Use could and would to make formal requests (ask someone to do something). Could and would, soften request and make them more polite.

Example : A:Could you work on Exercise 4 ?B: SureCould/would + S + Verb + O + . . . ?

Use can and will for less formal requests.

Example :A: Can I borrow your book ? B: Yes, of course. Can/will + S +Verb + O+ . . .?

Use please to make a requests more polite. Note the the word order.

orExample : Would you open your bags, please ?Would you show me some shoes, please ?Could you please open the window ?Could/would + S +Verb + O + please ?Could/would +S + please + Verb +O + . . .?

When we say YES to a requests or agreeing, we usually use expressions such as sure, certainly, of course, and no problem.

Example : A: Would you help me read this ?B: Of course, I will help you.

When we can NOT say YES to a requests or Refusing, we usually apologize and give an explanation.

Example : A: Would you accept my homework late ?B: Im sorry, I cant. I dont accept late homework.

Use would you mind + gerund to make polite requests.

base form + -ingExample : Would you mind opening the door for me ?Would you mind showing me some shoes ?Would you mind + gerund + O + . . . ?

When we answer this type of requests with not at all, it means that we will do what the person requests.

Example : A: Would you mind looking over my assignment?B: Not at all.

I dont mind at all !OK. Ill do it !
