property, whether real or personal, stocks or rights, and make and accept all kinds of deals~

contracts, operations, businesses and transactions of lawful commerce.---- The corporation

could engage also in fulfilling all the activities, contracts, operations, businesses ot

properties and rights, and post bonds. The vacancies which may occur in the Board of

Directors shall be filled by a vote of the majority of the remaining Directors. The meeting of

the Board of Directors can be held in the Republic of Panama or abroad, and any Director

Training for Trainers – Trainer’s Report

Content and agenda:

First day

- Introduction and warming up- How adults learn, what the differences of children and adults learning are. - learning as a cause of change, change as a cause of learning- precondition for adults to learn, different styles of learning, experiential learning -

Colbs’ cycle scheme- knowledge, skills and values- Communication as necessary knowledge and skill for transferring knowledge- How information is packed and coded, how other side is unpacking and

decoding, what are the differences between informing (as one way process) and communication (as two way process with feedback)

- Important elements of verbal and non verbal communication were the issues for inputs, discussion and exercises.

They were more interesting on how to present their work, as it is everyday topic for them, so we stayed for the day in that line.

Changing the direction of the training for the day, I have decided that we will work on how to present what they are doing for the different target groups. )

Third day

- Exercise - Participants started the day at 07.00, using the opportunity to introduce the morning shift in the hotel with their work. They used breakfast to approach different people and to explain what is talentocubano,com and why it is important.

Consultant’s Impressions:

Group was acting as thirsty of knowledge and information. The attitude was – give us as much as possible and we will latter on filter and take what is neccessary for us. This attitude was caused with mixed contents and styles during during educative program, combining education in very spcific content (like video production and web production) and development of personal skills and social knowledge. Participants are not ready to be trainers in their communities. They are still requestioning what are they doing, searching for clear understanding of vision, mision, overall goals of their work. They are clear with concrete tasks, perceiving their web site as purpose for itself, but with no clear understanding of why it should be done from social development aspect (except Adrian).

Afternoon:

Review of Youth TV with the purpose of adjusting the project to our objectives as an institution even more. In order to do this, we reviewed the development of the last episode and defined the next steps we need to take in the future with the new phases of Youth TV.

So far, we have worked in this project with the leadership of ‘Los Aldeanos”, especially Aldo, who has developed a product directed to music, specifically to Hip Hop music and leaving aside other areas of interest to Cuban youth. Also, a lack of interest from “Aldeanos” to move forward with this project has been perceived. It could be due to many reasons, such as their busy schedule and some foreign aid received for their music projects.

Several needs emerge then, not only necessary for success, but also for the survival of the project, because we (CREA) are a tool necessary for the progress of the projects and their lasting independence.

Therefore, a search for a Project Manager is initiated. This person must possess the following characteristics:

-Knowledge of the media

- With an entrepreneuring attitude and reasons to continue with the project, independently or with our help.

- The ability to work in a team and in different areas (This is essential, because it is intended for the show to have several sections)

- Someone with ideas for identifying potential collaborators

- A low profile before state authorities, but active in the project.

-Someone with the desire and availability to conduct these tasks.

-Availability to be trained in marketing, an essential complement of the project.

A last episode with the current beneficiaries must be elaborated also. These are the beneficiaries that produced the TV shows under the name Under TV and the nickname Instituto Raspadura.

The reasons are explained as follows:

- To finish determining team work objectives: Independence, leadership, etc

- The considerable investment in training and equipment that they have already received.

- It has already been mentioned to Raspadura the intention of elaborating a second episode. (To close the cycle)

- To be able to identify who can be a member of the new Youth TV episode and also determine what equipment already delivered could be used by the new group.

- We want them to be one of the sections of the new Youth TV

Concerning this issue, the following decisions depicted in the graph were made:

The Under TV project will end in April, and on the same date we expect the Youth TV product to be ready, in order to start with distribution and conduct and evaluation of the product received and plan the next episodes. In case that on this date, Youth TV is not ready yet, a grace period will be granted. We understand what means starting a process from the very beginning.

Duration of the training: From February 25 to March 25

Place of the training: Amsterdam and Madrid

Group:

M group is formed by Amish around his idea for M project – making an online data base of independent Cuban artists that would enable them to sell their own work and in that way to survive without compromising their work (to avoid regime as intermediary intervening in content of their work).

Group wrote, planned and executed big and complex project that included work all over the island, communication with dozens, even hundred contacts, day to day financial management and careful team work. For all of it they stay within time and budget lines.

During the project group built strong team spirit and synergy. They developed compassion and strong feeling of brotherhood. They finished work on the project full of energy and enthusiasm. After all teams returned to the capitol, everybody had a same question: “What is the next big thing we’re going to do?” They were doing what they like to and it was bringing results: they believe they can make change.

