 4939) count toward economics requirements.

Research Opportunities: Students may apply for the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). If interested, please visit http://enrichment.colorado.edu/urop/ or call (303) 735-6802 for information.

Graduate School: Those who wish to pursue an advanced degree in economics should take additional courses in mathematics and quantitative economics, including three semesters of calculus (MATH 1300/2300/2400), linear algebra, mathematical analysis. Quantitative economics courses can be found on the economics elective course list.