They also built a network of devoted local collaborators all over the island, ready and willing to continue with cooperation.

Why now?

Now it is the perfect time to “ride on” their enthusiasm and to make them fully self-sustainable by training them in group dynamics and management, project management and thinking, motivation and communication, networking, social awareness campaigning, leadership, NVA.

To help them define their vision, mission, aims and to plan new projects.

Why Amsterdam/Madrid?

At the moment it is not possible to provide intensive high quality trainings of on these topics on the Island. After discussing the issue with the group we decided that perfect solution will be external training disguised as a cultural visit/VJ workshop. It would provide excellent cover for trip abroad (promotion of modern Cuban art) and it would provide necessary logistics and time for trainings their need.

Group is invited by Dutch NGO to participate in one month VJ workshop in Amsterdam, but they would spend two weeks in Amsterdam and two weeks in Madrid.

Amsterdam is chosen because grantee (S) has good relations with Dutch organization My Little Underground which was ready to fill invitation letters for group to be submitted for exit

permissions EU visa. MLU is also excellent cover for the training – they are very well connected Dutch organization involved in modern art, promoting local art scenes from all over the world and into new media.

Madrid was chosen because of its Spanish speaking environment and because of huge exile colony that may be great base for recruiting new contacts for external support for the group.

Curriculum

Draft of the curriculum is based on discussions group had with grantee and with CR. At the moment grantee is shaping in final form in consultation with CR.

Training will be consisted of following topics: group dynamics, NGO management, labor division, project management and thinking, leadership, motivation and communication, networking, social awareness campaigning, leadership, NVA, VJing, web design and web marketing, video production, polls planning and executing. All the trainings will be designed to be interactive and every working week will consisted of 4 days in classroom and one day of practical work. Last week trainees will be educated how to transfer knowledge they got to the others.

Aims

External training for core members of M group should:

- To develop their capacities to work as the organize self-sustainable group

- To strengthen their capacities to work as an independent social actor of emerging civic society on the island

- To develop their professional skills in the field of their work (VJing, video production, art documenting, web design and web marketing)

- To improve group’s capacities for national and international networking

- To educate them to be capable to transfer knowledge further, to become trainers

Note: Amsterdam part of the training will be also used to finalize the M project: to upload on web and to promote data-base of Island’s independent artists.

Overview of meeting with Angel Saltos

CREA presented an overview presentation of the CCCSP program (basic overview– context on the island, brief sociopolitical analysis, goals & objectives of the program, etc.). We then discussed the unique opportunity for independent musicians (Los Aldeanos) to gain legitimacy and protection from the State via interaction with international VIP musicians (specifically Juanes) during the upcoming Concierto por la Paz and how this contributes to CREA’s overall goal to promote civil society development on the island.

Before defining a strategy, we presented a “who’s who” of the actors involved, both inside and outside Cuba. Angel then did a “who’s who” of the actors involved on the entertainment side. We carried out a power mapping activity to plot each of these actors in terms of their influence and interest in our goal.

In the meantime, the news (and tension) about the concert is changing daily. Juanes gave an interview on Univision to clarify his position on giving the concert and his goal (simply to play music and support “reconciliacion y paz social”). Juanes also expressed distress (“this has been a nightmare, a drama, has affected my family”) at being ostracized by the exile community as a traitor, naïve, etc. and is being accused of legitimizing the dictatorship. This is important because this gives us a clear value added to counter- balance this argument (more below). During the broadcast, the NGO Raices de Esperanza (based in Miami) was also interviewed and was the only group defending Juanes decision to play on the island. Juanes has been consulting them directly about the concert and its political implications. This implies a solid trust between Juanes and the NGO.

The strategy is defined as follows:

Goal – To provide protection and legitimization to independent musicians on the island.

Objective: Create the opportunity for a public interaction between Juanes (or another VIP artist participating in the concert) and Los Aldeanos (and/or Silvito) – this interaction will be planned, but informal (i.e. a visit to their studio, a conversation backstage, an opportunity for them to talk – must be natural for Juanes to engage).

Activities:Phase I (Aug 18-20)

1. Determine the “entry point” to Juanes (via Raices – X has a contact at Raices; via Angel’s contacts)

a. Angel and X travel to Miami to meet with Raices (Xavier stays in Miami up to 24 hours only)

b. Explore contacts with other VIP artists who may be at the concert (Sanz?)

2. Communicate the message to Juanes – we’ve seen your message, we’d like to share an idea that will help you “balance” your visit and counter the attacks from the exile – i.e. by visiting non-state actors on the island, you will show that you are not a pawn, you’re not favoring the system - you can “practice what you preach” and do what you aim to do – show equality.

3. Juanes is on board and gives his green light to the idea

Regulraly, some of the artists are throwing angry rhymes heavily criticizing regime, but final drop was probably what  happened few weeks before – somebody from the audience shouted “Down with Fidel!” and several other voices joined what was cheered by the rest of the audience. Aldo, who had the mic at that moment calm down situation by saying something like “OK people, let’s respect everyone’s opinion but we’re here tonight because of music”.  Just day after Hip­Hop events in Barbaran were shot down director of Cine Riviera call Aminta asking for the full list  of the participants for Puna Ariba. He also asked to see the lyrics of all the songs and all the footage that will be shown on the ceremony. In the morning he said lyrics and footage are fine but he asked for the full names of 25 out of  around 80 artists (full list was with artistic names). First on his list of 25 was Aldo. After he got their full names he asked for Aldo to be removed from the list saying that Aldo has bad reputation and that he doesn’t want to have any problem. Aminta explained him that although is not main star at the ceremony at all, but he simply needs to be there because he’s a guest singer in some of the awarded songs. She convinced director that it would more scandalous to avoid Aldo then to have him on the ceremony. Negotiations were running trough whole day and ceremony started under the tensions. Cine Riviera was full­packed with around 1400 people and between 100 and 200 hundred people was left outside trying for more than two hours to come in. Director was also there, very, very nervous.  After first half an hour, one of the awarded guys (member of discussion group De Mongoles) said in his speech “and before I die I would like to see my island free” what was loudly cheered by the audience. Directors become hysterical and runaway to his office to do few phone calls. He came back in 10 minutes claiming that Morlote (President of AHS) and minister of culture are coming soon. In the meantime few artists repeated something similar as De Mongoles guy.  Director was demanding from K to stop the event. Morlote came and ask for the urgent meeting with director and producers. Meeting was held immediately in director’s office. Present were Morlote, director, Carlito and Michy. Morlote said he was called by minister himself. He said situation in society is very fragile and after Tanya Brugiera performance authorities are expecting huge campaign of dissidents to happen during Biennale. That’s why all the mass events are very carefully observed. He said he understands that K’s are having good intentions, but if they are not acting smart they may all have problems. He asked who of the artist is not a member of AHS and said that clear division must be made between those who are and those who are not members. Him and director was further pressing  Michy to stop the event. Carlito joined them saying that he don’t want to lose his job. They went behind the curtain negotiating trying to convince Maikel Extremo (he was master of ceremony) to stop the show. Carlito and Didier join them. In the meantime few civil policeman appeared taking positions close to the doors, close to the stage and close to the sound mixer. It was very tensed and finally they convinced Arturo and Michy to order Maikel to stop the event. Four awards were not given and four songs were not performed. Audience noticed that something is wrong, mostly because everybody was expecting “Rap Es Guerra” to be performed, but they were not sure what happened. K was told they will be called for serious talks about their future (It still didn’t happen).

As in my last report I would like to underline Serbian mobile network numbers as a efficient and safe way to communicate both on the island and between island and the rest of the world. I would like CREA to consider option to  have one of these numbers. I am intending to bring one to Aldo.

anyone has clear picture of what would future be like or even what kind of future they would like to have, but they all seem more then before that future is something else, something better.

Hip­Hop scene is emerging as a highly potential field for grant­making. Situation in which government avoids to confront artists, harassing producers instead still leaves some space for dissent. But, this dissent is readable and available almost exclusively for people from the art scene.  Hip­Hop scene is only mass culture (and it’s growing) with clear message of dissent and more important with developed underground infrastructure. My opinion is that regime strategy is to keep dissent among artist as an elitist thing – keeping public quiet and growing illusion of freedom of expression at the same time. At the same time, regime is forcing “safe” forms of popular culture like salsa and regaetton. Hip­hop appeared as the most “conscious” form of pop­culture and probably the most vital. We shouldn’t underestimate government’s potential to recognize danger – they did form their own Rap Agency, but they it’s simply impossible to hijack the youth movement trough such a burocratic forms. By the latest two incidents hip­hoppers become official outlaws in the eyes of many young Cubans and hip­hop scene become subversive enough to be extremely cool, but at the same time not too dangerous to play in it. Gathering to confront the censorship imposed on hip­hop has a great potential. Plus, hip­hop is highly internationalized thing that connects hip­hoppers all over the  world, especially Latin America. Hip­Hop scene may be way to penetrate for the first time many social environments in Latin America traditionally friendly toward Castros. So, investing in brotherhood of Latin rappers could be another great potential. 

• Recommendations for strategic grant­makingMy recommendation is to fund virtual club Barbaran.com in praise of forbidden club, Cuban hip­hop and freedom of expression. We (grantees) can post another new video of some Cuban or Latin hip­hoper every Wednesday and by building exclusive content we may really build something influential in Latin America and the world. It can be the main point of Latin hip­hop culture and it could certainly be a project that our friends will be ready put a lot of enthusiasm in. Being concentrated on my work with YTV team, I haven’t been targeting potential grantees, but ‘m sure we can easily  form the team for this idea out of IT and hip­hop underground. Melisa also expressed interest to be included in the project. We discussed it together with Aldo and Adrian.

• Going through customs in Cuba and the US    We passed the border smoothly. No questions were asked.

• Lodging, eating, moving around, communicating – relevant comments   Lodging: We spent our first night in Hotel Vedado and the rest of the time we were in casa particular in Calle 21, No 360 in Vedado.  Hotel is OK, on a good location and not expensive, so we can recommend it to further consultants. Casa is clean, on the good location and they serve good food. So we can recommend this casa too. Moving around: Our main mean of transport was taxi. The problem with it is that it`s getting more and more difficult to obtain receipts for it. Most of the cab drivers claim they don’t have it. Communication:To communicate with the world outside the island we used internet from hotels and our Serbian mobile phones. To communicate with people on the island, we used our Serbian mobile phones. We were texting Adrian (has Serbian number too) and then he would appoint the meeting. We would like to suggest purchasing one or few Serbian mobile numbers for Aldo and crew, so we can easily communicate with them from Serbia. It can be also good way for us to communicate with Crea while on island. Internet in hotels is often very slow.

We didn’t notice any particular security threats (comparing to our previous trips). Worth mentioning is what we heard from Adrian and Aldo: There’s a new buzz on the island that Cuba is exporting in huge figures not only medical staff but also intelligence officers to other Latin America countries. On their way back they act more arrogant in public. None of them experienced such behavior, but they heard about such stories.  

• Security incidents during the trip: description, actors involved, reasons.   There were no any security incidents during the trip. One evening Rajko was stopped by the policeman, but left alone immediately after declared himself as a tourist. 

• Security during interaction with locals – relevant comments   We had no any security incidents while interacting with locals. We didn’t notice any irregular curiosity about our presence there.

becuase of Barbaran and Puna Ariba events rap musica become hot issue for much wider audience. We had long discussion and finaly I agreed with them underlying that in that case language of the show must be carefuly constructed to be understandable to everyone. We strongly agreed that we don't want to produce something that might be very good but undersandable only to hip­hop audience. Langauge in that context means language itself, script, directing, editing and graphics. Barbaran is the pub nearby Aldo's house (across the Zoo). More then a year a go Aldo made a deal with a manager of it to host hip­hop events there. Place become very popular atracting creme of Cuban hip­hop scene. Hip­­hop events were held once a week (first every monday and then every wednesday). Performing artists were mostly form Comission Depuradora ­ collective of hip­hop artists, mostly those who do not possibility or will to perform or publish trough official channels. Events were always fully packed with audience ­ I think like 200 people. Sometimes some of the rapers from the other cities were performing and plenty of events were produced to be thematic ­ like female hip­hop for example. Memebership in Comission Depuradora is not formal and number of the members is constantly changing ­ some of them imigrated and one guy went to work trough Rap Agency, mocking Comision Depuradora on his gigs. My estimation that Comission Depuradora is consisted of around few dozen artists. Almast all best undergound hip­hopers are in it ­ Aldeanos, Maikel Extremo, Soandry, Sylvito... They made a proper brand of it ­ CDs, T­Shirts... anhd they mad Barbaran their "official" residence. De Mongoles are informal eduacation/discassion group consisting of around dosen people age from twenties to forties. Actually, they calling it "informal eduacation", but from what I heared it is mostly discussion group. They used to meet once a week in on of the parks in Vedado and to discuss varios social and spiritual topics. I never had oportunity to join them, but they were open to the audince out of their group. I noticed they are known and respected on the oundergound scene. They among the groups consistin Voltus 5 attempt to build network. As far as I know, at the moment they are not so active. Cultural center in O'Reily street is the project of certain spanish lady cooperating closely with Cuban institutions. I saw her at the openineg, but nobody was able to tell me what is her position exactlly. Athough obviosly event supported by authorities, event artracted plenty of people from the undergound scene. Because it is supposed to be place for youn artists, I think that many of them expect it to be more liberal place.  All the atmoshere created around Biennale, starting with Tanja Brugiera performance created atmosphere that changes are much closer then everyone was thinking. I never saw my friends so excited during any of previous trips. It reminds a lot on Guy Debores theories exposed in Society of Spectacles ­ how little scpectacles/scandals are subversily changing overall atmosphere within society. Since the beginning of my work there 'm operating mostly within people who are not happy with Cuban reality ­ but it was fisrst time that you could saw on all of their faces they think "changes" are reachable. For the  moment nobody was talking about how nothing can be done in Cuba because it's different, but about what to do now.
